The Obama Double Standard

Posted by: Curt @ 7:02 pm in Barack Obama, MSM Bias

Peter Wehner explores some of the vitriol leveled at ABC and the two moderators of the last Democrat debate and doesn’t like the double standard at play:

And what did Stephanopoulos and Gibson do to earn this scorn? Why, they asked Barack Obama some probing questions, including one about his past relationships with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Jr. and a former leader of the Weather Underground, William Ayers.

Consider this thought experiment: Assume that a conservative candidate for the GOP nomination spent two decades at a church whose senior pastor was a white supremacist who uttered ugly racial (as well as anti-American) epithets from the pulpit. Assume, too, that this minister wasn’t just the candidate’s pastor but also a close friend, the man who married the candidate and his wife, baptized his two daughters, and inspired the title of his best-selling book.

In addition, assume that this GOP candidate, in preparing for his entry into politics, attended an early organizing meeting at the home of a man who, years before, was involved in blowing up multiple abortion clinics and today was unrepentant, stating his wish that he had bombed even more clinics. And let’s say that the GOP candidate’s press spokesman described the relationship between the two men as “friendly.”

Do you think that if those moderating a debate asked the GOP candidate about these relationships for the first time, after 22 previous debates had been held, that other journalists would become apoplectic at the moderators for merely asking about the relationships? Not only would there be a near-universal consensus that those questions should be asked; there would be a moral urgency in pressing for answers. We would, I predict, be seeing an unprecedented media “feeding frenzy.”

The truth is that a close relationship with a white supremacist pastor and a friendly relationship with an abortion clinic bomber would, by themselves, torpedo a conservative candidate running for president. There is an enormous double standard at play here, one rooted in the fawning regard many journalists have for Barack Obama. They have a deep, even emotional, investment in his candidacy. And, as we are seeing, they will turn on anyone, even their colleagues, who dare raise appropriate and searching questions–the kind journalists are supposed to ask. The reaction to Stephanopoulos and Gibson is a revealing and depressing glimpse into the state of modern journalism.

When the nominee is finally picked and the general debates start up….will any of the MSM talking heads dare to ask these kind of character questions of Obama?

Nothing to see here, move along. Ignore the man behind the curtain….

David Axelrod has played a huge part in creating the character of the Obamessiah. This is the same man that was successful in getting Deval Patrick elected (Remember the “Words matter” dust up). Axelrod also ran Spitzers campaign as well as Edwards 2004 campaign and Mayor Daley was one of his first clients. His modus operandi is to “sell” personalities and not policies. Mommy was a writer for a leftist tabloid, PM, with communist influence during the late 1940’s.

George Stepanoplis in this debate proved he has become a mouthpiece for the corporate right winged media. To go so far as to take word for word suggested questions from Sean Hannity shows how shallow he has become. Where were the real issues in this debate??? The Health care Crisis, Outsourcing of jobs, Iraq?? Gas Prices??? Who really cares if Obama he has a lapel pin flag on?? I have to call this last debate nothing more than a right wing talking point debate.

Let me get this straight, Sky55110. Two *very* liberal moderators (who have not changed party affiliation last I knew) ask questions you don’t like of the DNC candidates, and somehow this is the fault of “corporate right winged media”??

Desperate….

Look out. Your next door neighbor farted. Must be that evil Bush, cooking beans in the WH Rose Garden.

You’re truly an embarrassment to the party of “tolerance”, lumping everyone into GOP or DNC categories. Haven’t figured out yet that most of us are a mix of two, eh?

It’s all their fault even though going to war was bipartisan as were the interrogation methods and now that the dems control Congress, we are still at war. Hmmm.

Barack was asked questions he did not want to answer, too bad, there will be more of it because the man’s got baggage, brace yourself.

BTW Stephanopolis didn’t have to have the rightwing Hannity pressure him into anything, he and the rest of the press have been fed Hillary’s opposition research, as well as Obama’s. Timing could not have been more perfect for Hillary, the Hannity/Steph conversation came at such a convenient time.

