Climate scientists admit they were wrong on climate change effects

WUWT:

WE WERE WRONG, CLIMATE SCIENTISTS CONCEDE

  • Ben Webster, The Times

Catastrophic impacts of climate change can still be avoided, according to scientists who have admitted they were too pessimistic about the chances of limiting global warming.

The world has warmed more slowly than had been predicted by computer models, which were “on the hot side” and overstated the impact of emissions on average temperature, research has found.

New forecasts suggest that the world has a better chance than claimed of meeting the goal set by the Paris Agreement on climate change of limiting warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

The study, published in the prestigious journal Nature Geoscience, makes clear that rapid reductions in emissions will still be required but suggests that the world has more time to make the necessary changes.

Michael Grubb, professor of international energy and climate change at University College London and one of the study’s authors, admitted that his previous prediction had been wrong.

He stated during the climate summit in Paris in December 2015:

“All the evidence from the past 15 years leads me to conclude that actually delivering 1.5C is simply incompatible with democracy.”

Speaking to The Times, he said: “When the facts change, I change my mind, as Keynes said.

“It’s still likely to be very difficult to achieve these kind of changes quickly enough but we are in a better place than I thought.”

Professor Grubb said that the new assessment was good news for small island states in the Pacific, such as the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu, which could be inundated by rising seas if the average temperature rose by more than 1.5C.

“Pacific islands are less doomed than we thought,” he said.

Professor Grubb added that other factors also pointed to more optimism on climate change, including China reducing its growth in emissions much faster than predicted and the cost of offshore wind farms falling steeply in the UK.

He said:

“We’re in the midst of an energy revolution and it’s happening faster than we thought, which makes it much more credible for governments to tighten the offer they put on the table at Paris.”

The study found that a group of computer models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had predicted a more rapid temperature increase than had actually occurred.

The global average temperature has risen by about 0.9C since pre-industrial times but there was a slowdown in the rate of warming for 15 years before 2014.

Myles Allen, professor of geosystem science at the University of Oxford and another author of the paper, said:

“We haven’t seen that rapid acceleration in warming after 2000 that we see in the models. We haven’t seen that in the observations.”

He said that the group of about a dozen computer models, produced by government research institutes and universities around the world, had been assembled a decade ago “so it’s not that surprising that it’s starting to divert a little bit from observations”.

This whole Global Warming/Climate Change is a big big lie a UN Trojan Horse to bring about World Goverment under the Useless Nations that means we can take that yapping little french poodle and feed him to a rotwiler

In other words, our dire predictions are, again, proving to be false, so please allow us to stretch the fear out a bit.

They will go with the big bucks of grant money. Its money drying up this could break the back of the progressive religion, They may return to over-population.
Basically they stated we havent a friggen clue how to screw you out of more money but give us a chance.

Oops.

Nov. 3, 2017: Trump administration releases report finding ‘no convincing alternative explanation’ for climate change

The Trump administration released a dire scientific report Friday calling human activity the dominant driver of global warming, a conclusion at odds with White House decisions to withdraw from a key international climate accord, champion fossil fuels and reverse Obama-era climate policies.

To the surprise of some scientists, the White House did not seek to prevent the release of the government’s National Climate Assessment, which is mandated by law. The report affirms that climate change is driven almost entirely by human action, warns of potential sea-level rise as high as eight feet by the year 2100, and details climate-related damage across the United States that is already unfolding as a result of 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit of global warming since 1900.

@Greg: Unlike the previous administration and the left, Trump doesn’t suppress stories. It is better to discuss them in the light of day.

Nothing refutes the failed predictions, suppressed facts and manipulated data that leads to such reports. Perpetual liars cannot be taken seriously.

July 24, 2018 — Temps near 120 degrees in Southwest as Texas reports record highs

It’s not just Texas.

July 24, 2018 —Record-breaking summer marches on to the beat of climate change

Nothing refutes the failed predictions, suppressed facts and manipulated data that leads to such reports.

Nothing refutes the right’s bullshit quite like the observation of reality.

Wow!!!

Greggie is pointing the finger at climate change (formerly known as global warming) because it is hot in Texas in July.

