Hollywood’s culture of murder and death

By 72 Comments 2,998 views

Following the tragedy in Newtown CT liberals have been falling all over themselves spreading blame. They have targeted the NRA and video games.

The insufferable airheads of Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight have the tragedy all figured out.

Meanwhile, new details are emerging about what might have driven Adam Lanza over the edge.

Published reports say Nancy Lanza went on a vacation to the Omni Mount Washington Resort in New Hampshire, enjoying gourmet food and being pampered at the spa.

She checked into the luxury resort at 12:10 pm Tuesday, December 11 following a five-hour drive from Newtown, Connecticut. She stayed there for three days, and checked out on Thursday, December 13 at 12:27 pm, the day before the massacre.

20-year-old Adam Lanza was back in Newtown during those three days in the words of one headline: “Home Alone To Plot A Massacre.”

It was all because of a mini-vacation. Yikes.

Of course, one obvious and significant part of our violent culture was left untouched by these dopes.

Movies. Hollywood.

Hollywood has contributed mightily to the decay of American culture. We used to have White Christmas, now we have Reservoir Dogs. We used to have Mary Poppins. Now we have Kill Bill. Hollywood has coarsened our culture. It has desensitized kids to senseless murder and senseless violence.

Let’s examine just how much Hollywood has glorified death. Here is an accounting of the deaths that occur in movies courtesy of Movie Body Counts.

Movie Deaths

Rambo, First Blood Part II 67
Gladiator 77
Kill Bill 95
Once upon a time in Mexico 99
Aliens vs. Predators: Requiem 115
From Dusk Till Dawn 122
Dawn of the Dead 131
The Wild Bunch 145
Chronicles of Riddick 187
Bullet in the Head 214
Hard Boiled 307
Kingdom of Heaven 610

and the king of death:

Lord of the Rings (Return) 836

227 have died in Sylvester Stallone movies, 412 have died in Wesley Snipes movies, 322 have bought the farm in Josh Brolin movies and 726 have been killed in Gerard Butler movies.

The highest death tolls for single characters are:

150 Ogami Itto (Lone Wolf and Cub:White Heaven in Hell
141 Smith (Shoot ‘Em Up)
118 John Preston (Equilibrium)
103 Topper Harley (Hot Shots! Part Deux)
96 Tetsuo (Akira)
87 Rambo (Rambo)

There is a top 100 horror movie death scenes site. Some of the reviews:

“Finally, as the suspense climbs, and she enters the kitchen investigating a noise, we get a tension breaker with a cat jumping thru the window. But when Alice opens the fridge to get the cat some milk, she finds the decapitated, rotted head of Mrs. Voorhees, a dreadful sight, and before she can really let loose a scream, a new killer plunges an ice pick into the side of her skull!”

“The other three barely make it out of the car in time as the train plows into it causing a major crash, objects flying everywhere, and a road sign plummets towards Billy and rips his head right off!!! This one borders on pure cheesiness as Billy’s body staggers to the ground but it is still worth the punch it packs!”

“So young teenaged Judith is kind of skanky and slutty, as she ignores her younger brother, even making him trick-or-treat alone, in favor of entertaining her equally white-trash boyfriend in her upstairs bedroom. Judith’s death scene in the original Carpenter masterpiece was quite memorable as we see it through the killer’s eyes, sans Halloween clown mask, but Zombie made sure this sequence of Judith’s death would be quite memorable as well. Judith is stabbed repeatedly over and over by her younger brother, while instead of a clown mask, he dons the classic white mask that came to be known as the face of Halloween, early on as it was a mask that Judith’s boyfriend Steve taunted her with just before their bedroom tryst. Zombie even inserted the classic “stalking” tempo music from the original film as Michael follows a bloody Judith down the hallway, stabbing her again and again until she finally takes her last breath! Just to recap, this sequence is brutally horrifying!”

Be sure to take the young ‘uns.

There is even a site for the Top Ten Tarantino death scenes. You’ll have to find that one on your own.

For all of the whining about guns by TV and movie stars they certainly don’t shy away from their own profiting on death. And there seems to be no end to the desire for them.

A search for gory dearth scenes yields 800,000 hits.

Want blood and guts on TV? There’s CSI, Criminal Minds and the endlessly hemorrhagic True Blood.

Speaking of True Blood, Yahoo just slobbered all over the death scene of a 9 year old.