Thank you very much Missy, I do my best to contribute to the discussion.
Sky, you seem to be showing your true colors here: “just another right winger that can’t stand that Obama (a black man) who has shown he does have what it takes to be president.” You’re basically charging that the biggest problem that conservatives have with Obama is that he’s black, and by extension that we’re all a bunch of closet racists. That’s exactly the sort of (hateful) thinking that Jeremiah Wright’s been spewing, which is precisely why we’ve questioned Obama’s extensive association with him over twenty years; not to mention citing him as the inspiration for his writing. If Obama genuinely doesn’t share in his ideology, then why did he stay in that church for so long while Wright was there; Wright didn’t exactly hide his rhetoric. On the other hand, if he does agree with Wright’s ideology, then we’re looking at the biggest Identity Politics (affirmative action, etc.) focused administration in American history. I’m sorry, but I refuse to have my as of yet unborn children be punished for sins that my ancestors didn’t commit.
The other thing that alarms us, and in fact seems to alarm a good deal of the Democratic Party’s working class core, is the “Marxist - Stalinst” elitist thinking BHO seems to hold at his core. His comment about the “bitter” citizens of Middle America clinging to religion was a virtual “religion is the opiate of the masses.” This is where Obama is causing problems for the Democratic Party, because America is decidedly a nation of faith. Now, it’s one thing to criticize someone’s beliefs when they use them as a justification for violence, or a tool for manipulating others. But, it is entirely another to dismiss someone’s beliefs when it revolves around improving personal conduct and coming together as a community in their places of worship. Obama’s charismatic “uniter” personae of “hope” and “change” is actually quite divisive.

When I first saw Michele and Barack on the national stage I was impressed. Then I listened to what they said.

For conservatives it’s never been about race. It is about competence, judgement, experience and character.

Condi Rice would qualify in all those areas. B. Hussien Obama clearly DOES NOT!

First of all the Jeremiah Wright controversy should be of no concern to you. Why did he stay at his church for twenty years?? First you have to remember Obama was led to Christ by Jeremiah Wright. That is something a Christian does not take lightly. Nor does Obama it’s simple as all that.
He stayed there for twenty years because of his conversion to Christianity… and YES he is a Christian for all of spewers out there that think otherwise.

Obama Clearly has the intelligence, competence, Judgement, Charater to be president.

Talk to me about grandmama Obama, you know the typical white bank VP. How about mama Obama spreading her legs for Marxists at 18 while “living on food stamps” and going to Harvard. Skye55110, I’ll just have to disagree with your glowing approval rates of Obama’s “judgment” on Iraq and foreign policy.

Obama’s Iraq “judgment” was first made without access to any of the intel and briefings offered to US Congress. So as far as I’m concerned, he wasn’t working with all the facts. Yet that lack of a full picture didn’t stop him from making a determination…. which he now touts as correct. The latest Iraq Perspective Study, Pentagon IV, report from the ISG and Harmony documents disputes that illogic. But even now, he choses to ignore historic facts because it proves inconvenient to his campaign rhetoric.

And while you may believe Saddam’s relationships with terrorists (including a 10 year relationship with Zawahiri), his underground thwarting of sanctions using OFF and jihad/militants that operated black market channels in Iraq, plus his stashes of biochemicals and proscribed missiles mean nothing, I do.

We can’t reverse time to see, had we left Saddam in place, whether he would have provided jihad movements with his bioweaponry. But he was proven to have a history of cooperating, funding and supplying the jihad movement as part of his country’s arsenal. It was easy, as the finger didn’t overtly point to him. And for that alone, it was worth removing Saddam. Not to mention, regime change has been US policy since Clinton’s admin.

So I disagree completely with your Obama/Iraq “judgment”.

I also disagree with your Obama/foreign policy. Traveling around as a kid and a young teen is not the point. How many friends you have with different cultures is also not the point.

Obama’s foreign policy judgment is easily seen as naive (nay.. dangerous) when he proposed his cowboy policy of going after Bin Ladin on actionable intelligence in Pakistan… even if they refused to agree or provide aid. Can you say unilateral action on an ally? He will take Pakistan, and make it another enemy with that train of thought.

And to propose that during campaign babble, prior to the Pak election, was absurdly stupid. We are now rewarded with a PPP leadership who wants to “talk” with their militant tribal leaders, refuses more joint strikes (only Predator drones), and warns the US not to come near their borders. Musharraf, at least, was bold enuf to stand up to those in the country and provide a tacit approval. He has paid dearly for that witih the loss of election in Pakistan, and being demonized by the western press. Brilliant move… we lost the only renegade in that government, and the road is only uphill from here. Both McCain and Obama will have a problem with the new Pakistan government. It’s a collision course in the making.

Then, of course, both BHO and HRC are busy making less-than-friends with our other allies by attacking trade agreements. US industry’s inability to compete with foreign products is not so much about the trade policies as it is about the OSHA and enviromental criteria mandated by our govt. And add to that the union wages and benefits. All these make it very expensive for a US manufacturer to operate.