Who would have anticipated that?

@Greg: No one not 1 person is denying climate change. Its the causes we are refuting and the scientists models and predictions are not scientifically proven. They wont even consider geo-engineering, the sun, volcanoes, burning of american flags and since dropping out of the Paris accord millions havent died yet. Didnt you scold us for reporting record cold temps as weather not climate, what game are you playing now? https://earthquakes.volcanodiscovery.com/
If Yellowstone blows is a new Ice Age, solar activity signals cooler temps for years. CLIMATE CHANGES but lets not crap up the planet anyway.

Such liberal litter pigs!

@kitt, #8:

There’s actually very little doubt in the legitimate scientific community about the relationship between increasing atmospheric CO2 levels and global warming. The doubt that exists outside the scientific community isn’t a result of the application of scientific methodology; it’s the result of a well funded public relations campaign.

This is part of an exchange between Senator Jeff Merkley and William Wehrum, Trump’s new choice to head the EPA. If it seems like he knows nothing about the central issues the EPA deals with, it’s because he doesn’t. He’s an attorney, not a scientist. He’s no more qualified to run the EPA than a shoe salesman. He can’t seem to understand NASA graphs that are simple enough for a bright 6th grade science student to grasp. Like Pruitt, he was chosen to monkey wrench a regulatory agency, not to fulfill its designated mission.

The Trump administration is turning into a disaster across more fronts than most of us can even begin to keep up with. We’re looking at the possibility of simultaneous geopolitical, economic, environmental, and social train wrecks. The man doesn’t have a clue what he’s doing.

@Greg: That’s weather. No, wait… that’s climate change… or is it weather? Or climate change?

The remainder or July is expected to be cooler than normal, so….

Climate has been changing since there was cli.ate, regardless of how much taxes are imposed.

@Greg: In a recent speech at the University of Chicago, James Anderson — a professor of atmospheric chemistry at Harvard University — warned that climate change is drastically pushing Earth back to the Eocene Epoch from 33 million BCE, when there was no ice on either pole.
Holey crap batman they taxed the dinosaurs into mass extinction!

@Greg:

There’s actually very little doubt in the legitimate scientific community about the relationship between increasing atmospheric CO2 levels and global warming.

And who would be these “legitimate” scientists? Anyone who doesn’t agree with the disgraced Michael Mann is a heretic to those of you true believers.

This is part of an exchange between Senator Jeff Merkley and William Wehrum, Trump’s new choice to head the EPA. If it seems like he knows nothing about the central issues the EPA deals with, it’s because he doesn’t. He’s an attorney, not a scientist.

You mean like Al Gore, who majored in (tah-dah) government and flunked out in his science classes but has now amassed over $300 million in wealth selling bogus “climate change” theories? Do you think the head of GM knows how to build a car or the CEO of ATT can fix the telephone in your house?

The Trump administration is turning into a disaster across more fronts than most of us can even begin to keep up with.

I guess you mean unlike Obama who was a success in all he did; Iran, Russia, the GDP, national debt, unemployment (remember all those shovel ready jobs, Greggie?), Bengazi, oh, my, the list is so long of all the wonderful things Obama achieved.

Now, why don’t you explain to all of us, since you are such a top notch scientist yourself, why the earth was hotter in ages past and before the invention of the combustion engine, than it is now? And remind us again when Al Gore said New York was going to be under water?

@retire05: Bastids are cray-cray In 1991 an enviromental advisor to the UN
“But in designating these dangers as the enemy we fall into the trap which we have already warned readers about, namely mistaking symptoms for causes. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself.”
So should we fire up the ol nazi ovens, whos first, something tells me Al Gore wont be first in line to save the planet. This ideology began with the Nazis but you are adept enough in history to already know that.

@kitt:

It makes me sick that so many stupid people (like Greggie) buys into the Chicken Little mantra (the sky is falling) spewed by those like Al Gore, that fat hog, Michael Moore-on, Michael Mann, etc. that we can outsmart nature itself. Bring up the fact that the Earth, as a whole, has been much hotter in ages past, and they will have some glib response that, like all of Greggie’s answers, obfuscate, not really answer.

