Democrats Long For The 60’s

The raving lunatic is at it again. Rep. Rangel wants to start the draft again for no other reason then to create another Vietnam.

Americans would have to sign up for a new military draft after turning 18 if the incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has his way.

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., said Sunday he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars and to bolster U.S. troop levels insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.

“There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm’s way,” Rangel said.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, said he will propose a measure early next year.

In 2003, he proposed a measure covering people age 18 to 26. This year, he offered a plan to mandate military service for men and women between age 18 and 42; it went nowhere in the Republican-led Congress.

Democrats will control the House and Senate come January because of their victories in the Nov. 7 election.

At a time when some lawmakers are urging the military to send more troops to Iraq, “I don’t see how anyone can support the war and not support the draft,” said Rangel, who also proposed a draft in January 2003, before the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

He knows we don’t need it but he also knows that the draft in the 60’s created the movement that forced the United States to turn coward and run from millions of Vietnamese. So if a draft would be instituted today then he believes we would turn tail and run.

Then all his fellow cowards could hug and toast to beating Bush while millions of Iraqi’s suffer.

No skin off his back I suppose.

Remember, this is the man who said Iraq is worst then what Hitler did to 6 million Jews: (via The Shape of Days)

On Monday morning, during a radio appearance on WWRL-AM, Rep. Rangel described the invasion of Iraq as “the biggest fraud ever committed on the people of this country.” He went on to say that it’s “just as bad as the 6 million Jews being killed.”

Radio-show host Steve Malzberg gave Rangel a chance to back down from what was clearly an unjustifiable and thoughtless remark. Rangel did, slightly, saying, “People’s silence when they know terrible things are happening is the same thing as the Holocaust.”

The lunatic goes on to highlight the typical leftist talking point:

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families.

Which is quite wrong:

it is commonly claimed that the military relies on recruits from poorer neighborhoods because the wealthy will not risk death in war. This claim has been advanced without any rigorous evidence. Our review of Pentagon enlistee data shows that the only group that is lowering its participation in the military is the poor. The percentage of recruits from the poorest American neighborhoods (with one-fifth of the U.S. population) declined from 18 percent in 1999 to 14.6 percent in 2003, 14.1 percent in 2004, and 13.7 percent in 2005.

[…]In summary, the additional years of recruit data (2004–2005) support the previous finding that U.S. military recruits are more similar than dissimilar to the American youth population. The slight differences are that wartime U.S. military enlistees are better educated, wealthier, and more rural on average than their civilian peers.

Recruits have a higher percentage of high school graduates and representation from Southern and rural areas. No evidence indicates exploitation of racial minorities (either by race or by race-weighted ZIP code areas). Finally, the distribution of household income of recruits is noticeably higher than that of the entire youth population.

But no matter. Everything that spews from the mouths of a Pelosi, Murtha, Reid and Rangel are all wrong so why should this be any different.

He wants drafts sit-ins, burning draft cards, and hippies smoking pot while burning our flag. This is their goal. It doesn’t matter what kind of effect this will have on the Iraqi’s or our military. It doesn’t matter that military service will become wildly unpopular, or that the quality of the military will plummet. All of it be damned, just so long as they can say “see, Bush was wrong!”

In the end this is doomed to failure but will give his side some lip time to show the rest of us how freakin lucky we are not to have one of them in the White House.