While there is no easy solution to that… and I do lament the US losing so much basic manufacturing over the past 4 decades (starting with steel)… I can certainly say that slamming the door shut on trade agreements is not only NOT the cure, but damages our relationships with other nations. Absurdly stupid to stir up animosity on one hand, and whine about the US standing in the int’l community on the other.

BHO’s too naive, too socialist for this country. He may indeed win since the US electorate has been dumbed down now for decades, and our youth are educated with the notion success is “given” by the government, and not “earned” by the individual.

And we will all pay dearly while that lesson is being learned under a sociality DNC government.

Skye, you’ve said many on this site are “not letting me down with so much to crap spewed in your responses.” I suggest you stop throwing rocks from your glass house.

The subject questions from the debate are issues that MSNBC and CNN raises daily. Where I agree with you that Wright, Obama’s religious beliefs, and other BS that the media has seized upon are trival and matter not to me, they are products of not only a liberal media, but of the DNC itself as they duke it out. You are truly pathetic, and a perfect example of the “victim” mentality of the party you so obviously choose to support.

You also obviously have not read the translation and analysis of the ISG and Harmony Saddam regime docs retrieved from Iraq in 2003 or you wouldn’t be making statements as you did with Saddam and AQ.

Briefly a few facts, but I suggest you read more for *your* next glass of koolaid.

1: Saddam has documented dealings with Zawahiri since his assumption of leaders of Egyptian Islamic Jihad in 1993. He merged that group with AQ in 1998. I did not say there were documents with Zawahiri dealings as AQ’s #2. I said dealings with Zawahiri. Now if you believe, because Zawahiri changed the name of his organization from EIJ to AQ, that Saddam all of the sudden decided Zawahiri experienced a dramatic ideological change, than you are even more misinformed than you appear.

2: If you think that the only named enemy the US faces carries an AQ membership card, then you understand nothing of just what and who is AQ. It is an association - an umbrella group of constantly morphing members that share the same goal. Implementing Islamic law in all Arab lands (by violence and force, not legislation), and eliminating all traces of western culture in the same. They work in tandam with other groups with the same goal, or those who have a common enemy to achieve a step towards that goal. They work with tribal leaders, militant movements and jihad movements in all countries. i.e. the Somalian tribal leaders who attached out forces in the early 90s, the Pakistanis, the Taliban and neo Taliban, et al. So do not confuse the enemy just because they don’t wear an AQ badge.

And BTW, I can’t stand Hannity. However I do believe the UNMOVIC May 2004 quarterly report that documents massive amounts of convoys moving things furriously out of Iraq before, during and after OIF. The same UNMOVIC report documents Iraq proscribed missiles - acquired AFTER 1998 - being dumped in a Netherlands junk yard.

I also believe Georges Sada when he says there was indeed weaponry that was moved to other countries. If you choose to not believe it, that’s your perogative. But I’ll believe my sources are more viable than your emotional opinon. Then again, there is that pesky detail just what constitutes a WMD. Is a thimblefull of chemicals on an illegally possessed missile enuf for you? Or must it only be nuclear? In which case, just how many must die before you categorize it as a WMD?

Lastly, I pray for your son’s safe return. I’m a former military wife, and so value our warriors. I thank him from the bottom of my heart. And hopefully you will too, as he and others before him fought just so you can speak your mind here.

MataHarley,

Thank you for your prayers for my son… I also pray for him. very often. I just got off of Skype talking to him.

I still find your remarks about UNMOVIC questionable.. at best. I just saw a report by an FBI agent explaining exactly what Saddam had. His report said very directly Saddam hated Al Queda. and that he did NOT have WMD after the Kuwait war. Also that he did NOT hide or dump WMD.
I believe this war is a total misuse and abuse of our military and should never have started…

Saying that I also believe we did not finish the job in Afganistan. not even close. The Iraq war has made the USA and all it’s allies less safe. Because of the spread of AlQueda. We took our eyes off the target by going into Iraq. I want Oshama Bin Lauden tried and hung.

George Sada is a former General… very political.. more than likely that motivates what he says.

Check the with the recent stories from our the FBI.. They had an FBI man with him for months before he was put to death.

George Piro, covered here.

sky, you talk a lot about kool-aid drinking. Can you not see that you yourself have fallen off the partisan deep end?

When you write

Then your suggestion that Saddam had a relationship with AL Queda when he hated Al Queda is quite frankly crap!