Is the Earth getting hotter? Somewhat. Will there be another cooling cycle in a 1,000 years? Probably. But the “experts” can’t predict it will rain tomorrow with 100% certainty, so why would I buy into all the scare tactics designed for only one reason, to amass great amounts of wealth for people like Al Gore and Michael Moore-on.

@Greg: It was in the low 50s here last night. I guess on the average, the world temperatures are normal.

@retire05: ” ‘Wolves deceive their prey, don’t they?’ one said to me recently. Therefore, biologically, he said, we are justified in exaggerating to get society to change.”

Professor David Shearman, an Assessor for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Let me open my purse and personally fund these guys with donations..Greggie you with me?

@kitt: Notice the high temperatures are either taken in the middle of the city or at airports. Just wondering if black asphalt has anything to do with high temperatures?

@Randy: https://www.gao.gov/new.items/d11800.pdf
42% bad data is better than none? But pouring tax payer dollars to “scientists” in grants is much more important than relocating or maintaining the temperature sensors that collect the data for climate models that dont agree with any other models. That whole reproducible testing procedure is so over rated.

@Randy: @kitt: They should put Mueller on the case. He’ll find that global warming!

@Deplorable Bill, #10:

Climate has been changing since there was climate, regardless of how much taxes are imposed.

It’s the overall trend that matters on a graph, not the recurring ups and downs from one year to the next. Do you understand what this simple National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration graph is showing us?

Taxing CO2 omissions is nothing more than an effort to alter a behavior that’s thought to be producing increasingly negative consequences. Some people don’t give a damn about the long term consequences and resent any interference.

@Randy, #17:

Notice the high temperatures are either taken in the middle of the city or at airports. Just wondering if black asphalt has anything to do with high temperatures?

Such local environmental factors are taken into account and allowed for to minimize any errors they might introduce when the data is compiled. The deniers don’t tell you that, do they?

@Greg: So we all rely on computer generated data instead of direct readings in approved locations. Computers need reliable data to make adjustments not SWAGs.

@Greg: Taxing carbon would be valuable if anyone can prove that carbon dioxide causes climate change. No one has done that. So, taxing carbon is just another way to take money out of tax payer’s pockets!

@Greg: I told you no one is denying climate change. When will you understand english or actual scientific methods that can be proven by being replicated? You are the science deniers. Its social engineering and populous control, nothing more.

November 23, 2018 — Federal climate change report paints grim picture for Midwest

Rising temperatures in the Midwest are projected to be the largest contributing factor to declines in U.S. agricultural productivity, with extreme heat wilting crops and posing a threat to livestock, according to a sweeping federal report on climate change released Friday.

Midwest farmers will be increasingly challenged by warmer, wetter and more humid conditions from climate change, which also will lead to greater incidence of crop disease and more pests and will diminish the quality of stored grain. During the growing season, temperatures are projected to climb more in the Midwest than in any other region of the U.S., the report says.

Without technological advances in agriculture, the onslaught of high-rainfall events and higher temperatures could reduce the Midwest agricultural economy to levels last seen during the economic downturn for farmers in the 1980s.

Overall, yields from major U.S crops are expected to fall, the reports says. To adapt to the rising temperatures, substantial investments will be required, which will in turn will hurt farmers’ bottom lines.

These are some of the findings of the report released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The 1,600-page report — vetted by 13 government agencies and written collectively with the help of 300 scientists — is perhaps the most authoritative and comprehensive statement on the risks of climate change, which has contributed to extreme weather that has cost the U.S. nearly $400 billion since 2015, the authors found…

@Greg: “projections” They are always wrong.

Always. Scare tactics. Fear mongering. Control freaks.

June 14, 2019 — White House physicist sought aid of rightwing thinktank to challenge climate science

A member of the Trump administration’s National Security Council has sought help from advisers of a conservative thinktank to challenge the reality of a human-induced climate crisis, a trove of his emails show.

William Happer, a physicist appointed by the White House to counter the federal government’s own climate science, reached out to the Heartland Institute, one of the most prominent groups to dispute that burning fossil fuels is causing dangerous global heating, in March.

