CBS News deceptively cropped body camera footage that showed a 13-year-old boy holding a gun before he was fatally shot by Chicago police in March.
A law enforcement officer fatally shot Adam Toledo during an encounter in response to gunshots heard on a police scanner. Police said Toledo ignored “verbal directions, fled, used significant force, and was armed with a semiautomatic pistol,” which is why the officer fired.
Body cam footage released this week appears to show Toledo holding a weapon moments before he was shot, but CBS News posted a clip to its website and Twitter page that cropped out the footage showing the teen’s alleged firearm.

The CBS News article accompanying the cropped video did not directly acknowledge that Toledo was armed. Instead, the corporate media organization aired opposing claims from Eric Stillman, the law enforcement officer, who said he shot Toledo because he was “faced with a life-threatening and deadly force situation,” and Toledo’s family attorney, who claimed the gun was not in the teen’s hands when Stillman fired off a shot. CBS News did not respond to The Federalist’s request for comment.
While a semiautomatic pistol was recovered at the scene, multiple politicians such as Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot claimed there was “no evidence” the teen fired the weapon before he was shot. Failed Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang tweeted that Toledo was “unarmed” during the incident.

CBS News recently came under fire for deceptively editing out portions of a “60 Minutes” interview with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. While the corporate media organization deliberately left out portions of an interview with the Republican in an attempt to create a scandal surrounding his decision to use a local grocery store chain to administer COVID-19 vaccinations, untouched footage of the interview shows that CBS cut out key facts, such as which pharmacies received the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, when Publix was selected to distribute doses, and which location in Florida had the most seniors.

Also known as DIS-information. The difference between MIS-information and DIS-information is that the former is a mistake; the latter is a willful, deliberate attempt to deceive. I don’t see the media putting out a lot of misinformation. I do see them throwing out a shed load of disinformation. A bigwig at CNN recently admitted to the network being a propaganda machine.
There is clearly no other intent than to make the punk look unarmed and trying to surrender (“Hands Up, Don’t Shoot”) in order to stoke more racial hatred, vilify law enforcement and incite more violence. CBS should have their FCC license revoked.
It called to mind the cropping of the photo of the armed man at a “racist” Trump rally to show he was armed but to hide the fact that he was a black man.
He threw away his gun before raising both of his hands, probably hoping not to be caught with it. It landed behind the fence, 8-10 feet away, where it can be clearly seen at the 5:34 mark in the body cam footage on Vimeo. The officer who fired had less than a second to react in a low light environment. The result was unfortunate, but this wasn’t another George Floyd situation. It’s an inevitable part of what cops are dealing with in a nation flooded with handguns.

The lie—which typically began with some right-wing nobody’s Twitter post—is that CBS intentionally lied; that they deceptively edited the video. Nobody even bothers to question the truth of that statement. In fact, CBS simply showed a short, unedited outtake from the released body cam video that covered the moment leading up to the shooting and the shooting itself. If you look at the embedded timestamp in the top-right of the frame, you’ll see that nothing has been cut out. The gun only becomes apparent the the boys hand in enlarged video freeze-frames provided by the police department. Even in those subsequent enlargements it isn’t entirely clear that it was a gun in his hand. That only seems obvious because it has subsequently been clearly seen behind the fence, where he threw it before putting his hands up. You’re faulting CBS in hindsight after the entire sequence—including the police enlargements—have been put together. It’s the short outtake from the CBS news video presented on Twitter that is an effort to deceive. Here’s how CBS actually reported the shooting, with the entire televised CBS video segment included:

That’s a goddamned lie. Now the true Greg comes out, defending (again) the indefensible. The unedited version shows the gun in the punk’s hand, behind him at an angle. As he turns, he tosses the gun behind the fence, but clearly appears to be turning to fire on the officer (from the officer’s point of view). The CBS edited video show the punk going from running to, apparently, standing with his hands up. Unconscionable. Irresponsible. Despicable. Inciteful. Hateful.

