The ISIS JV now has enough uranium for a dirty nuke

Barack Obama once famously dismissed ISIS (or ISIL if you will) as the JV:

“The analogy we use around here sometimes, and I think is accurate, is if a jayvee team puts on Lakers uniforms that doesn’t make them Kobe Bryant. I think there is a distinction between the capacity and reach of a bin Laden and a network that is actively planning major terrorist plots against the homeland versus jihadists who are engaged in various local power struggles and disputes, often sectarian.”

The White House team tried to spin the statement to no avail:

The transcript shows that the president was asked about al Qaeda-affiliated groups in Iraq, Syria and Africa, which would include ISIS, when the president made his remark about the “JV team.” That was Earnest’s point when he said the president “was not singling out” ISIS. But, as the transcript shows, Remnick followed up his initial question with a direct question about the “JV team” that “just took over Fallujah,” a reference to ISIS. On Jan. 3, the New York Times reported that “Sunni militants of Al Qaeda … members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS” had planted their flag over Fallujah.

The president can make the case that he wasn’t referring only to ISIS when he made his remark about a junior varsity team. But he cannot say that he “wasn’t specifically referring to ISIL,” because The New Yorker article and the transcript of the interview make it clear that the context of the president’s remark included ISIS.

Let’s go back to this:

“I’ve kept the commitments I’ve made, I told you we’d end the war in Iraq, we did..”

And this (Biden):

“I am very optimistic about — about Iraq. I mean, this could be one of the great achievements of this administration.”

And especially this:

But we’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq…

Iraq has suffered a series of setbacks which is a humiliation to the Obama regime strategy. Speaking of strategies, Obama even admitted that he still really doesn’t have one to deal with ISIS.

Curt reported here that ISIS now has enough cash to buy a nuclear weapon. Today we learn that they have enough uranium for a dirty bomb.

The Isis militant group has seized enough radioactive material from government facilities to suggest it has the capacity to build a large and devastating “dirty” bomb, according to Australian intelligence reports.

Isis declared its ambition to develop weapons of mass destruction in the most recent edition of its propaganda magazine Dabiq, and Indian defence officials have previously warned of the possibility the militants could acquire a nuclear weapon from Pakistan.

According to the Australian foreign minister, Julie Bishop, Nato has expressed deep concerns about the materials seized by Isis from research centres and hospitals that would normally only be available to governments.

At least someone is taking this seriously:

The threat of Isis’s radioactive and biological weapons stockpile was so severe that the Australia Group, a 40-nation bloc dedicated to ending the use of chemical weapons, held a session on the subject at its summit in Perth last week.

“This is really worrying them,” Ms Bishop said in an interview with The Australian.

Well, we can take comfort in knowing that we have the TSA protecting us. No one would be able to sneak in a bomb or anything, right?

Obama has consistently underestimated ISIS. He blamed “bad intel” despite a Congressional report warning Obama about ISIS in 2012. Obama even ordered the training of members of ISIS.

The JV team now has sufficient uranium for a dirty bomb. This has some strong Obama legacy potential. It could be, as Biden might put it, one heck of an achievement.

I don’t think Obama underestimates ISIS so much as he underemphasizes them so that he does not have to address the problem. He wants to deal with global warming (increasing government control) and health care (increasing government control) and keep tabs on every over-blown “racial” incident (increasing government control). And golf.

So, he really doesn’t have the time to deal with a growing terror organization that is gaining more influence, assets and weaponry than al Qaeda ever imagined. Therefore, ignore it and hope it goes away. If it doesn’t, blame Bush.

Since so many ISIS volunteers are cannon fodder to ISIS leadership who knows how many of them will die of radiation poisoning just to collect all this stuff into a place where it can be turned into a bomb.
MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) is not a deterrent when one side doesn’t care if it’s fighters and citizens die.

This, from a non-hysterical, non-fear mongering source:

“The materials they have are not radioactive enough to cause a great deal of damage or function as a working device,” says Esfandiary. “Where the weapon is effective is to cause fear.”

No doubt ISIS greatly appreciates all assistance received in propagating such irrational fears. Where would they be without such help?

