Why is the default always “racism”?
On Thursday, two men entered the Starbucks and asked to use to the bathroom. An employee told them it was only for paying customers. When they then sat in the store without ordering anything, the manager called the police, and the men were arrested for trespassing. No charges were filed.
Johnson has called the incident “reprehensible” and apologized publicly for it. He said on Monday that he wanted to apologize to the men in person.
“I’d like to have a dialogue with them so that I can ensure that we have opportunity to really understand the situation and show some compassion and empathy for the experience they went through,” he said in an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” “Finally as we’re working to solve this, I’d like to invite them to join me in finding a constructive way to solve this issue.”
The company has also confirmed that the manager who called the police is no longer working at that store. Starbucks would not comment on other reports that she has left the company by mutual agreement. In his “Good Morning America” appearance, Johnson refused to say whether she had been disciplined, saying he didn’t want to “point blame.”
“My responsibility is to look not only at that individual but to look more broadly at the circumstances that set that up, to ensure that this never happens again,” he said in the interview.
Protesters gathered inside and outside the store throughout the day Monday. They chanted, “Starbucks coffee is anti-black.”
First off, Starbucks is a coward. It’s part of the problem. It’s a liberally-owned “woke” chain and the worst thing for a liberal is to be accused of racism. Remember when Starbucks baristas were encouraged to start a conversation with customers on race?
The woman who videotaped and posted one small snippet of the whole “incident” and then remarked,
“The police were called because these men hadn’t ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing. All the other white ppl are wondering why it’s never happened to us when we do the same thing.”
She later followed up in a tweet which said, “Ever since I posted this, I’ve had white strangers AND friends say ‘there must be something more to this story.’ That assumption is a big part of the problem. It does happen. All the time. Just not to you and me. Believe it and speak up.”
SHE is part of the problem. Fueling racism in this country.
Was the barista who asked the two men to purchase or leave the establishment consistent in enforcing store policy? We don’t know. Let’s just call her racist since it involves two black men.
Were the two men who refused to leave the establishment justified in not leaving? Were they at any point rude about it?
Were the police out of line? Have anything to apologize for? Doesn’t sound like it. Racist? Unlikely. Commissioner is black. Sergeant on site was black. If anyone was out of line it could have been the barista; but maybe not. The two men who it’s hard to describe as “customers” since they hadn’t purchased anything with the assumption that they were going to? Yes. They were out of line for not respecting the trespassing order.
White customers of Starbucks are leaving comments on forums talking about how they have been able to use restrooms at Starbucks or other establishments without being paying customers; or sit in at a Starbucks using free wi-fi services without paying.
It happens. Not all Starbucks are created equal. I think it depends on the local Starbucks and its employees. Some employees may turn the other cheek and avoid confronting people over walking in, using the restroom, and then walking out. Most patrons who head straight to the restroom usually then head to the back of the line to place an order.
Some Starbucks employees may allow people to come in and use their free wi-fi without making purchases; or to sit with their one purchase throughout the day. But is it because the person sitting there is white or not a PoC? I doubt it.
Situations like this do happen to white people. Only racism isn’t the default rationale.
Here’s how they’re receiving the story over at The Root:
This week, black America added “sitting at Starbucks waiting for a white friend” to the list of things that we cannot safely do without fear of police violence. Previous entries included sitting in your car, sitting in someone else’s car, standing on your front porch, standing on your back porch, surviving a car accident, asking for directions to school and, of course, breathing.
As a black man in America who has been harassed by police more times than I can count, I wasn’t surprised by the viral Starbucks video at all. However, my anger is directed not just at the cops but also at the cowardly Starbucks manager who made the call to the police to begin with. The men and women making these outrageous and unwarranted calls to police, which result in the harassment, unfair prosecution and even death of people of color, need to be found, publicly shamed and prosecuted to the full extent that the law allows.
There is racism in this country not only because some human beings in this world are racist; but also because some people see racism everywhere and in everything that happens. And you know what? It feeds and fuels into real racism.
But how is it that this story is an example of racism just because it happened to two men who happen to be black? Without knowing what’s in the heart and mind of the barista? Whether the local store’s policy is consistently enforced? Just because a SJW Twitter user claims it as such, drawing huge assumptions, herself? Again, people like her are part of the problem with keeping racism alive and well in this country.
When I was still in college, I had part-time work as security in a retail store. At first I was uniformed, as a visible deterrent to shoplifters. I took my job seriously, and was good at preventing and catching shoplifters and would-be shoplifters. Because I paid attention to customers. ALL customers. Every single customer who walked into the store, I made a friendly greeting to, and would spend a moment observing their behavior. After a while, I’d only occasionally “check up” on customers who I determined gave me no cause for further scrutiny, initially. It was simple: act normal, and chances are I’d think you were there to shop. Pay more attention to me or the sales staff, roll merchandise up, check through a stack of clothing and pull out the one that doesn’t have a sensor tag, look around a lot, act nervous…..all these behavioral signs is what made me pay more attention to certain people.