In the messages, part of a group of emails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, Happer and the Heartland adviser Hal Doiron discuss Happer’s scientific arguments in a paper attempting to knock down the concept of climate emergency, as well as ideas to make the work “more useful to a wider readership”. Happer writes he had already discussed the work with another Heartland adviser, Thomas Wysmuller.

The emails from 2018 and 2019, received by the Environmental Defense Fund and provided to the Associated Press, also show Happer’s dismay that Jim Bridenstine, the Nasa administrator, had come round to accepting the science of climate breakdown.

In May 2018, an exchange between Happer and Heartland’s Wysmuller called Bridenstine’s change of heart “a puzzle” and copied in the Nasa administrator to urge him to “systematically sidestep” established science on temperature increases and sea level rise that the duo call “nonsense”.

This was followed by a February 2019 email in which Happer relays a complaint to James Morhard, Nasa’s deputy administrator, about climate crisis information on the space agency’s website. “I’m concerned that many children are being indoctrinated by this bad science,” said the email that Happer forwarded.

Happer has argued that carbon dioxide emissions actually benefit the planet rather than drive harmful climate disruption, once claiming that carbon dioxide has been demonized much like “the poor Jews under Hitler”.

Seriously? Yeah, he actually said that. The man is a 24 karat gold-plated loon. Which, of course, is no barrier to finding a place in this administration.

The physicist was previously a leader and co-founder of an advocacy group called the CO2 Coalition that received money from far-right organizations and fossil fuel interests such as the Mercer Family Foundation and the Charles Koch Institute.

Earlier this year the Trump administration launched an NSC initiative in which a panel would challenge the well-established findings of the government’s own agencies, including Nasa, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as international climate scientists, that human activity is causing the planet to dangerously heat up.

The Trump administration has recently ramped up its efforts to muzzle its own scientists from acknowledging the reality of the climate crisis. Last month, the White House barred a state department official from giving written testimony to Congress that the climate emergency was “possibly catastrophic”. The testimony of the official, Rod Schoonover, was critiqued by Happer but the state department refused his suggestions to remove references to harm caused by global heating.

“These people are endangering all of us by promoting anti-science in service of fossil fuel interests over the American interests,” Michael Mann, a Pennsylvania State University climate scientist, told the AP.

The following, by the way, is deceptive, to the point of being a lie.

We were wrong — worst effects of climate change can be avoided, say experts

@Greg: What challenges the climate scam is the fact that their predictions never seem to match reality.

I don’t think most people actually have a sound grasp of the what the predictions of climate scientists actually are, because it has been much easier for those denying the science to set up and then knock down straw men. We seem to have become a society so focused on the short term that we can hardly think 20 or 30 years ahead. All manner of negative environmental changes related to human activity are taking place already, right in front of our noses.

@Greg: Maybe climate-Nazis shouldn’t be predicting the total disappearance of a glacier if they don’t have scientific evidence PROVING it will disappear. Likewise, maybe it’s not a good idea not to predict the thinning or disappearance of polar ice if they don’t really have the proof that it is happening. What is happening is that the “science” the “scientists” use to make their “scientific” predictions is being proven to be totally faulty. If they hadn’t developed models which skew and “correct” climate data to fit their politically necessary predetermined outcomes, they wouldn’t suffer such catastrophic embarrassments. But, then again, if they used legitimate data, they couldn’t show the impending disappearance of polar ice and glaciers.

The “straw men” are the never materializing dire consequences of not putting the world’s economy in the hands of socialist control freaks.

What is happening “right in front of our noses” is the climate fraud being exposed.

@Greg: They have been talking this shit since we were in school dude we waited the 20 years and glaciers havent covered Canada and the Northern states, I also am not planting orange trees.Frost warning still til the end of may here just like when I was a kid.
So the government is going to fix it on my dime given to a technocrat? The countries that are polluting the shit out of the planet they get to slide for 20 years…scam scam scam.