Dr Mohammad Zeki Khedher, who was a professor at Mosul university in the 1990s, agrees. “During the 90s most of the scientific materials were taken away by the UN,” he says. “After the occupation of Iraq most of the [equipment from the] laboratories had been smuggled [out of the country].”

However, Esfandiary also warns that “nothing is impossible. If they’re determined enough then they’ll find a way to develop a radiological weapon and use it.”

In their paper, Esfandiary and Cottee say: “The most likely threat is a radiological device of some kind. It is relatively simple to develop a so-called ‘dirty bomb’, in which explosives are combined with a radioactive source like those commonly used in hospitals or extractive industries.”

However, a weapon of this type is likely to cause “more disruption than destruction”, even if set off in central London for example. Esfandiary says that even if such a device were set off in the middle of Trafalgar Square in London, most of the danger would come from the conventional explosive, with little long-term danger to health from the radiological element.

As for the chemical weapons stockpiles, their contents is likely old and partially destroyed or degraded, according to Esfandiary and Cottee. “As chemical weapons go, sarin is particularly susceptible to degradation if it is impure,” they write. “Its shelf life is estimated to be one to two years. While sarin’s degraded remnants are still toxic, they cannot be used as chemical weapons.”

The other chemical weapons in the facility are secured behind thick concrete wall. With no guarantee that the contents are salvageable, retrieving them would be a huge risk in cost and safety.

Ultimately, Esfandiary says: “With the cost and danger to themselves that creating a bomb would cause, the fear that ISIS might be able to build a bomb is more powerful than the bomb itself.”

@Greg: How about you find out what the EPA would require if even one of these “JV” bombs was detonated in a downtown area and get back with me about how little we should be concerned about it. Have a look at how much disruption they want to cause over rain water runoff from a stock farm and let me know how they might react to radiation being plastered over a city block.

Shirking concern is what gave us 9/11.

Shirking concern is what gave us 9/11.

Has any notable republican yet laid out a specific alternate plan of action against ISIS?

They do their best to erode confidence in the administration that’s actually trying to deal with the problem, while offering absolutely nothing themselves in order to avoid political risk. They’re worse than useless.

Republican presidential candidates are speaking nonsense about ISIS

Just how radioactive do you imagine refined uranium to be? It isn’t sufficiently radioactive to pose much of a hazard. ISIS certainly doesn’t have the technology to turn it into a fission bomb. Public perception of the threat posed by dirty bombs is greatly overblown.

@Greg: Almost every one (and some Democrats) recommended against Obama offering the invitation to ISIS to spread across the region. Now you want them to clean up the disaster Obama created? Then vote GOP in 2016.

Perhaps the GOP should state specifically what such a vote would be for before asking for it.

A vote for the GOP is a vote for a third invasion of Iraq, with no more idea how to keep the entire situation from falling to pieces afterward than we had before?
Republicans might need to fine tune the plan a bit. Would we become a permanent occupying presence, continuously at war with new radical Islamic resistance movements popping up on every side for the next hundred years? If so, maybe a vote for the GOP would be a vote for Chinese and/or Russian expansion.

It’s a safe bet that Obama and his advisers have thought this through. Has anyone on the GOP side? They certainly don’t act as if they have.

@Greg: Don’t care much for addressing why we have such a mess to clean up, do you, Greg? Obama KNOWS it will take US troops BACK in Iraq to control and destroy ISIS. This is what he means by “waiting on the Pentagon to give him a plan”; he is waiting for a plan that does not put back the troops he pulled out.

That plan doesn’t exist. There is no other way. Obama cannot admit how badly he screwed up so he won’t consider it (choosing instead to risk their lives 450 at a time).

We wouldn’t be having this discussion if Obama hadn’t squandered the hard-fought victory in Iraq, Greg. The cost for that mistake is going to be great. Thank your Obama for every subsequent death. He caused them, as if he pulls the trigger himself.

Don’t care much for addressing why we have such a mess to clean up, do you, Greg?

Why we have such a mess to clean up has been addressed plenty of times. You just don’t want to accept the obvious: We never should have gone into Iraq in the first place. It was totally unnecessary. It cost thousands of lives and trillions of dollars, and everything that has happened since follows from that original error.

