From His Messiahship’s johnny-come-lately statement on his website:

“As I have said for many months, aggressive diplomatic action must be taken to reach a political resolution to this crisis, and to assure that Georgia’s sovereignty is protected.

Uh… when has he brought this up? Have I missed something of his rhetoric? Did the press, who fawns on his every flatulence, miss him fussing and worrying about Russia-Georgia? Anybody got anything on Obama talking about this region “for many months”???

Hang, I think the guy didn’t have a clue until his advisors filled him in after the fact, so he could compose his new “more Presidential” statement. He was too busy vacationing to have a clue.

Obama is a conflict avoider. He simply tries to avoid conflict at all cost. He wouldn’t address any of the conflicts around him until it was absolutely required. Why am I not surprised he would then claim, as he often does, that he has been talking about this since the beginning of history.

mata, you didn’t miss it, he never said it. he probaly hopes he said it in the past and hopes that all the empty crap he has spewn has something about it in there. he can’t remember how many states there are and he remembers saying something he never said…what a great example of what the dims are putting out there.

Chipset nailed it:

Obama is a conflict avoider. He simply tries to avoid conflict at all cost. He wouldn’t address any of the conflicts around him until it was absolutely required.

What he describes is the very essence of appeasment and the very essence of Democrat national security policy!

Just a few thoughts of my own on what is happening in Georgia with the Russian invasion. All of this is open source or my deductions.

1. The Russian Army was ready en mass to attack into Georgia, suggesting the “Georgian aggression” was fabricated or at least not a surprise. The Russian Army was supposedly under-funded and ill-trained. Unless they are taking losses we are not seeing, this is obviously not the case.

2. Putin (he rules Russia , not his hand-picked “president”) ordered the attack to begin on the start of the Olympics. The world is distracted.

3. The Ukraine threatening to blockade Russian ships if they are used could widen the conflict.

4. Iran …… The Ace or a Joker?
a. Iran tested long ranged missiles in the Caspian a few weeks ago from floating platforms. My guess at the time was so they could launch them from cargo ships. I still hold to that. However, WHY would Russia allow Iran to hold these tests and detonate the missiles at apogee so close to Russian cities? Why, because Russia knew what Iran intended them for and/or provided assistance in creating them and with targeting.

b. Iran could use these missiles (say 3-5 ships with two nukes each) and park 1-2 off each coast and one in the Gulf of Mexico . These ships could then conduct a close-in EMP attack by detonating the nukes at high altitude. This would destroy the US power grid for years to come, rendering us unable to do much to stop Russia . We could track the attack to Iran , but any response would keep Russian hands clean and tie ours. The wild card is if Iran decides to attack Israel at the same time.

c. Iran also needs the international community’s attention diverted away from them right now so they can enrich more weapons grade or weapons capable uranium and delay sanctions.

d. The Georgian troops who were pulled out guarded the Iraq-Iran boarder at Basra . This now creates a temporary gap in the boarder for Iran to smuggle in EFP devices, bombs, equipment, and its fighters to Iraq .

5. Russia can “economically blockade” the EU concerning natural gas and oil. This, combined with renewed Russian AF bomber patrols near North Sea oil platforms (which could be easily attacked) may blackmail the EU into doing nothing until it is too late.

6. The BTC Oil Pipeline. Russia is not stopping in the “disputed” colonial territories. It is going for ALL of Georgia . Gaining the BTC pipeline intact will add to Russia ’s coffers (and resource control) and get rid of “pesky” democratically elected governments.

7. Democrats like Sen Levin were quick to backstab the Administration in their initial diplomatic attempts to scold Russia . Levin got about 80% of the AP story space on Yahoo while the President and VP shared the rest. The actions by the rest of the left will be telling. If the pattern holds, I expect more undercutting and backstabbing.

8. Where (besides Poland who remembers this stuff and is protesting Russia) are the “anti-war” protesters demanding Russia stop its true “war for oil” and war of aggression? Why is there a clear double standard? It should be noted that the Polish protesting in Warsaw are not in the same category as the US useful idiot “anti-war” protesters. The Poles are anti-Russian aggression. The US ones are “pro-anyone who is against the US” and are very pro-war in their silence and treatment of the true aggressors in the world.

