He is a crafty politician, can lie straight faced, win elections but has not handled anything else with any success. If Obama would allow the military to deal with the pirates, it would show some wisdom on his part and not craftiness. He should issue no statements and keep the State Department out of the way.
The lifeboat should be approached by SEALs, a tow line attached and the boat brought away from the area for the proper actions. F-16s or F-15s should destroy the pirates Mother Ships that are enroute. You do not negotiate with the pirates. You quite simply kill them and flood the region with carrier based air to sanitize their shore based operations.
Obama will not order that because it is “American Arrogance” but remember, after a Real President
named Reagan bombed the crap out of Libya, they stopped their terrorist activities in a heartbeat and have not resumed them.

France has regained control of their seized yacht but lost one hostage in the battle. I believe there are two to three other seized vessels – not US – also in different stages.

SEALs with superior training, skills and night vision gear are the quick solution. It will require air power to keep the pirates support elements out of the equation.

Pirates are pirates. If President Obama ordered some kind of military strike against them–and killed only pirates–I find it difficult to imagine that there would be any kind of uproar. To be frank, I wouldn’t even mind if they hung the bodies from whatever the modern equivalent of a yardarm might be as a warning to other pirates.
If what I’ve heard is correct, though, the other pirates coming to the region have hostages from other recent attacks. Does the U.S. act unilaterally and put them in danger? Getting foreign nationals killed to save an American would rightly be seen abroad as “American arrogance.” In your mind, does the president just say, “To hell with you, world!” or does he take more time in the interest of getting everyone free?
As an aside, you can bet that screenwriters are bent over their word processors as we speak. If the captain makes it back safe and sound, he has one king hell mountain of a story to tell the grandkids.

The prime factor here is eliminating the piracy. The foreign nationals governments have not:
*paid ransom
*taken action to intervene to stop the piracy
*The UN has taken no action
*The piracy threat will continue unabated unless the US acts
*There is no Somali government, it is a lawless patch of ground
*Obama’s notion of American Arrogance is basically childish Socialist/Leftist fiction
*The Chinese would be pleased to see the pirates eliminated as that sea lane brings them $Billions
*American Arrogance liberated Europe Twice
*No one else has assets capable to act although piracy is not new there
* If it is not abated, the piracy will most assuredly continue

Simply put, anyone operating maritime assets in that stretch of ocean have been at risk for quite a while. The Crew of the Maersk ship negotiated with the pirates and were betrayed by them.

You people all talk like children playing war games here. Old trooper you better take a look at a map and see where all of this is occurring it is about 200 miles off Somalia. We had 4 naval boats trying to watch an are 4 times the size of Texas. There are 6000 fishing skiffs and 500 larger fishing boats in that area coming out of Somalia. All are armed 99% are not pirates. Just exactly how are you planning on figuring out if they are pirates ? Look for a skull and crossbones ? And MIke when the piracy took off it was all based in the north in Puntland This was the area that allied itself with our proxy army the Ethiopians in their war against the Islamic Courts Union. These were the pro Western Somalians. Now of course after 100-150 million has been paid out (90% while Obama was NOT President) the piracy is spreading south. If taking care of the piracy problem over there was easy Obama would not have inherited it. Piracy can only be controlled by taking its bases and since there has been no effective government in Somalia since the ICU that is not likely to happen soon.