Now you’re wanting to put people back in charge who still haven’t grasped that one simple fact, and who won’t say anything specific about what they intend to do if given another shot at the problem. I’m not going to give these fools another blank check. Claims that ISIS is going to attack us with some sort of dirty bomb are the same sort of fear mongering used to lead us into this mess to begin with. Such claims don’t stand up to a close examination of the facts.

@Greg: You haven’t addressed anything. You have tried to excuse away Obama’s massive blunder. Iraq was pacified. Obama disrupted that. ISIS is controlling much of the country. U.S. Troops WILL be required AGAIN. this is all due to Obama’s arrogance and stupidity.

@Greg:
So you prepared to vote for Hilliary Clinton who when the votes were counted voted for the Iraq war?

Awaiting babbling excuses.

@Mully: Of course, Mully. See, Hillary was lied to… tricked. Fooled with the very intelligence information that was collected under the Clinton administration and supported by both Clinton’s and numerous other high-ranking Democrats long before 9/11 and the Bush Administration.

It’s always someone else’s fault; never a liberal failure.

Uranium ???? well that seems to rule out the possibility of Dr J being a radiologist or at all involved with nuclear medicine. He would have known that uranium isn’t the element to be most feared in hospital equipment
Obama hates do get gleeful when they start imagining worst case scenarios ( that never seem to happen)
It took YEARS for them to stop dancing on the graves of the people who were killed at BENGHAZI!!!

@Mully, #11:

Lest anyone forget, they did lie. If the Bush administration hadn’t selectively cherry picked the intelligence and intelligence community evaluations of it that they presented to Congress, they never would have gotten a majority vote supporting the invasion. What is a lie, if not a deliberate and purposeful distortion of the facts?

They worked their butts off selling the idea that America needed to preemptively invade and occupy a nation that had not attacked us and that had no real capability of doing so. They resorted to calculated fear-mongering in the wake of 9/11 to do it. They turned us into the foreign aggressors, and they never bothered to consider what would happen once we left. And, by the way, they also established a timetable for our departure that could not be unilaterally altered, finalizing it shortly before the Obama administration took office.

Why do you think the GOP has kept GWB hidden away for the past 6 1/2 years? Because the Bush administration is a shining example of GOP competence in the area of U.S. foreign policy?

@Greg:

HRC was not fooled or lied too, she claimed to have done her own research on the Iraq issue and by that cast her vote accordingly. If not then you are willing to vote for someone who was fooled by GWB who the left believes has little if any intelligence. Which at that point says she has intelligence which is far less than GWB.
You might want to rush out someplace and buy a clue.

@john:

It took YEARS for them to stop dancing on the graves of the people who were killed at BENGHAZI!!!

Obama and Hillary have disrespected the people they got killed at Benghazi by lying about how and why they were killed. You are helping in that effort with your blind stupidity.

Obama and Hillary have disrespected the people they got killed at Benghazi by lying about how and why they were killed.

In my considered opinion, that’s partisan bullshit.

@Greg: So, they WERE killed during a protest over a video?

That was an entirely reasonable initial assessment, based on concurrent events and on what was known at the time. Understanding of a situation often changes as more information becomes available, but the right doesn’t want to give up a talking point revolving around its fixation on that initial assessment.

I wonder how many people have figured out that obama wants the muslims to win. I knew obama wanted to overthrow the USA when he said he wants a civilian national security force that is as strong as, and equally funded as the military. At that time I didn’t know who was behind it, but I do now.

@Smorgasbord: I’m not so sure Obama wants ISIS to “win”, but he wants other powers around the world to grow stronger (as the US grows weaker) so that the US is no longer the most powerful and, thus, most influential, nation on earth.

I believe Obama thinks that the US has been oppressive and harmful and once there is an equalization of powers around the world, the US will then take its proper place as just another nation that provides much of the benefits for the weaker around the world.

I also believe Obama does not realize how absolutely stupid this is.

