On Tuesday, House Republicans released a report on the Benghazi attacks, finding that “senior State Department officials knew that the threat environment in Benghazi was high and that the Benghazi compound was vulnerable and unable to withstand an attack, yet the department continued to systematically withdraw security personnel.”
As House Oversight chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) put it, the report shows the testimony of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was “just wrong.” From a report at Politico:
“The secretary of state was just wrong. She said she did not participate in this and yet, only a few months before the attack, she outright denied security in her signature in a cable [dated] April 2012,” Issa said on Fox News. “The thing that our report shows and our continued investigation shows is they had a policy of normalization appearance. They did everything they could to make it look like they had won the war and had the peace.”
He added: “And so the policy that you saw in that April cable is the policy that led to the ambassador being exposed and killed, and led to the absence of a plan in what is still basically a war zone.”
Issa cares little for Democrat caterwauling about partisanship: “None of it’s been disputed. I bless the Democrats’ hearts, they like their report, but they can’t find a factual error to ours.”
Discussing the new revelations, liberal columnist Kirsten Powers noted that no one is stopping the Democrats from investigating Benghazi, and they could have contributed to the House report if they wanted to.
More jagged little pills of straight talk were teased from the report by the Washington Times:
In the most damning conclusion, House Republicans said Mr. Obama’s team lied about the attacks afterward, first by blaming mob violence spawned by an anti-Muslim video, and then wrongly saying it had misled the public because it was trying to protect an FBI investigation.
“This progress report reveals a fundamental lack of understanding at the highest levels of the State Department as to the dangers presented in Benghazi, Libya, as well as a concerted attempt to insulate the Department of State from blame following the terrorist attacks,” the GOP investigation concluded in its 46-page report.
