NASA’s new mission [Reader Post]

“To boldly go where no kuffar has gone before”

Having surrendered to the manned space program to China and Russia in his own version of rocket propelled dhimmitude, Barack Obama has given NASA a new mandate: massage Muslim self-esteem.

H/T Weasel Zippers

Obama gave NASA adminstrator Charlie Bolden three goals:

One was that he wanted me to re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, that he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with predominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.”

Not one of those has anything to do with space flight.

One has to wonder who Bolden was trying to convince in his next answer:

Question: Are you in some sort of diplomatic role .. to win hearts and minds?

Bolden: NO NO, not at all. Its not a diplomatic anything.

He is to engage Muslim nations and help them feel good and somehow that’s not a diplomatic mission.

Right.

It seems like just yesterday when Obama said:

“One of the areas where we’re in danger of losing our competitive edge is in science and technology and nothing symbolizes that more than our space program,” Obama said. “I’ve written about this in my book, I grew up in Hawaii and I still remember sitting on my grandfather’s shoulders as some of the astronauts were brought in after their capsules had landed in the middle of the Pacific. I could just barely see them, I was waving, I had an American flag, and I remember my grandfather explaining to me this is what America’s all about, we can do anything when we put our mind to it

Anything except keep promises, I guess.

“So let me be clear,” he said. “We cannot cede our leadership in space. That’s why I’m going to close the gap, ensure that our space program doesn’t suffer when the shuttle goes out of service. We may extend an additional shuttle launch, we’re going to work with Bill Nelson to add at least one more flight beyond 2010 by continuing to support NASA funding, by speeding the development of the shuttle’s successor, by making sure that all those that work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the shuttle is retired. Because we cannot afford to lose their expertise.”

Whoops. Now read what he said about “the last administration.”

“And that was what the space program described, that sense of possibility and always reaching out to new frontiers. When I was growing up, NASA inspired the world with achievements that we’re still proud of. And today we have an administration that sets ambitious goals for NASA without giving NASA the support it needs to reach them. As a result, NASA’s had to cut back on research, trim their program, which means that after the space shuttle shuts down in 2010 we’re going to have to rely on Russian spacecraft to keep us in orbit.”

As with all Obama promises, this one too came with an expiration date.

It sounded so nice:

“Under my watch, NASA will inspire the world once again and make America stronger and it’s going to help grow the economy right here in Brevard County and right here in Florida. That’s what we’re going to do. That’s what this election’s all about. It’s about raising our sights, seizing the moment, reclaiming our destiny.”

So now we know what it means to raise our sights and reclaim our destiny. It means to help Muslim countries feel better about themselves. That’s what the last election was all about.

The good news doesn’t end there: 11,000 American jobs will be lost so that Muslim countries can feel better. That’s our destiny. No longer will we “set ambitious goals for NASA without giving NASA the support it needs to reach them.” No sir. Now we’ll set ridiculous, tangential and politically correct goals that have absolutely nothing to do with the purpose of the agency and destroy American jobs along the way.

Just to add a bit of humor to the situation, here’s the Obama spin on his policy, mischaracterized as usual. When reading this, keep in mind he has his NASA appointee, Bolden, running around on an international tour, parroting Obama’s observations that the US can no longer advance in space exploration and missions alone:

Later in the interview, Bolden discussed NASA’s goal of greater international cooperation in space exploration. He said the United States, more than 40 years after the first moon mission, cannot reach beyond earth’s orbit today without assistance from abroad:

In his message in Cairo, [Obama] talked about expanding our international outreach, expanding our international involvement. We’re not going to go anywhere beyond low earth orbit as a single entity. The United States can’t do it, China can’t do it — no single nation is going to go to a place like Mars alone.

Obama’s spin on this new diplomat mission for NASA? The WH Press Office statement below comes from the Global Security website.

tatement by the President on the New National Space Policy, 06/28/10

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release
June 28, 2010

Statement by the President on the New National Space Policy

Over the past fifty years, America has led the world in space exploration, broadening humanity’s horizons and our understanding of the universe. And our achievements have in turn led to incredible technological advances that have improved our lives and transformed our economy. We can point to satellites orbiting hundreds of miles overhead that can identify our location within inches, or communications systems that allow information to flow around the world as never before. In part, what has made this progress possible was a commitment by our nation to scientific discovery and technological innovation, and an unyielding faith in the future – even during difficult times.

That is why each President since Dwight Eisenhower has defined a national space policy: to ensure that as we confront the pressing issues of the day, we continue to press forward in the pursuit of new frontiers. Today, my administration is continuing in this tradition. We are releasing a new national space policy, designed to strengthen America’s leadership in space while fostering untold rewards here on earth. For even as we continue our relentless focus on the serious challenges we face at home and abroad, our long term success and leadership as a nation demands that we do not lose sight of the promise of the future.