First, the US has done more with its power and wealth to benefit the world than any other nation before and, from what we can see now, ever. One of the ways this is done is to influence events and governments to the ends of making conditions best for their people and future. As we have seen with the liberal model of growing economic health, just throwing money at issues fails. For this to succeed domestically, people need the opportunity to benefit themselves. For it to work internationally, nations need governments that will provide these benefits and opportunities; socialism, communism, fascism, or radical Islam will never provide such opportunity. Show me where any other nation has ever done anything with its power around the world other than build empires?

Obviously Obama does not understand how aggressors react when the US displays weakness. He believes if the US is not as “threatening”, Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, etc, etc will simply stand down and be nice. He is too naive and ignorant to realize they will pounce on the opportunity. Even the example of ISIS in Iraq after his ill-advised removal of all US security from that country has not opened his eyes. A person so ignorant of history has no business guiding a country. Obama is no leader. He is, has been and always will be nothing but a community organizer.

@Bill: ####I’m not so sure Obama wants ISIS to “win”…####

I know that he wants whatever muslim group he belongs to to win.

####I believe Obama thinks that the US has been oppressive and harmful and once there is an equalization of powers around the world, the US will then take its proper place as just another nation that provides much of the benefits for the weaker around the world.####

Why does he want a civilian national security force that is as strong, and equally funded as the military? This is what convinced me he wants to destroy the USA as it is now, and turn it into a dictatorship, with him as the dictator.

####I also believe Obama does not realize how absolutely stupid this is.####

I agree with you on this. I call him a marionette, because he has many puppeteers pulling his strings. When he speaks without a scrip, he just babbles on, and doesn’t say very much, and sometimes doesn’t make any sense. Imagine him as a dictator.

####First, the US has done more with its power and wealth to benefit the world than any other nation before and, from what we can see now, ever.####

I agree, but most of the time, the foreign aid does not go to who it was intended. An example of this, is when the propaganda media used to tell what actually went on, either 20/20, or 60 Minutes told about a factory we built in a foreign country. After the big brick factory was done, the reporter said that it was built where there isn’t any electricity.

The contract stated that a certain American contractor would build it. The contractor was happy, because they got to build the building. The politicians were happy, because I’m sure they got a nice campaign donation from the contractor. The dictator of the country was happy, because he got his cut. The citizens were happy, because a lot of them got jobs helping build a factory that would never be used. It would be interesting to go back to the factory and see what it makes.

####Obviously Obama does not understand how aggressors react when the US displays weakness.####

Have you forgotten how he wants to use the weapon of EMBARRASSMENT to reduce nuclear weapons around the world? When he was campaigning the first time, he said he would accomplish this by reducing the USA’s nuclear weapons, and other countries would be EMBARRASSED, and they would reduce theirs. Again, when he said that, I knew he wants to overthrow the USA. Each thing he does with our military only reinforces my thinking.

####He believes if the US is not as “threatening”, Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, etc, etc will simply stand down and be nice. He is too naive and ignorant to realize they will pounce on the opportunity.####

What if his puppeteers have gotten together with those countries, and the muslims, and agreed to divide up the USA when they defeat us? We are even letting the muslims build terrorist training camps. How many other countries do you know of that let their enemy train inside their own country?

####Even the example of ISIS in Iraq after his ill-advised removal of all US security from that country has not opened his eyes.####

Look at it from a different perspective. What if he was sent here to destroy the USA? Would what he is doing, and what he isn’t doing make sense then? He pulls out of Iraq before we won, and now he doesn’t want to go back in with enough troops to complete the job we should have completed the first time.

####A person so ignorant of history has no business guiding a country. Obama is no leader. He is, has been and always will be nothing but a community organizer.####

He has been pampered all of his life. When he has puppeteers pulling his strings, so that all he has to do is show up in from of the TOTUS at a certain time, and read what others wrote, he only has to know how to be on time, and how to read. Have you noticed that his tone of voice hardly ever changes? This tells me that he doesn’t even read the speeches ahead of time. This would be why he doesn’t know when to emphasize something. I guess he can be called THE GREAT READER.

Whenever they build his library, they have to have his TOTUS all around him, or it wouldn’t be fitting, just like I said that clinton’s library should have female mannequins lined up at the oval office, or it would’t be right.