On a couple of instances, I had customers who came into a store and IMMEDIATELY, paid attention to me. And they were black. I am sure that they have probably been unfairly followed around in stores, before. But the problem is, their experience has “contaminated” their shopping behavior, to where they are looking to be followed around. So they are looking for it. And if you’re looking shifty-eyed, angry, or paying attention to sales help and to security….that’s not normal behavior.
The two customers assumed I was watching them because they were black. I watched them because it was my job, and they drew my attention, because of how they acted. One of them, when I figured out why he was watching me, I had a chance to explain it to him. Shoplifters spend a lot of time watching what security and sales staff are doing. Whether or not they are paying attention. Normal shoppers spend time looking at merchandise, and only look at sales helpers when they have a question and need help. That seemed to clear the air. He realized that he was suspicious of me right away, because I was security. And was staring at me right away. The other person, I did not get that chance of explanation. I am sure, after the fact, that he was a normal shopper as well. But he left in a huff, and unfortunately, he probably had his own preconceived notions reinforced by his misperceived experience with me; and he probably went on to tell others, “yes, America’s a racist country! Why, I’ve been followed around and watched unfairly in stores….” without ever considering maybe it’s his own behavior…maybe a chip he carries on his shoulder, that makes him find validation and confirmation of racism where none is present.
Listen to the whole thing:
Hey, if you’re a PoC needing to pee really, really badly and are out and about in public, just head over to any establishment and use their restroom facilities without actually being a paying customer. Walk in with impunity because now is a great time to do so! Just dare any employee to say anything at all to you.
A former fetus, the “wordsmith from nantucket” was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1968. Adopted at birth, wordsmith grew up a military brat. He achieved his B.A. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles (graduating in the top 97% of his class), where he also competed rings for the UCLA mens gymnastics team. The events of 9/11 woke him from his political slumber and malaise. Currently a personal trainer and gymnastics coach.
The wordsmith has never been to Nantucket.
What a crock. I was in Savannah downtown and needed to go to the bathroom. I went to a Panara bread and had to buy a pack of chips to get the code for the rest room . I didn’t think I was being discriminated against because I realize a lot of people don’t buy and want to use the restroom, and then the homeless. I think common sense has been thrown put the window.
Just more attention mongers looking for the TV cameras like they always do and they can always count on CNN(Fake News Network) or the New York Pravda(Times)to cover their little event
Morons, Stand by your business policies and valued employees. The only statement to the public needed was, We stand by our managers decision to contact law enforcement for those loitering without purchase and refusal to leave when asked.
The story would not have gone national, caving caused this and now protests. Press charges or suffer copycats.
In CA the commuter trains have to go real slow because homeless people use the tracks as toilets.
Some of them have even moved into a few of the cars that move thru the city.
If you give an inch they take a mile.
In LB, before I left, the McDonalds gave free coffee to the homeless, but not to paying customers! They also let the homeless use their bathrooms to bathe and change clothes. The homeless also centered their day around tables inside the dining area. The stink in that place was pretty rich.
If you give an inch they take a mile.
When hubby retired in Utah he found two places where he could play pick-up chess games: a private coffee house and a Starbucks inside a Barnes & Noble.
He tried to be careful not to use their restrooms unless he bought something. Since it was a B&N restroom, not a Starbucks one he would buy a magazine, game or something.
After the election the pro-Hillary chess players became so threatening to him and other Trump supporters that he quit playing at either place.
Sad.
But they (the Hillary supporters) would sit in the Starbucks dining area all day, buy nothing and play computer games or chess. Now, I wonder what they’ll do.
Will they show solidarity for their BLM “brothers?”
Or throw them under the bus and continue being sponges?
Next time I visit there on a weekend I’ll know.
While I take great pleasure in Starbucks getting a dose of their own medicine, what exactly did they need to apologize for? Oh… for someone pretending to be offended.
If these two dudes simply conducted a sit-in protest because their weren’t allowed to use the facilities, I guess they didn’t have to go that badly. They weren’t going to get to use the restroom and they weren’t going to buy anything, so why stay? They were cuffed because they would not respect a lawful order by police to leave.
My wife and I spent an anniversary staying in a downtown San Antonio hotel. It was situated where we could walk almost anywhere we wanted to go. The smell of urine in doorways and alleys was overwhelming. We stopped in a McDonald’s for some breakfast one morning and had to be buzzed into the restroom due to the bum problem. Oh… and I am white.
Philadelphia is no different; liberal policies and sanctuary cities have created enormous indigent problems and it affects EVERYONE… not just blacks.
VIOLENCE? Sheesh.
But, again, I hope the High and Mighty Starbucks suffers mightily for this. Maybe it will wake them up to the stupidity of their own SJW agenda. But, I doubt it.
Of course they weren’t racist. And even if they were racist, well, we all now know that we have “some good racist”. Hell, even when they kill people.