Our policy reflects the ways in which our imperatives and our obligations in space have changed in recent decades. No longer are we racing against an adversary; in fact, one of our central goals is to promote peaceful cooperation and collaboration in space, which not only will ward off conflict, but will help to expand our capacity to operate in orbit and beyond. In addition, this policy recognizes that as our reliance on satellites and other space-based technologies increases, so too does our responsibility to address challenges such as debris and other hazards. No longer is space just a destination to reach; it is a place where we must be able to work in ways that are responsible, sustainable, and safe. And it is central to our security and the security of our allies, as spaced-based technology allows us to communicate more effectively, to operate with greater precision and clarity, and to better protect our men and women in uniform.

But, above all, this policy is about the boundless possibilities of the future. That is why we seek to spur a burgeoning commercial space industry, to rapidly increase our capabilities in space while bolstering America’s competitive edge in the global economy. We are proposing improved observation of the earth, to gain new insights into our environment and our planet. We set ambitious goals for NASA: ramping up robotic and human space exploration, with our sights set on Mars and beyond, to improve the capacity of human beings to learn and work safely beyond the Earth for extended periods of time. And this policy recognizes the importance of inspiring a new generation of young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. For, ultimately, our leadership as a nation – in this or any endeavor – will depend on them.

In short, this policy, while new, reflects the standards of leadership we have set since the dawn of the space age, and ideals as old as America itself. We do not fear the future; we embrace the future. Even in times of trial, we do not turn inward; we harness the ingenuity and talents of our people, we set bold goals for our nation, and we lead the world toward new frontiers. That is what has ensured our prosperity in the past. And that is what will ensure our prosperity in this new century as well.

I guess the way Obama “strengthens” US leadership is by implementing affirmative action policies….

I posted this on the previous thread. It belongs here as well.

This issue is well beyond the debate of scientific accomplishment of the Muslim world. It is well beyond the affirmative action component of this new mission. Apparently, Barak Obama has decided that the entire Muslim world needs therapy. He has decided that the U.S. tax payers are responsible to provide that therapy. He has generously donated the considerable resources of NASA to provide that therapy. Never mind that NASA is supposed to be our government’s agency charged with space exploration. Barak Obama has made the leap of purpose for our once proud space agency from actually exploring space to building the self esteem of people who are not U.S. taxpayers. Is this even an efficient way to provide therapy for the Muslim world? How many liscensed therapists actually work at NASA? Why not make this part of the socialised medical care we didn’t want?

I once thought that Obama would be limited in the damage he would be able to inflict on the country. Sadly, I was wrong.

@Flyovercountry

I agree. Stay tuned. More is on the way.

As someone who was inspired to do math and engineering (currently a senior at an upper level university studying bio-mechanical engineering). I can only say what inspired me was watching our technology catch up with that of Star Trek’s. Interplannet travel would inspire generations to come. So NASA, set the example for the world again and land a person on mars. As for the Muslim bit, they should feel inferior in the space programs, simply because their space program is (was- since we no longer have one.) inferior.

He’s a muslim. He just needs to come out and say it. He’s representing his muslim roots, like his wife said.

🙄

Maybe NASA can help the Iranians with their rocketry skills – it would be in keeping with their new role as the North American Surrender Agency. (It is sad to see the legendary name and agency mission run into the ground. They’ve been co-opted on the Global Warming scam and now this travesty.)

NASA to help Muslims with their rubberband launcher to get bombs over Israel terror wall.

Is this as stupid as it sounds?

SPONGE: hi, He admited to the egyptian AMBASSADOR, he was a muslim, from his father and grandfather, the egyptian repeated it publicly when he returned to EGYPT. bye 🙄

Engineer: hi, You must surely know the planet MARS will be visible as big as the full moon on 27th august coming and is returning in 2000years, IT said “not to be miss”it mentioned 10/30 eve beginning.: quote of mine” I think the time vary at different locations and also
different clock time table. bye 🙄

Obama’s Re-Election Promise

The promise of “a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage” can be traced to Hoover’s 1928 Presidential campaign.
Well, Obama has twisted these words and is promising that if he is re-elected there will be “a chick in every car and some pot in every garage!”

“… reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with predominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math, and engineering.”

Getting back out into space is going to be a heck of a lot easier.

Feeling good about yourself is based mainly on having something to feel good about.

On second thought, getting back out into space is going to be a whole heck of a lot easier.

I suppose someone a lot smarter than we are can figure out how NASA’s mission involves making anybody “feel good about” themselves.

This sounds like a major step forward in our country’s educational theories, which teach children to “feel good” about themselves, even though they have no clue about what the answers to any of the questions are.

Let’s hear it for the Organizer-in-Chief.

Have they figured out what the new NASA emblem and uniforms will look like. I know they will have the crescent and star, but what else should be on it. All of the female astronauts will have to be covered at all times.

This will assure that just about all engineers currently working for NASA and NASA subcontractors will be bailing out as fast as possible. They do not see themselves as social workers for the muslims, I can assure you. This spells the absolute end of the true mission of NASA, and that is what these guys live for. They will look for other opportunities, abroad if not in the USA.

