It’s calling for people to wake the hell up, see what the hell is happening, and gain a clear understanding why. Yeah, the vandalism is deplorable. The looting is deplorable. Brennan is right about something else, too. Trump is predictably exploiting this in exactly the same fashion that he exploits everything. He has no interest in any sort of unity that isn’t a unity behind himself. As it has always been, it’s the polarization that provides him with most of his political energy. The nation needs conciliatory words, not inflammatory tweets. It’s time for him to rise to the occasion. He’s not doing it.

Brennan made an accurate observation. Some things that have been seriously wrong for decades aren’t going to just go away as a result of wishful thinking. Institutionalized racism is an obvious example. George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery are only the most recent in a long string of recent incidents that have pushed that fact directly into people’s faces.
Your man in the White House either can’t figure that out or doesn’t give a doodly damn, because he hasn’t said or done a thing that addresses the issue. He doesn’t even posture or pretend effectively. He says things that tend to make things worse. A century-and-a-half ago, he and half of his followers would likely have been on the wrong side of the Civil War.
