WEST MIAMI, Fla. — For years, Senator Marco Rubio struggled under the weight of student debt, mortgages and an extra loan against the value of his home totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. But in 2012, financial salvation seemed to have arrived: A publisher paid him $800,000 to write a book about growing up as the son of Cuban immigrants.
In speeches, Mr. Rubio, a Florida Republican, spoke of his prudent plan for using the cash to finally pay off his law school loans, expressing relief that he no longer owed “a lady named Sallie Mae,” as he once called the lender.
But at the same time, he splurged on an extravagant purchase: $80,000 for a luxury speedboat, state records show. At the time, Mr. Rubio confided to a friend that it was a potentially inadvisable outlay that he could not resist. The 24-foot boat, he said, fulfilled a dream.
Among the serious contenders for the presidency, Mr. Rubio stands out for his youth, his meteoric political rise — and for the persistent doubts about his financial management, to the point that Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign flagged the issue when vetting Mr. Rubio as a possible running mate in 2012, interviews show.
The NY Times should be forced to register as an arm of the democrat party.
UPDATE
Financial Expert Quoted in NYT Rubio Hit Job is Obama Donor
A story in Tuesday’s New York Times probing Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R., Fla) “struggles with finances” during his career quotes a financial expert critical of Rubio who donated money to President Obama.
Harold Evensky, a financial adviser “who reviewed Mr. Rubio’s public financial disclosures” at the newspaper’s request, donated $500 to Obama in 2007 according to online records, but the Times does not note that in its piece.
Rubio just threw his hat in the ring, what a month ago? We already know more about his finances and driving record than we do about Obama and he’s been in office over 6 years. Soon we will know what he wears to bed, if he ever lied in grade school, if he ever wet his pants as a 1 year old, how much alcohol he consumed in college, his grades, the topics of the papers he wrote, and the list will go on. If he had a ‘D’ behind his name, there would be charges of being anti-Hispanic.
Rubio is a financial idiot. Doesn’t he know that he should first set up a “foundation”, then sell his governmental influence to “donors”, raking in millions of dollars all while traveling around and living off other “donor’s” nickel? This method is, apparently, above any possible reproach.
Now, that the Times has made Mr. Rubio’s fishing boat a yacht, he can moor it along John Kerry’s collection of yachts. This would be a valuable compare and contrast lesson for those who are confused when buying the right size boat to avoid excessive mooring and taxes.
The NYT is banked y Carlos Slim the Mexican gazillioaire and one of THE richest men on the planet. Slim likes Rubio. likes his amnesty plan, unlike most who post here.
Kerry is old money he would never buy a 500 hp fish boat or a metal flake bass boat
he owns a sloop
even using a single engine Rubio will be hard pressed to troll slower than 7mph
i can’t see that as a fish boat
There’s a White House pic out today of Obama pulling a cigarette out of a pack for his next smoke.
OOPS!
Seems that would be bigger grist considering how two-faced he is about our health.

@john: I guess trolling motors are unheard of on your planet. Let’s see if Rubio paid his taxes on his boat or tried to dodge them like Kerry did.
Perhaps it is worthy to note that unlike liberals in government who become wealthy, Rubio while serving has struggled financially.
@john:
You’ve never been deep sea fishing. It ain’t like a lake.
The ”Occupiers” at the NYTimes all of a sudden are concerned about how a man spends his own money.
Rubio got $800,000 for a book contract.
He spent $80,000 for a fishing boat that he’d always wanted.
All this while he still owed some money on a college loan.
When did the Obama’s pay off their college loans?
After taking money from Resko?
Nope.
They spent that on cocktail parties and dresses, by their own admission.
Not until after Obama’s political career demanded it.
In fact not until he got a book signing deal for $1,900,000 in 2004!
As the Chicago Times pointed out: the Obama’s each carried over $40,000 in loans for their college years for more than 25 years, even as they made great money. http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/7/71/170807/obamas-own-student-loans-42753-for-harvard-law-school
If it is sauce for the goose, it is sauce for the gander.
John, if you go to the web site for the features of Mr. Rubio’s boat you can establish the need for this boat used in salt water. However, as a fan of Great Lakes fishing for Salmon and Steelhead this boat would be a wise choice for these waters.
The problem that arises from this article is that the manufacturer uses the term ,luxury , in the description of this line of boats he is selling. The NY Times uses that word to convey, not the top of the line boat but luxury most people can only dream for.
So, let’s review the perspectives of the left, as reflected in the outrage over Rubio’s boat.
Kerry, as a far left liberal, is a man of the people… one who looks out for “the little guy”. Kerry is wealthy beyond the imagination of most of those “little guys” by virtue of his marriage to a condiment heiress. Kerry votes for every tax hike he can get his hands on, yet when he purchases a new yacht, he makes an attempt to skirt the taxes (HIS, as in taxes he proposes for everyone else) by lying about where the yacht will reside. To liberals, this (in addition to him throwing his fellow swift boatmen under the bus) is what representation is all about.
Meanwhile, Rubio, the son of immigrants who had nothing (married no condiment moguls), went to school, made his own way and has risen to the point of being a Presidential candidate, is representative of the wealthy who trod upon the little guys. Rubio buys a fishing boat (a danged nice one, for sure, but no yacht) and is vilified for it, even though he has paid all his taxes and fees on it, as far as we know (if he hadn’t, we most likely would have heard something of it by now). This is the kind of guy the left just hates.
Does that about sum it up?
This is hilarious.

That is Rubio’s ”luxury home” with the ”in-ground pool and brick-paved driveway.
LOL.
Than, next to it is the pol who can REALLY identify with the common man: Hillary’s house.
LOL.
She’s got a terrific long driveway with huge parking lot, bigger pool, tennis court, putting greens, volleyball court, two (TWO) covered changing areas for sports, and plenty of acreage.
Common man, my foot!
Bill, correct me if I am wrong, didn’t the ” condiment heiress” move the operational center to Ireland to avoid the taxes in the USA.
I hope John looks at Nanny G ‘s post.