The only place CBS has deceptively altered videos or attempted to incite violence is in the imaginations of the increasingly delusional political right. The reason so many people believe CBS has done so is because numerous articles such as the one at the top of the page have deliberately attempted put that false idea into their heads. They try to distort your understanding of reality exactly as Chauvin’s defense attorney is presently attempting to do to a jury in the courtroom.
The full CBS video MENTIONS the gun. It SHOWS the gun being thrown behind the fence, as seen from the perspective of a different police camera. It QUOTES the family’s lawyer, who ACCURATELY stated the boy had no gun in his raised hands when the officer fired. He didn’t. He had already thrown it behind the fence. The CBS video ALSO noted how quickly everything happened; there was virtually no time for the officer to carefully analyze the situation, as all of the Monday-morning quarterbacks are now doing in retrospect.
This was not a deceptive report. It was a accurate news presentation. What you don’t like is that it’s OBJECTIVE. It wasn’t making a case for either side.
You can blabber on as long as you want, but the two videos compared to each other cannot be disputed. CBS edited out the gun in the punk’s hand. You can also fabricate explanations of WHY they would do such a thing, but there is only one explanation: CBS, like the other leftist media propagandists, serve the Democrat party and what serves them is increasing racial tensions, dividing Americans, vilifying law enforcement and justifying more federal (police state) interference in local law enforcement.
Editing out the gun in the punk’s hand is the OPPOSITE of objective. It is propaganda.
Actually, right-wing propaganda outlets have EDITED YOUR BRAIN. The gun is visible in the boy’s hand for only 2 or 3 video frames that fall between the 1:41 and 1:42 time stamps in the linked CBS news video. It takes luck to stop the CBS video there, as bodycam footage generally runs at a minimum rate of 30 frames per second, but you CAN do it, as I JUST DID, and you will see the identical image that’s in both the enlarged police still image and in the full video released by the PD on Vimeo. NOTHING HAS BEEN EDITED OUT OF THE BRIEF VIDEO SEQUENCE SHOWN BY CBS. It just goes by so quickly that you won’t catch it without freezing on the frame in question.
If you watch the sequence on Vimeo, the same thing happens. To see it, you have to freeze the video and then click on the time bar at 2:04 until you happen to hit the right frame. (02:38:39 on the bodycam timestamp) Watching even at one-half-speed, the frame will go by too quickly for the eye to see it.
The assertion of deceptive CBS editing on Twitter, in the article at the top of the page, and in every site in the right-wing echo chamber that’s repeating it, IS TOTAL, UNMITIGATED BULLSHIT, and that’s a demonstrable FACT.
The CBS video provided is only 50 seconds long, genius. It’s edited. It shows this fine, upstanding young man, studying hard in school, kind to his mother, out shooting guns with his 22 year old mentor at 2:30 in the morning, just turning around with his hands up, not having the pistol in his hand and wheeling around, tossing it behind the fence. It was part of a televised news report. A news report is a brief synopsis of events and issues surrounding them. If CBS had been trying to hide the fact of the pistol, they wouldn’t have mentioned it, nor would they have showed it lying behind the fence and said that it had been thrown there. The police said he had a gun. That’s true. The lawyer said he didn’t when he was shot; that he had his empty hands raised. That is ALSO true. They showed you an UNEDITED video of the end of the chase and the shooting, and of the gun behind the fence. What do you want?
What you WANT is for them to tell the story as you would like it to be told, so that it fully supports what you WANT to believe about the incident, and WANT to believe about boy who was killed. If they did, it wouldn’t be news. It would be political propaganda.
If they are mentioning the gun and reporting he HAD a gun, thus verifying the police version of the event, WHY would they have edited out the part of the video SHOWING the gun in his hand just before he spun around?

For instance, others show the video, stopping just before the punk spun around, showing the gun in his hand, but stopping before the shooting.
As has been explained several times, CBS edited out NOTHING. The gun is visible in his had for only a few video frames of a recording made at a minimum of 30 frames per second. It passes too quickly for the eye to see it, unless the video is viewed at a very low frame rate, or stopped completely on the specific frame in question. Then the gun is visible in the CBS video clip, which begins BEFORE the shot is fired and stops AFTER he has been shot. NOTHING DURING THE INTERVAL IN BETWEEN HAS BEEN EDITED OUT. The segment of body cam video shown in the CBS news video is identical, frame-for-frame, with the same segment in the police department video posted on Vimeo.

You can’t see the gun in his hand in the police video on Vimeo either, unless you freeze at the 2:04 point. That’s at exactly 02:38:39 on the original bodycam footage. Unless you do that, there’s nothing but a motion blur.
This is a fact that anyone can check. Maybe you should do so and see for yourself.

“It appears his hands are empty”. Yeah, because the part of the video that clearly showed the weapon in his hand has been edited out. So has mention of the fact the video clearly showed the weapon.
You can have as many people as you want claim he was disarmed, but the video clearly shows the weapon in his hand. Why didn’t CBS emphasize or even mention that FACT? Because they want to steer the narrative to racial tension and incite violence… because that gives this corrupt administration the opportunity to crush more civil liberties.
CBS “news” should be banned from broadcasting. They are a danger to civil society, inciting racial hatred and violence. Instead of emphasizing the “empty hands” they could have, as others have, shown the frame that clearly shows the weapon in the punk’s hand. Anything else is propaganda, dishonest, corrupt and racist.

It’s not “a claim”. It’s an established FACT. The gun was in his hand until he threw it. It landed 10 feet away, behind the fence. He THEN raised his empty hand above his head, and was shot an instant afterward. CBS EDITED NOTHING OUT OF THAT SEQUENCE OF EVENTS. Jordan Davis of the Federalist is pitching a line of bullshit. Maybe that’s why he’s writing for a propaganda mill like the Federalist rather than for a legitimate news organization like CBS.
Anyone who can’t figure that CBS edited NOTHING out of the segment after closely examining and comparing the relevant frames of the CBS broadcast video and police department video on Vimeo is either blind, deluded, or a liar.
The video on the CBS site cannot be paused. CBS does not show the frame where the gun is visible in the punk’s hand. Other actual news, not Democrat propaganda, sources showed the handgun the officer obviously saw. Further, CBS (and others) focus on the final moment, AFTER the shot was fired, where the punk has his hands up.
The OBVIOUS attempt is to make it look like the officer shot an unarmed black teen, “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot.” CBS is a hate-mongering, race-baiting, violence inciting corrupt, dishonest, lying propaganda tool for the Democrats, who seek out and exploit situations just like this to attack individual rights.

The claim that they “edited it out” is totally bogus.

A media outlet cannot get more irresponsible than this. This is directly and INTENTIONALLY inciting violence, where MORE people get hurt or killed. WHEN will anything be done about the left actively and intentionally stoking racial hatred and inciting violence? WHEN?