9. What are other wild cards like Venezuela , North Korea , and Cuba doing? Their actions could indicate a wider collusion with Russia ’s seeming imperialistic path.

There is more, but the use of Iranian nukes on cargo ships and collusion between Russia and Iran worry me the most. This was TOO well planned and provisioned by Russia not to have been a staged attack followed by a full invasion.

I too see shades of 1930s Europe and Georgia is the Czech Republic . Putin is playing the part of Hitler. Will Europe again play Chamberlin?

UPDATE:

President Bush Returns to White House Issues Strong Statement:

President Bush Discusses Situation in Georgia
Rose Garden
5:21 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: I just met with my national security team to discuss the situation in Georgia.

I am deeply concerned by reports that Russian troops have moved beyond the zone of conflict, attacked the Georgian town of Gori, and are threatening the Georgia’s — Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi. There’s evidence that Russian forces may soon begin bombing the civilian airport in the capital city.

If these reports are accurate, these Russian actions would represent a dramatic and brutal escalation of the conflict in Georgia. And these actions would be inconsistent with assurances we have received from Russia that its objectives were limited to restoring the status quo in South Ossetia that existed before fighting began on August the 6th.

It now appears that an effort may be underway to depose Georgia’s* duly elected government. Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the 21st century.

The Georgian government has accepted the elements of a peace agreement that the Russian government previously said it would be willing to accept: an immediate cease-fire, the withdrawal of forces from the zone of conflict, a return to the military status quo as of August 6th, and a commitment to refrain from using force. There are representatives of the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe currently in Moscow seeking Russia’s agreement to this peace plan.

Russia’s government must respect Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Russian government must reverse the course it appears to be on, and accept this peace agreement as a first step toward resolving this conflict.

Russia’s actions this week have raised serious questions about its intentions in Georgia and the region. These actions have substantially damaged Russia’s standing in the world. And these actions jeopardize Russians’ relations — Russia’s relations with the United States and Europe. It is time for Russia to be true to its word and to act to end this crisis.

League of Hot! Democrazies anyone?

NATO Intervention can take any of many diff deals.

A combat air patrol along with satelite intell for what’s left of Georgia’s rocket artillery target acquisition would prob give Russia a chance to consider their gains thus far:

1. Re absorption of Abkhazia and Ossetia.
2. Demonstrating effective war-fighting capability abroad for the first time since the collapse of the Collectivist Union.

A CAP (and don’t fall for the there is nothing NATO or America could do jazz) would also give Russia a chance to see what all she could lose. Her easy win military prestige wise could evaporate as fast as changing the G8 to G7.

Admitting Ukrania to NATO would signal a red line was crossed in Georgia. Russia is terrified of sweet hot democrazies along her near abroad Western frontier and this would cause pause in her drive to re estab the old collectivist union.

Elecronic Warfare by NATO could render the Red Army’s panzer strike force to communication via smoke signals.

All done from a distance.

On the PR front – NATO could commend a league of Hot! Democrazies to hound and confound Russia at every opportunity – essentially making Russia a self created pariah.

Crunk and disorderly – and hotly stacked with petrol rubles Russia AIN’T all that. Commonwealth’s GRU (military intell) report in Jan admitted Russia may have peaked:

“The management of the Novosibirsk Aircraft Plant had promised to supply six, rather than two, Su-34 bombers in late 2006. Moreover, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) remains only partially operational with 13 spacecraft. Right now, the Army can buy only six to seven, rather than ten, fighting vehicles because raw materials, components, fuel, heat and electricity are becoming increasingly more expensive.

Only 36% of strategic defense enterprises are solvent, while another 23% are tottering on the verge of bankruptcy.

Another problem has to do with human resources. Most skilled workers and scientists are nearing retirement age. At the same time, quite a few technical-college graduates are in no hurry to sign up with the defense industry because of low wages and insufficient career opportunities.

The lack of qualified personnel and up-to-date production equipment will inevitably impair product quality. In fact, India, Algeria and some other countries are beginning to file quality claims.