@Deplorable Me: The real reason that Global warming was changed to Climate change and not to climate emergency is that the real data never supported the hype. Global warming by definition is an average of global temperatures, but the averages never met statistical sample criteria. Then when they changed the name to climate change, they tried to make the effects local. Unfortunately for them, the cyclic weather patterns were consistent over centuries with no warming increase that was not explained by cycles. They blamed CO2 and methane. Unfortunately for the climate liars, they neglected to understand that the warming effects of CO2 are logarithmic. For ignorant people like Greg, that means that the higher the concentrations of CO2, the less effect CO2 has on warming. Then, cow farts were blamed for warming. Unfortunately, recent studies showed that methane from cows were just a small fraction of methane generation. Climate change/anthropocentric global warming effects are the biggest fraud of the last 30 years.

@Randy: I was a believer. Then there was East Anglia. So, I started paying attention and reading and discovered that it is a massive scam, just one of the various left wing attempts to take over the world’s economy for redistribution and the enrichment of those pushing the scam.

I see the proponents of the scam getting more and more desperate and shrill as the evidence mounts that it is all a massive con. The time is approaching that it will be impossible to make their climate change case because the rest of their predictions have crashed and burned.

If they had a real scientific case, they wouldn’t have to lie.

@Deplorable Me:

If they had a real scientific case, they wouldn’t have to lie.

They dont bother lying they just claim expertise and tell you that you couldnt possibly understand, how dare you ask for repeatable science.
Dont ask how the suns activity factors in, the wobble of the earth, the amount of volcanic activity.

Once again Greggie Goebbels tries to throw life into an old entry on FA. This one is nine months old. He gets his hat handed to him on the recent entries so he drags an old one out. He must book mark them.

Greggie Goebbles is nothing more than a troll. Please, quit feeding him.

@retire05: We just came to calm him after AOC frightened him https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/jun/8/climate-change-bring-25-holocausts-and-other-stupi/?utm_source=spotim&utm_medium=spotim_recirculation&spotim_referrer=recirculation
We just dont know if this is dry humor. Greg does have the intelligence of sea sponge.
😉

@retire05:

Once again Greggie Goebbels tries to throw life into an old entry on FA.

I’m sure you would greatly prefer that all discussion remain restricted to anti-Democratic Party propaganda, attack on Clinton and Obama, and Trump’s bullshit memes of the moment. Unfortunately that seems to eliminate any consideration of some of the most consequential news of the day. For example, it appears we might be in the middle of a rather clumsy and transparent setup calculated to justify the lunacy of another enormously expensive and potentially disastrous military intervention in the Middle East.

So, as we’re led along blindfolded toward another war having no clearly stated or rationally attainable objective, how long has it been since any new article appeared here regarding Iran? The most recent was over four months ago, and that was one touting the astonishing success of Trump having unilaterally kicked over the Iran Nuclear Agreement.

Hence, the periodic resurrection of months-old threads. There were earlier times when people were paying attention to reality. Now the focus is on distractions from it.

Greggie Goebbles is nothing more than a troll. Please, quit feeding him.

Maybe you should take your own advice.

@Greg: How about the Sweeds going to market based health care cause the socialist model failed. How about a story about the protests in France another model the Dems want to follow.
Communist light doesnt work when you get non contributing violent refugees crammed down your throat to support.

How about Kentucky preparing to stiff underpaid teachers, police, and other public employees after a lifetime of promises, because republican politicians robbed their pension funds to avoid collecting taxes, and then lost billions trying to make up their shortfalls by gambling on shady, under-regulated hedge funds? Has that once been mentioned?

@Greg: Geeze I wonder how many democrat run states I could point out failing pension funds….um……double digits https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2017-state-pension-funding-ratios/
Only one state – Wisconsin – has a fully funded pension. Lets see if Evers will keep it that way.

@Greg: Of course the current topic is the ongoing socialist scam of wanting to take over the world’s economy to cure a problem that doesn’t exist.

@Greg: Changing the subject again when you lose the argument!

@Randy, #43:

That was a response to post #39. I believe 39 still comes before 40.

@Greg: So the protests in France was about the environment and you started about underpaid teachers and police. That is not changing subject? I am glad you understand that 39 comes before 40. You do get something right once in a while.

