McConnell Claims Democrats Have “Buyer’s Remorse” After Pelosi Puts “Hold” on Impeachment

Loading

Following the House vote to pass two articles of impeachment on to the Senate for final adjudication, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi put a hold on the process: “We cannot name managers [to present our case to the Senate] until we see what the process is on the Senate side. So far, we haven’t seen anything that looks fair to us.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called it a stall and a comedy:

Speaker Pelosi suggested that House Democrats may be too afraid to even transmit their shoddy work to the Senate. The prosecutors are getting cold feet in front of the entire country and [are] second-guessing whether they even want to go to trial.

They said impeachment was so urgent that it could not even wait for due process but now they’re content to sit on their hands.

It is comical.

Editors at the Wall Street Journal said Pelosi’s stall has moved the impeachment process “from folly to farce.”

McConnell said Democrats were now suffering from “buyer’s remorse”:

I am glad that leading Democrats seem to have buyer’s remorse about the least fair, least thorough, and most rushed impeachment in American history. They should. But for the sake of the country I wish this understanding had dawned on them yesterday.

The Constitution gives the House the sole power of impeachment, and the Senate the sole power to try all impeachments. It’s similar to an indictment handed to a grand jury to hear the evidence and rule on guilt or innocence. The House indicted Trump under two articles and the Senate will conduct a hearing of the evidence before voting to acquit or affirm. It’s a two-step process.

But the process can’t continue until the Senate receives the articles and hears the evidence supporting them.

According to Noah Feldman, one of the four lawyers who testified during the House impeachment hearings, “if the House does not communicate its impeachment to the Senate, it hasn’t actually impeached the president. If the articles are not transmitted, Trump could legitimately say that he wasn’t truly impeached at all.”

McConnell thinks Pelosi’s delay in transmitting the articles to the Senate is a ruse, seeking leverage over the Senate: “Some House Democrats imply they are withholding the articles for some kind of leverage. I admit, I’m not sure what leverage there is in refraining from sending us something we do not want. Alas, if they can figure that out, they can explain.”

He added:

Following weeks of pronouncements about the urgency of the situation … the prosecutors appear to have developed cold feet. Democrat prosecution seems to have gotten cold feet, and to be unsure about whether they want to proceed to the trial — like I said, a very unusual spectacle. So we’ll see whether House Democrats ever want to work up the courage to actually take their accusation to trial.

If the articles are transmitted, the Senate has two options: to vote to dismiss them out of hand and move on to other matters, or to hold a trial and acquit the president.

The president wants a trial:

So after the Democrats gave me no Due Process in the House, no lawyers, no witnesses, no nothing, they now want to tell the Senate how to run their trial.

Actually, they have zero proof of anything; they will never even show up. They want out. I want an immediate trial!

The Wall Street Journal summed up the present situation:

@Greg: ALL the propaganda emanates from the left. Trump has obstructed nothing; there has been nothing to obstruct. Democrats have concocted an impeachment out of fantasy, wishes, suspicion, opinion and lies. Their little theater of the absurd only works when Democrats are allowed to control all the information released, who gets to call what witnesses, what constitutes “evidence” and what a “crime” is. Pelosi tried to convince McConnell that she, not he was the Senate majority leader. McConnell made her look like the total idiot she is. Outside of their rarified world where their spoiled little brats get to make the rules or a police state court, this “impeachment” is going to wither and die.

Your Democrats have proven themselves to be total fools. How they thought this stupidity would work in the US when they don’t have complete control is a mystery.

But, we got to see what their control would look like; no Constitution, no rules, no laws, no justice, just the rule of their ideology. Trump hasn’t seduced anyone; he merely got Democrats to expose what they really are: DESPOTS.

@Greg:

He has also seduced many evangelical Christians as well, to the point where they reflexively reject anyone who dares to point out Trump’s moral failings and calls for a return to traditional Christian principles of word and deed

Trump hasnt sued any nuns, excuse us bitter clingers for seeing that one.

Dont you need to have a date with Chris Matthews to watch a full version of Achmeds Funeral while singing Elton Johns, Candles in the wind?

@Greg:

There were thirteen republican witnesses who have direct, first hand knowledge of the truth who were subpoenaed by the House to come forward tell it. None were allowed to do so. They were ordered to defy those lawful subpoenas by the man who is under investigation.