Since 1992, not a single state defense order has been fulfilled completely and on time. It would be naive to hope that the industry’s problems will be solved in a couple of years. Nor should we expect a major breakthrough this year. All we can do is work patiently, without deviating from the preset program.”

Also -trouble in Georgia was Strategically Forecast way back in January:

“The former pro-Western Soviet republic of Georgia, long a thorn in Moscow’s side, has two secessionist regions that rely on Russia for their economic and military
existence. Russia could easily absorb them outright and thus break the myth that
American protection in the Caucasus is sustainable.”

“Gazprom could swallow up Russian-British joint oil venture TNK-BP, destroying billions in U.K. investment in a heartbeat. Union with Belarus would return the Red Army to the European frontier and turn the security framework of Eurasia inside-out overnight.”

“When that happens, Russia will face a resurgent United States that commands alliances in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Russia must use the ongoing U.S. entanglement in the Middle East to redefine its immediate neighborhood or risk a developing geopolitic far less benign to Russian interests than Washington’s Cold War policy of containment.”

If hounded and confounded by all her ex Western Frontier ‘near abroads’ (that have all picked democracies as the way to go), a concerned and suddenly busy body NATO – Russia would have lots to consider

This must be hard for George. He had a sense of Vladimir’s soul and all.

Sen. Obama would be better served on history if he constantly played Billy Joel’s song ‘We didn’t start the fire.’ But he wont because he already knows everything.

For a historical perspective of when the Roman Republic was weak in supporting an ally: http://annapuna.blogspot.com/2008/08/saguntum.html
Only started the Second Punic War.

Didn’t President Bush say that “Russia is not threat to world peace.” Good comeback Bush crybaby lol When will Bush think of pulling troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. The job is not done yet…what! his feet on the table? Be very afraid of Russia now! LOL

300 foreign policy advisors and the “clueless one” believes this nation should follow his “leadership” of hope and change. Be very worried if this nation choose’s this man to be in charge of global decisions.

The United Nation’s Security Council is a joke along with their pathetic “peacekeeping” force. It’s time to give the entire UN a notice to find another piece of real estate to pander to foreign interest. The appeasement policies embraced by the left is simply not working.

Richard Perle:

Now President Bush will understand the Hapless Jimmy Carter when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan at Christmas, 1979 and the scales (remember the ‘inordinate fear of communism?’) fell from his eyes. Bush and his expert Condi Rice have misunderstood Putin from the beginning and built an American policy towards Russia on a ludicrous look into Putin’s soul.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/presidentbush/2008/08/perle-georgia.html

(He should have put expert in quotes, too.)

Mike,

Here’s that “usual moral-equivalency crapola” from BHO:

“Over the last two days, Russia has escalated the crisis in Georgia through its clear and continued violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. On Friday, Aug. 8, Russian military forces invaded Georgia. I condemn Russia’s aggressive actions and reiterate my call for an immediate ceasefire. Russia must stop its bombing campaign, cease flights of Russian aircraft in Georgian airspace, and withdraw its ground forces from Georgia. Both sides should allow humanitarian assistance to reach civilians in need. Russia also must end its cyber war against Georgian government websites. Georgia’s territorial integrity must be respected.”

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12419.html

Once again, a complex and difficult international situation spun into a partisan issue.

Dave, that was of course Obama’s SECOND attempt in addressing what is happening in Georgia. You know after he had time to see what McCain did. Probably also realizing how closely he sounded just like the Russian talking points in his first statement on the subject.

Obama ’08! He’ll get it right on the second try.

Whew.

I was so relieved to be able to boot up this morning. Not to mention eat a piece of toast.

Thought we was goners.

Of course the thought remains that while the Soviets have their own national interests which oddly enough don’t always reflect those of the US, one thing keeping Putin at the helm and his Russian oligarchs happy with that arrangement is a market for their product.

Somehow I don’t think the Russians want the world’s largest market to cease functioning quite yet.

There are still more super yachts to launch, Renoirs to collect and English football clubs to purchase.

Buzz,

Interesting that someone in a Presidential campaign looking to tell voters – “vote for me, not him,”would wait to see what the other candidate says and then mimic it. Oh, that’s right, I keep forgetting that BHO is a clueless idiot, along with everyone working on his campaign. That explains everything. Well, obviously that tactic will look pretty silly in the Presidential debates, so we will just have to wait and see.

