The Open Border Activists Behind the Illegal Immigrant Caravans

Loading

You may have heard about theĀ caravanĀ of immigrants from Central America making its way through Mexico in the hopes of illegally crossing the border into the United States. The group of perhaps 4,000 to 7,000 people has made its intentions clear: entering the U.S., even if it means violating American immigration laws.

But you may not have heard of one of the key organizers behind the caravan:Ā Pueblo Sin Fronteras, or ā€œPeople Without Borders.ā€ And Pueblo Sin Fronteras wants to keep it that way.

Some left-leaning publications such as theĀ New York TimesĀ haveĀ saidĀ that ā€œno group has claimed responsibility for organizing [the most recent] caravan,ā€ perhaps in order to stave off claims by President Trump and other conservatives that it is being aided by left-wing activists in the United States.

TheĀ Times, however, is only partially correct. While no single group has claimed control of the migrant caravan, at least two activists from Pueblo Sin Fronterasā€”Denis Omar Contreras and Rodrigo Abejaā€”are embedded in the caravan, according to theĀ Los Angeles Times,Ā theĀ Washington Post, and the Mexican newspaperĀ La Jornada.Ā Contreras (sometimes spelled Contera or Contrera) reportedly helped lead the caravan to illegally enter Mexico, where heĀ toldĀ migrants ā€œWelcome to Tapachula!ā€ (referencing a town near the Guatemala border). Abeja, too, wasĀ identifiedĀ as one of the leaders of the April 2018 caravans, which were also supported by Pueblo Sin Fronteras.

On October 18, Irineo Mujicaā€”director of Pueblo Sin Fronteras in Mexico and an American citizenā€”wasĀ arrestedĀ by Mexican officials for allegedly attacking immigration officials at a pro-illegal immigration protest near the Guatemala-Mexico border.

And while Pueblo Sin Fronteras organizer Alex Mensing, an American,Ā toldreporters that Mujica was not involved in the most recent caravan, Mujica was detained in April for leading a previous caravan into Mexico with the support of Pueblo Sin Fronteras. A March 23, 2018Ā press releaseĀ on the groupā€™s Facebook page lists Mujica as its Mexico contact, as well as Mensing in the United States. And in an October 21Ā press releaseĀ also signed by Mujica, the group accused the governments in Mexico and Central America of adopting ā€œa policy of fear and racism imposed by the United States, doing its dirty work and shouldering the cost of repressive tactics that do not take into account the root causes of this exodus.ā€ The group then demanded Mexico become a ā€œsanctuary country.ā€

(Itā€™s worth noting that the other signatory on the October 21 press release was Viridiana Vidal, a former NBC Telemundo journalist who quit her job in June 2016 to become aĀ self-describedĀ activist ā€œagainst racists like Trump.ā€ Sheā€™s now the Nevada state director ofĀ Americaā€™s Voice, a union-funded left-wing advocacy group.)

Also worth noting is the protest Alex Mensing organized in San Francisco, California, in support of the caravans, where he said:

Itā€™s time the Guatemalan government stand up for its Honduran brothers and sisters. The people who are currently fleeing Honduras are being forcibly displaced from their country . . . Ā and that is a direct result of the corrupt Honduran government and U.S. intervention and support for that corrupt government.

But who is Pueblo Sin Fronteras, anyway?

The group appears to be a remnant of the now-defunct 501(c)(4)Ā La Familia Latina UnidaĀ (ā€œThe United Latin Familyā€), a Chicago, Illinois-based illegal immigration advocacy group formed in 2001 by illegal immigrant and activistĀ Elvira Arellano. The two groups are regularly listed side-by-side with each other and have overlapping staff. The groupsĀ claimĀ to have organized approximately 1,000 economic migrants from Central America to cross the U.S. and Mexican borders illegally since 2010 (prior to most of the caravans). They also share the same Chicago address (2176 W. Division St., Chicago, Illinois, 60622), which is also the same address as the Adalberto Methodist Church in which Arellano once hid from U.S. immigration authorities prior to founding La Familia Latina Unida.

Although La Familia Latina Unida had its IRS tax exemptionĀ revokedĀ in May 2017 for failing to file a Form 990 tax return for three consecutive years, the Illinois Secretary of Stateā€™s websiteĀ listsĀ the group as currently active. (Its tax-exempt status is currently unknown.) Regardless, Pueblo Sin Fronterasā€™s efforts continue with the aid of a third organization: theĀ Centro Sin FronterasĀ (ā€œCenter Without Bordersā€), a 501(c)(3) illegal immigration organizing group headquartered in the Lincoln United Methodist Church in Chicago.

The Center is headed by Emma Lozano and her husband, Walter ā€œSlimā€ Coleman, who founded the group in 1987 following the murder of Lozanoā€™s brother, left-wing community organizer Rudy Lozano. It hasĀ calledĀ for a ā€œmoratorium on all raidsā€ by immigration authorities, comprehensive immigration reform ā€œthat provides legalization for the 12 millionā€ illegal immigrants in the country, and a ā€œrenegotiation of NAFTA and other trade and financial agreementsā€ to better suit the interests of Mexico.