Death Scene

Hopkins told The Hollywood Reporter about his death scene. “It really surprised me because I didn’t think that I was going to be a traitor on the show.” Hopkins’ time lasted just three episodes on “True Blood,” yet his death scene was one of the most memorable.

Hollywood is as much if not more responsible for a culture of death and murder as is anything else. The NRA doesn’t teach anyone to kill kids, let alone anyone else.

Movies and TV do. Put the blame where it belongs.

You’re blaming Lord of the Rings for the shooting. If you’re that squeamish you shouldn’t watch anything in the first place. It’s unmanly and not normal.

  2. 53

The Tipper Gore/Bloomberg tirade blames Lord of the Rings and Kingdom of Heaven among others. If our culture is THAT sensitive and squeamish (which is to be expected of liberals) nowadays, we have a problem.

  3. 55

Only an idiot or an already crazy individual would kill someone just because someone on TV did, not a normal person. Said nutjob shouldn’t have a gun either. They should be in an institution.

@Joey: Please read this and this .

I am not willing to let liberals insult my cake and eat it too. They can stop glorifying murder and death- maybe that will curb some of the senseless violence. Let them put a little less change in their pockets.

Perhaps those who claim that the entertainment industry doesn’t have any influence on their audiences would like to explain why FDR recruited the entire movie industry to make propaganda movies during WWII? Or why he encouraged Hollywood movie start to do bond drives and the press made a big deal out of a movie star joining the military during WWII?

The influence of the entertainment industry has been a given for the last 80 years. Some will still want to deny that.

After a news media reported on a drunk driving death, has anyone ever heard the news media ask the people not to drive after drinking? Have they asked people who buy a gun to take a training course in the proper and safe use of a gun? Have they ever encouraged people to get involved when someone is in trouble?

A long time ago I figured out that if the news media did all of the above, there would be less news to report. “Good news is no news.” For radio and TV stations, advertisers pay more to advertise on the news than any other show. Most people watch or listen to the news to find out all of the BAD stuff that happened. Very few want to hear about GOOD things that happen.

If one station told a lot more good news stories, and the other’s didn’t, I am guessing they would loose viewers or listeners. Just look at all of the gossip newspapers, magazines, and TV shows there are. When I first saw the Jerry Springer Show advertised, I thought to myself, “Who would watch a show like that?” It turned out that many millions did. I still wonder why. It seems that most people are drawn to bad stuff.

I would like to see a “Moral Value” rating on shows, just like the entertainment industry does for age ratings. I don’t know how many would watch the higher rated programming, but I am guessing that by today’s standards, there wouldn’t be many of us.

What do those posts have to do with the direct point of the topic? Liberals are violent and angry, what else is new? Then they come after the tragedies they commit blaming an object, rather it’s Feinstein, Bloomberg, and the rest blaming guns or Lieberman and Tipper Gore blaming TV violence and video games because they deny people have responsibility for their actions.

    Nan G

You make some great points, Smorgasbord.
Last year I can find numbers on is 2007.
Did you know there were 82,304,668 children in the US that year….0-19 years old.
    Disease killed a few.
    Then there were these things:
    Car accidents: 6,683 deaths
    Firearm homicide: 2,186 deaths
    Suffocation/strangling: 1,263 deaths
    Non-firearm homicides: 1,159
    Drowning: 1,045 deaths
    Poisoning: 927 deaths
    Suffocation suicide: 739 deaths
    Firearm suicide: 683 deaths
    Fires/Burns: 544 deaths
    Firearm accidents: 138 deaths
    Poisoning suicide: 133 deaths

Note what a SMALL % of the total children were killed at all!

    So, what about murder?
In 2007 3,345 American children were murdered.
52.3% of black, male 15-19 year olds who died were murdered.
15.5% of black, male 10-14 year olds who died were murdered.
6.3% of black, male 5-9 year olds who died were murdered.
14.3% of black, male 1-4 year olds who died were murdered.
18.3% of black, female 15-19 year olds who died were murdered.
9.3% of black, female 10-14 year olds who died were murdered.
6.5% of black, female 5-9 year olds who died were murdered.
15.3% of black, female 1-4 year olds who died were murdered.

It is NOT a gun problem.
It is a black child being disposable problem.
    Liberals made black daddies obsolete.
    Liberals took away morality.
Liberals advanced abortion in the poor communities.
Liberals made owning a gun for family protection illegal in many poor communities.