It seems to me that since Georgia had moved into South Ossetia, BHO’s initial comment was appropriate. As time went on, it became evident that the Russian reaction was disproportionate.
Hence the comment above.

Could you cite those “Russian talking points” so that I can compare them to what BHO said?
I can’t imagine the Russians saying – “We really need to stop what we’re doing and show some restraint.” But, hey, maybe they’re clueless idiots too.

What Dave Hussein Noble doesn’t realize is that when you get that 3 AM phone call you have to be right THE FIRST TIME!

Obama’s flip flop on this issue is like his flip flop on everything else. It results from a lack of core principles, no experience, flawed judgement and a desire to do whatever is viewed as politically advantageous.

Could you cite those “Russian talking points” so that I can compare them to what BHO said?

No. Can you demonstrate how you’re qualified to talk about Georgia? Since you always seem to have this requirement of demonstrating how you have experience on a subject, or know someone involved to somehow demonstrate how you’re idiotic opinion actually means something.

Perhaps Obama should learn not to open his mouth until after he gets some information. No wonder you like him so much, he’s just like you.

Of course you shouldn’t like what he had to say though Dave. Don’t you know how he arrived at those conclusions? Maybe you should read the part before you quote: “I just spoke separately with Secretary Rice and President Saakashvili about the grave crisis in Georgia. I told President Saakashvili that I was deeply concerned about the wellbeing of the people of Georgia.” Getting information from that evil neo-con woman, how can she be trusted.

MataHarley typed:

I understand how eager we all are to have someone else as the ‘decider’ but Senator Obama is only a candidate and not yet in charge of foreign policy.

Mike typed:

That Hussein really plays to the rubes Mike. Well done.

The one thing McCain did which was interesting was underscore the importance of being logged onto Wikipedia when that 3:00 AM phone call rings.

You don’t suppose O’Putin is counting on an O’Bummer (Carter-II) win, do ya?

If America can come to the aid of the “oppressed” majority, why can’t Russia?

As the BBC pointed out back in February…
“Russia has indicated it may change its policy towards breakaway regions in Georgia if the West recognises the independence of Kosovo.”

And, no, that doesn’t mean O’Bummer (or any Dem., for that matter) would be better, as the stooopid Lefties will no doubt want to assert.

Buzz,

The bottomline is that you engaged in empty rhetoric about “Russian talking points.” Caught with your pants down you respond by telling me to kiss your ass. Pull your pants up, Buzz, you look silly. Try backing up your rhetoric next time. Or don’t – empty rhetoric seems to be your strong suit.

All power to BHO for talking to a Russia expert. On this issue, I’d consult Condoleeza Rice in a heartbeat. Smart people talk to people who know what they’re talking about regardless of their idealogy. Yeah, and what a dumb idea to talk Saakishvili, huh? I sure hope he doesn’t pull that crap when he’s President.

Condoleezza Rice is back at the State Department [, from vacation].

After a buzz of criticism in the media and on the blogosphere — Agence-France Presse reported that the secretary of State had been “noticeably absent on the diplomatic scene, having failed to interrupt her holidays” — she returned yesterday to tackle the Russian attacks on Georgia.

In a public statement, Rice said she had conferred today with leaders of the G-7 (that’s all the world’s largest economies except Russia) and warned that the attacks on Georgia must stop.

“These military operations need to stop,” she said, reiterating that the United States supports Georgia’s “democratically elected government and its people.” She also pledged to continue to work the diplomatic phone lines.

Countdown to Crawford reported earlier that Rice had been on vacation. Shortly after the item was posted, the State Department returned our call to say that Rice had returned and “is here in the building.”

Spokesman Noel Clay said he would not discuss when Rice returned or “the timetable of personal leaves.” He also declined to comment on Sen. John McCain’s suggestion that she convene an in-person global power meeting on the topic.

“We’re not going to comment on what a presidential candidate says,” Clay said.

Miss ‘mushroom cloud’ must have been waiting for the memo ‘Russia determined to strike the US’ before acting.