@Greg:

Once again Greggie Goebbels tries to throw life into an old entry on FA.

I’m sure you would greatly prefer that all discussion remain restricted to anti-Democratic Party propaganda, attack on Clinton and Obama, and Trump’s bullshit memes of the moment.

I’d rather you go somewhere else to spew your b/s and your Trump hatred. Frankly, it has become rather boring.

it appears we might be in the middle of a rather clumsy and transparent setup calculated to justify the lunacy of another enormously expensive and potentially disastrous military intervention in the Middle East.

Which has exactly what to do with the subject of this thread? Nada, nil, nothing. Yet, here you are again wandering off in another direction.

how long has it been since any new article appeared here regarding Iran? The most recent was over four months ago,times when people were paying attention to reality. Now the focus is on distractions from it

And that is relevant to the subject of this thread how?

Greggie Goebbles is nothing more than a troll. Please, quit feeding him.

Maybe you should take your own advice.

In case you haven’t noticed, Greggie Goebbels, you comment on this site ten times more than I do. You are a boring idiot, spewing the same anti-Trump, pro Socialist b/s day after day. I continue with my recommendation that you seek psychiatric help and take up a hobby.

@retire05, #46:

And that is relevant to the subject of this thread how?

How are your entirely predictable personal attacks relevant to the topic of any thread where they appear?

Personal attacks are admittedly at least half of Donald Trump’s mindless blather. I suppose that’s a big part of the attraction for some people.

@Greg: Attacks are in response to ignorant posts of which you provide many!

June 20, 2019 — Chennai water crisis in India leaves millions reliant on filthy wells and expensive trucked-in supply

New Delhi — Millions of people in the South Indian city of Chennai, the country’s sixth largest metropolis, are facing an acute water shortage as the main reservoirs have dried up after a poor monsoon season. Some schools in the city have cut working hours and dozens of hotels and some restaurants have reportedly shut down due to the shortage.

The city of more than 4.5 million has been left to rely on wells and water brought in by truck. Thousands of wells dug across the city are leading to a rapid drop in the ground water level, and raising even further the concerns of environmentalists.

New wells are being dug as deep as 1,000 feet. Much of the water they produce isn’t even fit to drink.

“We have been facing this for the past two months,” Aditya Manoharan, a student in Chennai, told CBS News. “The bore well water is so dirty that it’s yellow in color. We can’t drink it.”

“The water table in Chennai is seriously compromised,” ecologist and biodiversity expert Dr. Jayashree Vencatesan told CBS News. “There is rampant extraction through bore wells in south Chennai. There are no guidelines; things are in a mess.”

Vencatesan has studied 200 years worth of data on Chennai’s monsoon seasons. She told CBS News the data analysis by herself and other researchers at the Care Earth Trust show a marked change around nine years ago; while the overall amount of rain has remained roughly the same, the number of days with rainfall have reduced drastically. In other words, more days with severe downpours and less steady, sustained rainfall. That leads to more quick runoff and less flowing in a controlled way into reservoirs.

“This may be a case of climate change,” she said.

Climate scientists have warned that the increase in average global temperatures appears to be causing earlier melting of Arctic ice, which can have a broad impact on the Earth’s climate over the course of a year — bringing exactly the kind of dramatic changes in weather patterns that the data from India reflect.

While this year’s monsoon will likely bring relief in the autumn, environmentalists believe there needs to be a long-term water conservation plan to avoid such crises in the future — not just in Chennai but across India.

“Water needs to be treated as a highly limited resource,” Vencatesan said. “There is a gap between government policy and the implementation.”

An alarming report last year by the Indian government’s own research institute, NITI Aayog, warned that 21 Indian cities, including New Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, would run out of groundwater by 2020.

The report also said 40% of India’s 1.34 billion people would have no access to drinking water by 2030. More than 600 million Indians are facing “acute water shortage” already, according to the report.

@Greg: You don’t think 1.34 billion people are having anything to do with running out of water?

Climate scientists have warned that the increase in average global temperatures appears to be causing earlier melting of Arctic ice

Arctic ice thicker and greater coverage than expected.
