We haven’t quite descended to that police-state level yet.

As has been pointed out again and again, the law in question DOES NOT require that any reason be given, because it’s an oversight power. By intention, the law was written to allow the designated committees to review anyone’s tax returns on request. It was written that way to be an effective deterrent, to disincline those holding high public office from misusing their official powers and privileged information for personal gain. That’s part of what oversight is all about.