Mikes’s America

“What Dave Hussein Noble doesn’t realize is that when you get that 3 AM phone call you have to be right THE FIRST TIME!”

Anarchists know full well the damage they intend to cause.

It’s like Obama inhaling. THAT’S THE POINT – with Obama to get high, and with the malicious trolls to cause whatever problems they can, like to get Obama elected because that will cause suffering and discontent nationally, which they can make use of to make more discontent and cause more trouble.

I knew of guys like Stoner and Gnoebles and WD-40 and Dougy back in the 60’s. They haven’t changed a bit. They are the same Leftist trouble makers now as they were then.

Take Obama’s dick out of your mouth Dave, you might be able to talk sense and see for once. Maybe I’ll leave notes when I’m engaging in hyperbole for effect next time. That way you will be able to follow along and not be so confused. For instance, no I do not believe you are actually blowing Obama, despite your wishes to do so. I’ll try to be more simplistic and direct when speaking to you, since you worked your way through college to get a degre, and have a son in the military, and actually know black people, thus qualifying you to speak on subjects related to that. I am still waiting for your qualifications to talk about Georgia though.

Yeah, and what a dumb idea to talk Saakishvili, huh? I sure hope he doesn’t pull that crap when he’s President.

You mean making a statement and then talking to someone after he opened his big mouth? Requiring to change his statement, putting him more in line with his opponent’s original remarks. Yeah I sure hope he doesn’t pull that. Of course that’s not what you’re trying to say.

Oh and you can kiss my ass, just wipe your mouth first.

Doug said:

“Miss ‘mushroom cloud’ must have been waiting for the memo ‘Russia determined to strike the US’ before acting.”

Doug: That’s a low blow and beneath the veneer of civility that you usually try to convey.

But since you drew attention to the “memo” I’d like to remind everyone of this one:

National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States: The following is the text of an item from the Presidential Daily Brief received by President William J. Clinton on December 4, 1998. Redacted material is indicated in brackets.

SUBJECT: Bin Ladin Preparing to Hijack US Aircraft and Other Attacks

1. Reporting [-] suggests Bin Ladin and his allies are preparing for attacks in the US, including an aircraft hijacking to obtain the release of Shaykh ‘Umar ‘Abd al-Rahman, Ramzi Yousef, and Muhammad Sadiq ‘Awda. One source quoted a senior member of the Gama’at al-Islamiyya (IG) saying that, as of late October, the IG had completed planning for an operation in the US on behalf of Bin Ladin, but that the operation was on hold.A senior Bin Ladin operative from Saudi Arabia was to visit IG counterparts in the US soon thereafter to discuss options-perhaps including an aircraft hijacking.

IG leader Islambuli in late September was planning to hijack a US airliner during the “next couple of weeks” to free ‘Abd al-Rahman and the other prisoners, according to what may be a different source.
The same source late last month said that Bin Ladin might implement plans to hijack US aircraft before the beginning of Ramadan on 20 December and that two members of the operational team had evaded security checks during a recent trial run at an unidentified New York airport. [-]
2. Some members of the Bin Ladin network have received hijack training, according to various sources, but no group directly tied to Bin Ladin’s al-Qa’ida organization has ever carried out an aircraft hijacking.Bin Ladin could be weighing other types of operations against US aircraft.Accord-ing to [-] the IG in October obtained SA-7 missiles and intended to move them from Yemen into Saudi Arabia to shoot down an Egyptian plane or, if unsuccessful, a US military or civilian aircraft.

A [-] in October told us that unspecified “extremist elements” in Yemen had acquired SA-7s. [-]
3. [-] indicate the Bin Ladin organization or its allies are moving closer to implementing anti-US attacks at unspecified locations, but we do not know whether they are related to attacks on aircraft. A Bin Ladin associate in Sudan late last month told a colleague in Kandahar that he had shipped a group of containers to Afghanistan. Bin Ladin associates also talked about the movement of containers to Afghanistan before the East Africa bombings.