Oh, my, the President exercised his Executive Privilege just like Bubba Clinton did when he was impeached. Oh, the horrors!!!!! Nevermind that the House had full rights to seek subpoenas in the courts. They opted not to.

The Senate majority leader has publicly stated that the Senate trial will not be impartial;

Not what McConnell said, liar.

that he is following the marching orders of the man who is under investigation;

Not what McConnell said, liar.

that testimony of those who know the truth will not be heard, and that the outcome of the trial is foreordained, contrary to the affirmation oath that he and every other voting senator will swear before God.

It is not the responsibility of the Senate to cure the House errors. Continue to show your stupidity when it comes to the Constitution, Comrade Greggie. No one here pays any attention to you. What about the oath Adam Schiff-for-brains swore? He blatantly lied about the phone call that he now wants to remove Trump from office for. It is clear you have no objection to Democrats lying. You eat those lies up like a dog laps up water.

@retire05, #103:

Not what McConnell said, liar.

Perhaps you’re a bit too slow to grasp the meaning of what McConnell said. This seems to be a common problem among those who let Trump and his propaganda outlets do their thinking for them.

McConnell:

“Everything I do during this, I’m coordinating with White House counsel. We’ll be working through this process, hopefully in a short period of time, in total coordination with the White House counsel’s office.”

“The president’s counsel may or may not decide they want to have witnesses. The case is so darn weak coming over from the House.”

“I’m going to take my cues from the president’s lawyers. But yes, if you know you have the votes, you’ve listened to the arguments on both sides and believe the case is so slim, so weak that you have the votes to end it, that might be what the president’s lawyers would prefer.”

The Senate Majority Leader is not supposed to be the obedient servant of the President and his lawyers. He has certain sworn duties that come with his position in Congress, one of which is to see that articles of impeachment passed in the House result in a properly conducted trial, an impartial hearing of testimony and evidence, and an impartial judgement based upon that in the Senate. The assertion that he can simply dispense with all of that because he’s “got the votes” is an insult to our entire constitutional system of checks and balances and to the American people that Congress represents.

Hopefully there will be enough republicans who are conscious of their sworn duty to prevent McConnell from destroying any remaining integrity the Republican Party can still lay claim to.

I don’t expect you to understand any of that.

@Deplorable Me, #101:

Trump hasn’t seduced anyone; he merely got Democrats to expose what they really are: DESPOTS.

It’s the flaming egotist in the White House who believes he should be answerable to neither statutory law nor to oversight or constraint by Congress. He demonstrates that by his actions. Either you don’t know a wannabe despot when you see one coming, or you do, but you feel the need for a master.

@Greg: Coordinating with the defense counsel is normal, send overall the evidence, when dealing with the President he must run the country so setting up schedules, witnesses for the defense if called, who would also have important government jobs.
You take it any TDS way you want, we dont really care what the insane power mad DEMs want.

@Greg: Awww he looks like Cupid

@Greg:

The Senate Majority Leader is not supposed to be the obedient servant of the President and his lawyers.

In no way, form or function is he. He is doing EXACTLY what the Democrats did in the Clinton impeachment.

What McConnell is saying, which you desperately try to ignore is that the impeachment case the Democrats present is WEAK. Abysmally WEAK, completely devoid of evidence or even a crime. Trump has often stated he wants witnesses, testimony and EVIDENCE presented to destroy the Democrat’s case and expose their motives, but the quality of the Democrat’s articles makes that totally unnecessary; they don’t HAVE to draw this out. It’s worthless, everyone (especially Peloisi) knows it and all it needs is a vote. However Trump wants to do it.

It’s the flaming egotist in the White House who believes he should be answerable to neither statutory law nor to oversight or constraint by Congress.

That’s pretty funny coming from someone that takes the position that all a person needs to be is a Democrat and a candidate for office and they are totally and completely immune from investigation or responsibility.

Let me be clear, and you would do yourself a great favor to take this seriously: NO ONE believes Trump has done anything even remotely close to impeachable. NO ONE but whiny, sore lower, crybaby liberals who seek nothing but revenge for Trump beating Hillary. NO ONE. ANYWHERE. It is a complete joke and all the Democrats supporting this look like nothing but idiots.

Like a good, experienced Democrat, Pelosi threatens to blame McConnell because she abused impeachment