What disturbing low level of smoldering garbage today’s party of Trump has turned into.
I’m thinking the idiotic cowardly liar AJ doesn’t realize that Starbucks is a liberal outfit that supports liberal causes. But, then again, he’s a moron.
@Ajay42302: #6
I just wasted 30 seconds of my life trying to figure out what the hell you’re trying to say.
Try again, but this time maybe ask a ten year old to edit your comment for proper sentence structure before you post it, m’kay?
@Ajay42302:
What? Let’s blame everything on Trump and Trump voters. What a dope. The Starbucks manager was probably a Hillary voter.
I can see how these incidents happen, because they have happened to me. I have been unfairly hassled by clerks and store managers for no apparent reason. If I was black, I certainly would have thought it was due to racism. Sometimes, we escalate a situation beyond normal bounds because we are angry or feel aggrieved.
Once, I went to a very fancy country club restaurant with a group from my office for lunch. The restaurant had recently been open to the public for lunch only. It was the birthday of one of the women in the group. We were young and not dressed elegantly. We had trouble getting someone to wait on us. Sensing hostility toward us, I ordered a drink (actually, two). Finally, our order was taken, and two of the women ordered steaks, well done. When the food arrived, the women announced that their steaks were burnt. Being the “senior” person at the table, I took charge and asked the waitress to replace the steaks. She took the steaks away, but then the manager arrived at our table. He refused to replace them due to their policy of not being responsible for well done steaks. I refused to pay for the steaks that were taken away, and he threatened to call the police. I dared him to. The next thing I knew, the front doors of this fancy, dark, quiet Miami Lakes country club restaurant burst open, and cops poured in, their radios blaring. We all stood up and started a shouting match. They dragged me into the back of their squad car until I relented, and paid for the steaks that we were not served (I only refused to pay $4 for the two steaks). Right. All of this grief for $4. Must be racism.
This happened in 1978. If it had happened today, and we were black, the Miami Lakes county club restaurant would probably be shut down, and the manager would be unemployed, branded as a racist. The cops would be fired for racism as well. The incident would be national news, with CNN and MSNBC screaming for blood. As it was, the manager was just a jerk, the cops were ignorant rookies, and I was white and powerless to do anything about it. So much for “white privilege”. Anyone who accuses me of that, I will tell them to GFY.
I see Starbucks is closing its stores to hold Racial sensitivity training the Liberal Stupidity never seems to end and the PC poppycock as well
@Spurwing Plover: What new “racial sensitivity” will they learn? To allow blacks to use the restroom if they aren’t customers? Why don’t they simply change their policy to open the restrooms up to everyone? A policy to restrict use of their facilities only to paying customers is going to exclude SOMEONE, and sometimes that person might not be white.
@Enchanted: I agree. If your a homeless veteran..or homeless for that matter just go ot a Starbucks and settle in. They can’t through you out…and if they try shout racism.
Being on OWG…Old White Guy with an enlarged prostate, let’s just say I make the shop owner a deal, either the restroom or the floor, don’t care which but make a decision fast. Taking up space in an establishment and not buying anything is just plain rude. From an business sense, it’s stupid not to have a policy in place.
@UpChuckLiberals: Besides, Philadelphia being a liberal paradise, those guys could go out and take a dump on the curb outside Starbuck’s door.
Hotep Jesus trolling white guilt and black privilege
So many commenters either aren’t reading the articles and understanding the video; or are simply too dense to get it.
Philadelphia Starbucks Customer: Supposedly Racist Manager ‘Is An SJW Feminist Of The Highest Order’
@Spurwing Plover:
Hopefully, there’ll be a Chic-Fil-a nearby to go to….
@Wordsmith: There was a time prior to the Brwonshirt deer-in-the-headlight allegiance of the con man in chief , that folks like Wordsmith would at least argue on a field of reason rather than rely on such radical spin.
The “problem” per Wordsmith, is that people are either not embracing the propaganda of the likes of The Dailywire and known ultra-partisan pot stirrers such as Ben Shapiro (a guy who wrote “Every time I hear of a black man getting killed by the cops, he’s a criminal thug I have no desire to defend.”) or they’re simply “too dense” to understand.
Your argument Wordsmith, is like me saying that the problem with so many commenters today is that they just aren’t reading or watching and understanding Markos Moulitsas or Rachael Maddow OR they are too stupid to get it.
You might want to analyze the level of the glazed over condition of your Trump loyalty. Or, you may be perfectly content where you are.
@Ajay42302: Leave it to you to find the only thread that isn’t about Trump and wrap your warped luciferian mind around it to make it all about Trump. I know there was no racism before this President, it was a friggin utopia. Seeing a worshiper of Moloch in the White House was a dream of yours, to no longer have to do a bad comb over to disguise the little horns. This must have hurt http://www.patheos.com/blogs/…/2018/…/report-melania-trump-held-white-house-exorcism/.