In other [-] Bin Ladin associates last month discussed picking up a package in Malaysia. One told his colleague in Malaysia that “they” were in the “ninth month [of pregnancy].”
An alleged Bin Ladin supporter in Yemen late last month remarked to his mother that he planned to work in “commerce” from abroad and said his impending “marriage,” which would take place soon, would be a “surprise.””Commerce” and “marriage” often are codewords for terrorist attacks. [-]

778 days passed between the time President Clinton recieved the above warning and the time he left office. HE DID NOTHING.

So, if you want to stir all that up again Doug, bring it on!

Buzz,

I use to think you were Mike’s alter ego, but now I doubt it, he’s got more class. My comment was from an old poster about Nixon. The point is that when people get caught screwing up, they have a tendency to get surly – it’s all they’ve got left. Now we know just how far you’ll go when called on your mistakes. You win the vulgarity contest, Pal, I won’t join you in the sewer. Now if you could only move beyond rhetoric, hyperbole, and your high school locker room fantasies you might have something to add to the discussion.

IT’S OBAMA’S FAULT

The Georgian president is on a timer. It’s now or never. It’s now to pacify separatists and take firm control of his troublesome territory before Russia has the ability to act with utter abandon. It’s act now when he might have at least some hope that his American ally might come to his aid. Now is probably his last chance to see America assist a struggling democracy against the grasping, anti-liberty Russian Bear. Once Obama gets into office, the world knows that the USA will likely not come to the assistance of any democratic nation striving to survive.

Once Obama gets into the White House, bad actors the world over understand that they will be on the rise. And Mikheil Saakashvili understands this and made his move accordingly.

Obama’s weakness has been the catalyst for this conflict.

…which, is a plausible enought assertion, though, as I said above (#20) Bush’s adoption of Clinton’s bastard child, Kosovo, certainly laid the groundwork. Of course, had Bush not done that, the very real weakness of a very possible Obama presidency could alone account for Russian boldness.

Dave how about you demonstrate you are actually worth more than being referred to in vulgar terms and I’ll stop doing it. You know perhaps you can stop focusing on throw away portions of comments and learn to read.

Why did it take Obama two times to get your quoted statement? Since when is listening to a member of the Bush administration a good thing? Why does Obama’s quoted statement come off so close to McCain’s original statement, and why is that such a good thing that you think it is? Are you going to loan Obama the time machine you are creating to fix the war in Iraq the correct way so he can get his statement right? When are you going to give your qualifications for talking about Georgia?

From ‘It’s Obamas Fault’

‘Once Obama gets into office, the world knows that the USA will likely not come to the assistance of any democratic nation striving to survive.’

Of course once Obama is inaugurated the Georgia/South Ossetia/Russian episode will be entirely concluded.

And the reason the Russians acted now was a direct consequence of Vladimir’s manipulation of his soul mate George W. Bush.

Another foreign policy triumph for the Bush administration.

“Of course once Obama is inaugurated the Georgia/South Ossetia/Russian episode will be entirely concluded.” — STONER

Of course it probably will be, but if it’s only a first step, which is highly likely and which the sentence you quoted [“‘Once Obama gets into office, the world knows that the USA will likely not come to the assistance of any democratic nation striving to survive.’”] made quite clear, oh dim of wit.

As to Bush’s contribution to it, I was also quite clear, and without the help of the socialist propagandists over at the HuffnPuffPest.

They continually pretend that Bush’s failures are “proof” that their guys would have been better choices. It’s one of their perpetual lies.

778 days passed between the time President Clinton recieved the above warning and the time he left office. HE DID NOTHING.

So, if you want to stir all that up again Doug, bring it on!

Notice that they chose not to carry out the threat while Clinton was in office. On that score at least, he comes out ahead of Bush.

Tortured beyond belief yonason. Read your post I responded to once again.

Note the sentence (in red CAPS) ‘IT’S OBAMA’S FAULT’.

That is a lie.

Yet another failed foreign policy of the Bush administration but this one the fault of the Democratic presidential candidate months away from taking office. It isn’t the Senator’s fault George clearly was hoodwinked (along with Condi) these past eight years by Vladimir.

It’s definitely George’s fault.