You reminded me of the disgraceful name they picked for a Marine ship. The USS Murtha. I still have a hard time typing or saying it. I call the ship the USS Surrender. The IRS has been renamed appropriately to the Internal Redistribution Service (From your pockets to theirs)

DR.D: hi, THEY WILL be always welcome in CANADA, and the people hold a great respect for thoses bright minds that we need to help continue the SPACE DISCOVERY, which has been started by PREVIOUS PRESIDENT who had VISION of the possibility to conquer the impossible. bye 🙄

WE must not forget thoses muslim countrys , participated in his election with a big chunk, so he want to give something to make them, FEEL GOOD.

Bees, I don’t want to forget those muzlim countries. I want to do something about them, but this is not at all what I have in mind.

NASA should rephrase Neil Armstrong’s famous words upon first setting foot on the moon and make it their new slogan: “One Small Step for Man, a Giant Leap for ALLAH!”

And another thought: When a Christian finally sits in the White House again, will it be OK if we dedicate NASA to outreach to the Christian world and highlight Christian accomplisments? Or would THAT violate the separation of church and state?

The Left seems strangely silent on all of Obama’s concern for muzlims, does it not? As Mike has just observed, they would be up in arms if a Christian President were doing similar things with respect to Christians. The inconsistency is glaring!

“… they would be up in arms if a Christian President were doing similar things with respect to Christians.”

The thing is, we don’t need somebody else to make us feel good about ourselves. We already do, and have good reason to.

This is “self-esteem” for all muzlims on a grand scale, as a replacement for the space program.

Makes you wonder what the spin–offs from this will be?

DR.D: I think I have AN idea about sending the NASA engeniers to thoses countrys would be to invite them to the opening of that GROUND ZERO mosque

@Dr.D:

The Left seems strangely silent on all of Obama’s concern for muzlims, does it not? As Mike has just observed, they would be up in arms if a Christian President were doing similar things with respect to Christians. The inconsistency is glaring!

I don’t quite see this as a “double standard” issue. The difference here is, there is a perception (a wrongful one, imo) that we have been unjust toward Muslims; that we have waged two wars in two Muslim countries, against Muslims. There is no such perception regarding U.S. persecution of “Christian nations”.

And the comparison is also flawed in that this outreach toward Muslims that amounts to an affirmative action policy isn’t so much about reaching out to religious Muslims, as it is about reaching out to an “ethnicity” (i.e., reaching out to those in Middle Eastern nations).

@ Wordsmith

It seems to me that the double standard issue arises first of all because we have our clearly muzlim pretend president directing a federal agency, NASA, to reach out to muzlim nations, whereas, we have never accepted the idea that a Christian president would direct federal outreach to a nation simply because they were Christian. The MSM does not bat an eyelash over this, of course, just business as usual.

Really greater concern is the idea that NASA is an outreach agency of any sort at all. All Americans understand that NASA is the space agency that has enabled the US to accomplish wonderful things in space exploration. Most also recognize that the space program has been the driving force beyond many spin-off technologies that have enriched our everyday lives here on earth. But it has never been a social service agency; it is a science and technology agency. To divert NASA so totally from it fundamental mission is to so total disrespect for it, and to further gut it in both fact and in spirit.

It is a double standard to say, I allow Obama to say that he can take an entirely secular science and technology agency and turn it to an outreach toward muzlims, when the Left had fits over GWB’s faith-based initiatives to accomplish social welfare programs in our own country. I think this is rather glaring.

TOLERANCE, IS like a volcano, which must explode at times to clean up the debris accumulated
in his core but mostly ouside his boundary, when he’s done, he return inside for more centurys.

THE PARTY in power play many cards to rally their followers : SO the OPPOSITE PARTY, be it REPUBLICAN conservatives, independant an others; should STEPUP to meet the challenge
on the same level of tone and rhetoric rallying the people beleivers in the laws of the lands
ALSO seeking to unite all, should be increase a few tones up. this times is for speech with muscle
not appeasment speech.

Obama has ended NASA jobs, Off-shore drilling jobs, Gulf fishing jobs (thanks to his refusal to help), Coal industry jobs, GM executives, OK that’s some of the Obama job loss count off the top of my head.

Job growth he’s created?: Temporary Census worker jobs (No wait, he can’t claim them. They would have been created no matter what.) What’s that leave? A few more big government jobs, and (if you listen to Nancy Pelosi) more “unemployment” jobs.

Not sure if Pelosi is counting the fishermen, Oil rig rowdies or NASA workers in those “unemployment” jobs, but we already know that the Democrats think it’s OK to count the same people twice, even if they’re dead voters.

NOT acceptable, and very humiliating for our bright minds
from NASA

All this is obvious. Our President is a Muslim. He has so stated. This explains everything.

The biggest reason a people would need to have their self esteem raised is if they had accomplished nothing in the first place, precluding a reason for having good self esteem. It looks like muzzy affirmative action to me.

HeyZeus, just let NASA be NASA and lets explore some space! America NEEDS Astronauts!