This is the law of unintended consequences.
We cannot protect ourselves into safety.

Read the Book of Job in the Bible.
Satan challenged God that He could put a high wall around Job to protect him from harm and that was the only reason Job might love God.
God allowed all protections to fall away from Job to show Satan that job loved his creator from his heart and not for what he got out of the arrangement.

Liberals have never learned this lesson.

I knew that car accidents were the number one killer of kids. Does the news media keep track of how many kids were saved because someone had a gun to protect them? No. Nor do they report other stories where a gun has saved lives.

One way to protest the media you know are anti gun is to not watch, read, or listen to them. I let the bloggers go through the garbage pits of the media to report the kind of news I like to read about. That way I don’t have to wallow in the propaganda media’s pits to find something worth reading. For the bloggers who jump in the pits for me, THANK YOU.

@drjohn: My son wanted to be a police office, so we put him through school at a technical school that taught the subject. He wanted a gun, so we got him one. He and I had gone hunting different times, and I told him, “Don’t point the gun at anything you don’t intend to kill.”

There was a public shooting range nearby that anyone could go to. It was just an area in the woods with no supervision. When we went there to shoot his gun, I reminded him, “Don’t point the gun at anything you don’t intend to kill.” His five year younger sister wanted to try shooting the gun, and she reminded me of something I have heard before. A woman who has never shot a gun before, can put the slugs in someone’s chest, just a few inches apart from each other, the first time they shoot it. My daughter did that the first time she shot it. On the target, not in someone’s chest. My son was surprised by this.

My daughter was really happy when she did so well, and turned around a little too far. She took the gun off target, but not very far around, when her brother told her, “Don’t point the gun at anything you don’t intend to kill.” I guess the phrase sunk in. It’s how a person is trained to handles a gun that makes them a bad or gun guy.

I guess we shouldn’t read them the Book of Joshua either then if we’re going to be that hyper-sensitive that any violence whatsoever causes them to suddenly be killers they wouldn’t apparently otherwise be.

Actress Says Fellow Actors Hypocritical About Guns: “Most Have Armed Guards”

Actress/producer Alana Stewart says she’s in the minority in Hollywood when it comes to her views on gun ownership.

“It bothers me when the Hollywood elite are all so against people having guns and want rigorous gun restrictions. But I am friends with a lot of them, and most have armed guards with them or outside their homes,” Stewart told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “And I think that is hypocritical. It’s fine to have armed guards, but don’t then tell everyone else they can’t own a gun.”

Stewart doesn’t hire armed security, either. Instead, she sleeps with her gun on her bedside table.

“It is my protection and makes me feel safer. I have had to pull it out a few times when I have heard noises at night, but I’ve never had to use it,” she continued, adding that she grew up in a small Texas town and was in awe of her “fearless” grandmother who would head out into the darkness with a gun in hand when suspicious things stirred in the wee hours.

She’s also well aware of the impact violent films can have on a “disturbed person” and recognizes that new gun laws won’t change criminals’ access to and use of guns.

I find it interesting that hollywood is obsessed with murder and death.
Once you consider that murder is more tolerated than nudity in a film, you really begin to take a step back and look at society in a different way. In what world is showing a kid murder more acceptable than nudity.

I have been concerned about the murders on shows too. Almost all of the detective shows are about murders. They even had a show called, “Murder, She Wrote.” I’ve always wondered why it had to be murder, and not some other crime. One of the best Brady Bunch shows was when one of the kids accused one of the other kids of steeling their toy.

  15. 69

Do you really think adults would watch a show about kids stealing each others’ toys?

All the detective shows since Columbo have been about solving serious crimes, particularly murder.

    @Joey: #69

Do you really think adults would watch a show about kids stealing each others’ toys?

I was supposedly an adult when I watched the show, and liked how it was handled, especially how they ended it. Back then the shows tried to put some moral value in them.

All I am saying is that almost all of the detective type shows are looking for murderers. They almost always shows the one who did the killing is only sorry for getting caught, not for the actual killing. Sometimes when the show shows the actually killing, it is done in a way that makes the killer happy they did it.

There are all kinds of other crimes they could use: High-dollar robbery, kidnapping, extortion, etc., etc., etc. Some of the movies even make the audience root for the bad guys. I don’t know how many times I saw a killing that actually made me laugh. Should someone being killed make a person laugh?