And to suggest the interview with Zbigniew Brezezinski I linked with at the Huffington post is somehow the ‘help of socialist propagandists’ is pathetic. Even

Big Papa reminded me of this gem:

Arthurstone, you seem to derive a Bush failure from Gardels interview with Brzezinski. Altho I know you love to blame anything and everything on the current admin, your conclusions are erroneous.

Brzezinski’s observations of Bush in particular are dated. This was 2001, while the WTC was still smoking. Putin was the first world leader to call Bush to express condolences. Against the will of his administration and advisers, he was willing to develop closer ties to the US.

Putin’s push for closer security ties to the U.S. is part of a wider gambit. Putin wants to lead Russia closer to the West in a broad and urgently needed modernization–not just of its battered army but also of its economy, schools, and legal institutions. The goal is to create for post-Soviet Russia a lasting place in the family of nations to which Putin feels his country rightly belongs–even though it now lags behind by just about every conceivable measure.

~~~
QUIET EDUCATION. Yet for those who looked, the signs were already there that Putin was not an ideologue with a rigid Soviet mentality. A posting in East Germany in the 1980s gave him the chance to learn the differences between the Eastern and Western German economies and societies firsthand. Those lessons stuck: Putin was gradually won over to the side of capitalism. After the Soviet Union collapsed, he helped attract Western investment to St. Petersburg as a deputy in the mayor’s office.
The Putin Bush spoke of then is obviously not the Putin today. Perhaps Russia’s status as the 2nd largest oil producing country in the world (only behind Saudi Arabia) has given him a new vision. With the resource becoming rare and in demand, he may have come to the conclusion that Russia doesn’t need relations with the US. For it is we who are beholding to foreigners to maintain our strength, powered by our exports with require petroleum to produce. It is the US with the world’s most powerful military – a military that requires petroleum to remain functional.
Note that Bush has never repeated that praise for Putin.
In order to further engage in the latest rage of “Bush bashing” – and lacking any other Bush praise for Putin in recent years – Brzezinski dragged Condi into his Bush admin criticism with her comment. Yet despite Putin’s change over the years, Time made him person of the year in 2007.
At significant cost to the principles and ideas that free nations prize, he has performed an extraordinary feat of leadership in imposing stability on a nation that has rarely known it and brought Russia back to the table of world power. For that reason, Vladimir Putin is TIME’s 2007 Person of the Year.
Were Bush’s, and his cabinet, diplomacy the failure you proclaim after reading Brzezinski’s interview, Congress would have to been very vocal, pointing to the error of his ways. Nary a word of criticism about our relations and diplomacy with Russia. Perhaps that’s because the DNC Congress sided with Russia about Iraq… birds of a feather and all.
Instead, they were too busy trying to withdraw from Iraq, at the height of their violent cycle, in order to appease their MoveOn.org base. Perhaps, to use Obama’s words, the DNC took their “eyes off the ball” INRE Russia. However their silence, at a time when they would criticize Bush for any minute detail, means they too believed the diplomacy course with Russia was the proper way to go.
Bush has remained on good G8 relations with Russia, even while recognizing they’ve been on the opposite side of most issues than the US. The US even went to far as to acquiesce to Russia’s preference not to offer George NATO alliance. As Brzenzinski said:
Brzezinski: The West desisted from extending the NATO “membership action plan” to Georgia — a preparatory stage for becoming a member — out of deference to Russian objections. It is now clear that the deference shown to Putin, in the face of his obvious ambitions, has been counterproductive. In view of what has happened, NATO ought to extend the membership action plan to Georgia, therefore reinforcing the commitment NATO made in Bucharest last Marchto the effect that NATO intends, at some future point, to include Georgia.
It would seem to me that this is yet another in a long list of examples that proves acquiescence is overrated… most definitely with our enemies, and even with those that are not outright enemies.
Which pretty much makes your boy, Obama, the biggest fool to run for POTUS, and the pick of the litter for those countries that are looking for the nation to elect a fool they can manipulate in the WH.