You are only half-correct, but miss much. It tells me you’ve only cherry-picked what you want to hear in your kool-aid-drinking stupor, leaving behind the rest of the tree, untouched.

MataHarley is very generous in trying to point you the way, and you don’t even thank her for the time and efforts. She’s also shown you great courtesy. Instead of engaging her on the facts, you find it easier to just brush it all under the rug as something cooked up by Hannity and FOX News.

Clear signs of a kool-aid drinker.

I apologize for the tone in my last comment. I published it before I saw your last comment.

I wish I had more time, but I don’t. Gotta run out the door now.

Hope we can have a respectful debate, and drop the talks of kool-aid.

Loved it when I was a kid, though!

Skye, I forgot to add the hotlink to the above post… which hasn’t appeared as of this posted comment. I’m still waiting to be released from the Flopping Spam filter, as my last three have ended up. And when they do appear, I can’t edit them.

So here’s the link to which I refer in that post.

May 2004 UNMOVIC report.

Cheers! And I’m quite sure that all the Flopping Ace’rs -active or past serving military - also send their best to your son.

The 935 lies, alledgedly told by the Bush Administration, was done by two liberal anti-Bush organizations. It was debunked by bipartisan Congressional committees before the Soros funded organization even started the study. One wonders why dems that were saying the same things weren’t included in the study. Hmmm.

More of Obama’s judgement thing, where does he find these friends?:

Skye55110.. .it appears my previous post to you has been eaten by the FA SPAM gods… LOL

I take no offense at your “questionable - at best” response. Tho I truly wish you’d apply that same healthy skepticism equally to your own party and candidates.

I have provided the link to the UNMOVIC report for you to read yourself. (see 4/21/08 at 1:13pm post above)

Also, Sada did not want to write Saddam’s Secrets, but was convinced that the US needed to know the truth in light of all the poo poo’ing for political posturing going on.

He’s a fascinating character and makes for a good read. I highly recommend it. The man’s brother is the Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad. He’s been pressuring him to cop to the truth of receiving a portion of Saddam’s hidden treasures. However Bashar knows that would not only put him in disfavor with the Syrian higher echelons, but put his life in danger. So I’m not holding my breath.

My, we certainly seem to have gotten a bar room brawl going on in this thread.
Looks like I have some catching up to do since my last post, so I’d better get to it.
First, Missy; Sky’s dismissing them out-of-hand as not “credible” aside, thanks for adding more food for thought on BHO to the discussion.
Second Sky, let me quote from what I assume was your response to my post: “You guys are again not letting me down with so much to crap spewed in your responses. First of all the Jeremiah Wright controversy should be of no concern to you. Why did he stay at his church for twenty years?? First you have to remember Obama was led to Christ by Jeremiah Wright. That is something a Christian does not take lightly. Nor does Obama it’s simple as all that.”
Now, just calling what your opponents say “crap” at the outset is no way to advance a debate; and doesn’t make those in this thread very inclined to give you much respect.
Second, saying that the Jeremiah Wright controversy should be of no concern to us; doesn’t make it so. Calling Black Liberation Theology Christianity is also a “stretch” as you like to say. Now, my first pastor was definitely someone who I respected, and I still remember the time I spent in his church. However, if he had begun spouting racist or anti-American tirades, I can tell you my family would have been quick to voice our displeasure with his words, and be quickly out the door if that continued to characterize his ministry’s message.
Jeremiah Wright is just the tip of the iceberg of Obama’s inability to judge the character of his associates. There’s a reason why Americans have chosen their leaders based on character in the past, as opposed to simply by slick slogans and rhetoric.
That being said, as a parent of one of our brave soldiers, you have my thanks and fervent hope that your child returns home safely.

Machiavelli… welcome to the fray. Order me a B-52 shot please…

Skye… forgot to mention INRE your “forgot to finish the job” in Afghanistan comment.

UN/NATO has been in full charge of Afghanistan’s national security since July 2006. If you remember current events, the escalation of violence also began in that same time period.

Prior to that, the UN and NATO forces still held command over most of the country, save a few areas patrolled by the US. The most violent, of course, because of the joke that passes for NATO rules of engagement.

My point? You cannot blame failures in Afghanistan on the US or our military. We did exactly what the DNC and most the of the country wanted. We put it into the int’l hands of the UN and NATO. If you wish to assign blame, first look at the UN, then look at the US electorate who insists time after time that we get “int’l support”. It is yet one more lesson for the history books that if you want a job done right, don’t give it to the UN or NATO.

