Back in April, a Christian pastor in Calgary, Alberta was shown driving the COVID-19 police out of his church. It seems the police have gotten their revenge, though, as Pastor Artur Pawlowski and his brother, David, were arrested for “inciting or inviting others to attend an illegal public gathering,” also known as a church service.

Such labored word-smithing to try and justify arresting a pastor for having church services reminds me of an incident where I worked. An avionics guy had to work below the floors of an aircraft in the avionics bay and this required him to lay down below the floors. All that is visible are his legs. His boss, who wanted to fire him for a complaint he filed, accused him of sleeping under the floors. When he told him about all the people that had been coming and going from the aircraft, described conversations, the supervisor had to concoct a different charge than sleeping, “Excessive stillness leading to a non-working environment.” Like the accusations against the pastor, this is what vindictively wanting to punish someone without cause looks like.