BHO’s first reactions were embarrassing, and the remarks of an undereducated simpleton. It was obvious that he had to go do some homework before coming up with a statement (probably with the help of his speech writers) that demonstrated any credibility as a potential POTUS.
Yet JSM “got it” immediately.
To make matters worse, not only did “the boy who wanted to be King” flub his initial reaction outing, he then proceded to lie about being concerned and talking about this issue “for many months”. And you bought this line of BS hook, line and sinker? Shame on you.
Obama’s nothing more than another sleazy Chicago style politician, a power hungry mongrel, and an open Marxist. And, to put it bluntly, he is just too stupid on far too many levels… from economics to foreign policy… to occupy the Oval Office.
Hey, Mike’s America, that’s right! Obama’s uncle was driven crazy by what he saw at Auschwitz, and it was the Ruskies that liberated it… hmmm, you don’t suppose we oughta CHECK that attick?!
“The Putin Bush spoke of then is obviously not the Putin today.” — Mata Harley
Careful, MA, I smell a “that’s not the O’Putin I knew” coming.
But, seriously, nice backgrounder.
And with Brzezinski on the job, no wonder O’Bummer can’t even sound like he knows what he’s doing when he parots the advice he gets.
Yonason: I think Obama’s crazy uncle is the one writing his foreign policy press statements. No doubt they’ll make him National Security Adviser if given the chance.
MataH: Scratch beneath the surface of the latest Bush bashing over the new war in Europe and you’ll find most of these lefties just itching for another round of appeasement to the Russians that they long favored during the Cold War.
Something tells me you won’t find these lefties clamoring for stronger measures to punish Russia for their aggression or to embrace the Georgians and Ukrainians.
“I think Obama’s crazy uncle is the one writing his foreign policy press statements.” — Mike’sAmerica
LOL I suppose his “good friend” John Edwards taught him how to “channel” the dead?
As to the appeasement, now they probably are salivating at the prospect of yet another chance to get it wrong in a big way.
Stoner thinks it’s straining credulity to put any blame on O’Bummer?
Well, the Iranians didn’t let the embassy hostages go while Mr. PeanuT was in office. But within minutes of Reagan’s inauguration the hostages were released. Talk about the power of expectations. (NO CONSPIRICY THEORIES, PLEASE!!!)
A wuss like Obama [Mr.Peanut-II] would not only give hope and encouragement to the Russians and all our foes, but the belief that he currently stands a better than even chance of becoming president can’t help but affect their behavior NOW, and that’s the point.
Stoner wants to pretend that a coward in the office of the most powerful nation on earth will improve our image? It will make us a laughing stock, as we probably already are for allowing that faker to get as far as he has.
And I guess you could also just as easily blame Americans because of their support for Obama. And with nearly 50% of the nation siding with that loser, what do we expect countries are going to think, if not that America has gone to the dogs?
They continually pretend that Bush’s failures are “proof” that a Democrat would have been a better choice. It’s one of their perpetual lies.
Dit Wit threw this into the mix: “Notice that they chose not to carry out the [9/11 attacks] threat while Clinton was in office. On that score at least, he comes out ahead of Bush.”
Yeah, I guess they were too busy:
DW,, Athur,,, you two doing a 69?????
This wasn’t about your BDS, but about Nobama and his/her inabilaty to deal with the situation…
But thanks for “opinions”….
What you really have to remember about me is that I’m not a die hard GW fan.. we (GW and I) disagree on many things…
Yon.. you got me really laughing on that one… Careful, MA, I smell a “that’s not the O’Putin I knew” coming.
Certainly for the anal that reside here regularly, any change of mind is considered a flip flop. And how kewl you beat them to the punch! LOL
I don’t mind when people change their minds to match events on the ground. Obama, however, is not one of those. He grabs onto an opinion, and remains stubborn. He just projects himself as more flexible now in order to BS the electorate for their vote. This man listens to no one except his image guy, Axelrod. Screw the generals on the ground, eh? Make that foreign policy speech *before* you take your Euro vacation/campaign swing… Duh wuh.
Amazing just how much of America buys into this BS. Not only buys this nonsense, but go to bat against friends and relatives to defend this loser. Downright unbelievable.
MataHarley
Thanks. Yeah, I was tryin to “head ’em off @ the pass” a little.
It’s quite a phenomenon, all right: how so many can invest so much of themselves in so darn little.