I am not Blaming our military for not finishing the job in Afghanistan… I am Blaming BUSH for taking his eye off the ball!!! namely going after until he had Bin Laden… That was a HUGE mistake on Bushes part! Saying we did exactly what the DNC wanted and the rest of country wanted by putting in a UN international support… that would have been fine AFTER getting Bin Laden…
but NO BUSH wanted to invade Iraq… Someone here suggested that Iraq is a bipartison war. I’m sorry but it’s not.. I hold BUSH accountable for plotting how he would convince (LIE to) congress it was necessary. And for the whole BOTCHED war.

Machiavelli.

Apparently your brand of christianity is better than others… (not) excuuuuuuuuuse me for pointing that out!!!!

It’s just this simple:

“The truth is that a close relationship with a white supremacist pastor and a friendly relationship with an abortion clinic bomber would, by themselves, torpedo a conservative candidate running for president. There is an enormous double standard at play here, one rooted in the fawning regard many journalists have for Barack Obama. They have a deep, even emotional, investment in his candidacy.”

My gawd, look at how the press has tried to create and exaggerate relationships re Sen McCain and his quasi alleged lobbyist affair. Somehow or another that deserves being looked into, and Sen Obama’s relationships to a racist anti-Americans/Al Queda sympathizing “reverend” and to known terrorists doesn’t warrant a question? Gosh, I’m sorry…I bet that sounded…

…”bitter”

at least I’m not out of bounds in the assertion:

Did bin Laden escape, or did we let him get away by Bush “taking his eye off the ball”?

Based on your 5AM post today (4/23), Skye55110, it’s obvious you have not bothered to read the UNMOVIC report I provided the link for above.

I suggest you read that. Rapidly followed by the Iraq Perspective Study/Pentagon IV report (the READ THE FULL REPORT HERE link found at the top of this ABC news story)…

…and when you’re done - and ONLY when you’re done - THEN get back to us about those “lies” you parrot from DNC talking points. Until you have that data under your belt, your comments are really nothing more than emotional venting. Understandable with your son in the line of fire. But I’m sure he’d better appreciate an informed Mom.

And right on, Wordsmith… INRE Bin Laden’s escape. They called for a truce during Tora Bora, where Bin Ladin used the quiet to steal into the night, back into Pakistan to a convenient hole in the wall located in the tribal militants back yard.

If anyone dropped the ball, it was those who not only think we should negotiate with militants, but actually buy into their truces… which are nothing more than a “regroup” moment for further warfare.

Can anyway say “what’s up in Palestine, Jimmah??”

and SATURDAY SNEAK…BUSH LIES…Trailers Of Mass Destruction, Part Two…”You remember when [Secretary of State] Colin Powell stood up in front of the world, and he said Iraq has got laboratories, mobile labs to build biological weapons….They’re illegal. They’re against the United Nations resolutions, and we’ve so far discovered two.* And we’ll find more weapons as time goes on, But for those who say we haven’t found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they’re wrong. We found them.” (italics ours) –WP, “Bush: ‘We Found’ Banned Weapons. President Cites Trailers in Iraq as Proof, ” May 31, 2003

and here is the war monger himself Cheny

“We believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons.”
—Vice President Dick Cheney on NBC’s Meet the Press, March 16, 2003

Then Rummy:
“I don’t believe anyone that I know in the administration ever said that Iraq had nuclear weapons.”

Ad hominem attacks do not advance your argument. However, given BHO’s 10 point drubbing in Pennsylvania, I can understand how you might be “bitter” about it.
However, you err in assessing my post; my point was that my family and I would show better judgment than BHO has; and he’s the one who thinks he should be President.
I “hope” that makes things clear to you. But, since it appears nothing is going to “change” your fervor for BHO, I’m not going to waste time with the religious argument.

Senator Obama was reportedly named after his father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr.
The Senator’s first name, Barack, is a Swahili name that has its origins in the Arabic language. The original Arabic root of the name (B-R-K) means “blessed.” In Arabic, the root word is used in many other phrases to denote blessings and to describe people who are blessed:

Mabruk! = “Congratulations!”
Barakallah feek = “May God bless you”
Barakah = blessings from God (feminine version of the name)
Senator Obama’s middle name is Hussein, which was his grandfather’s first name. The name, of Arabic origin, means “good” or “handsome one.” It is common in Muslim cultures for children (both boys and girls) to have a middle name which directly connects them to their father or grandfather.
Senator Obama’s surname is not uncommon among the Luo tribe, one of the three largest ethnic groups in Kenya.
