Killed Saturday by an insider attack.

NORTH OGDEN, Utah — The mayor of a Utah city was killed during an attack in Afghanistan while he was serving with the state’s National Guard, authorities said.

North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor died Saturday in an apparent “insider attack” in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

“Devastating news,” Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer J. Cox wrote on his Facebook page. ”“I hate this. I’m struggling for words. I love Mayor Taylor, his amazing wife Jennie and his seven sweet kids. Utah weeps for them today. This war has once again cost us the best blood of a generation. We must rally around his family.”

Taylor, 39, was deployed to Afghanistan in January with the Utah National Guard for what was expected to be a 12-month tour of duty. Taylor, an officer in the National Guard, previously served two tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan.

“Brent was a hero, a patriot, a wonderful father, and a dear friend,” U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said on Twitter. “News of his death in Afghanistan is devastating. My prayers and love are with Jennie and his 7 young children. His service will always be remembered.”

“Right now there is a need for my experience and skills to serve in our nation’s long-lasting war in Afghanistan,” he said. “President Trump has ordered an increase in troops, and part of the new strategy focuses on expanding the capabilities of the Afghan commando units.”

Taylor became mayor of North Ogden, a city of about 17,000 people 46 miles north of Salt Lake City, in 2013.

Zeke Amavisca writes in an FB comment section (where so many people keep speaking from a position of ignorance and insensitivity; and politics):

I personally served with this great man in Iraq. Like me, he volunteered to go to Iraq, just like he volunteered to go on this last deployment. Instead of discussing y we should or should not b there, I would much rather discuss his accomplishments as a soldier, mayor, father, husband, brother and the positive effect he had on me.

And to Zeke’s comment, writes this worm:

Volunteering to go to a foreign country to kill brown people who serve no threat to your own country lol

Excuse me.  Who’s out there killing brown people?  Ephraim Mattos:

“You see ISIS — they’re shooting civilians, little girls, in the back of the head as they’re running toward us,” he said of that rescue. “They’d shoot civilians because they knew we’d run out to get them.”

I represent just one of the hundreds of thousands of conservative white men who have fought to preserve freedom in this great Nation and in other nations. My forefathers are the 3% who founded this Republic against the might of the British Army. It was white Conservative men who died by the tens of thousands after charging into our southern states to free our black brothers from the slavery imposed on them by the Liberal left. We were the ones who acknowledged that women have a right to vote. We held the line in WWI and charged the beaches of Normandy in WWII. We have fought for freedom and liberty for generations and we continue to do so today alongside all of our brothers and sisters regardless of their race or religion.

His last Facebook post:

Freedom: Millions Defy Taliban and Vote in Afghan Elections

“The secret to happiness is freedom… And the secret to freedom is courage.” – Thucydides
“In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

It was beautiful to see over 4 million Afghan men and women brave threats and deadly attacks to vote in Afghanistan’s first parliamentary elections in eight years. The strong turnout, despite the attacks and challenges, was a success for the long-suffering people of Afghanistan and for the cause of human freedom. I am proud of the brave Afghan and US soldiers I serve with. Many American, NATO allies, and Afghan troops have died to make moments like this possible; for example, my dear friend Lieutenant Kefayatullah who was killed fighting the Taliban the day before voting began. 🇦🇫

As the USA gets ready to vote in our own election next week, I hope everyone back home exercises their precious right to vote. And that whether the Republicans or the Democrats win, that we all remember that we have far more as Americans that unites us than divides us. “United we stand, divided we fall.” God Bless America. 🇺🇲👊🏻

RIP Patriot

What good has come from our invasion in ’03? Much bad as shown here!

@Rodney Stanton: A base of operations has been denied al Qaeda so that further attacks on the US from those bases have been stopped. That was the mission and that was accomplished.

God Bless Brent Taylor and his family, as well as all who serve and give the ultimate measure to protect us and the rest of the world.

@Michaelmaigo: This is about a patriot that lost his life. Go ply your wares elsewhere.

Gofundme update:

Jennie Taylor, their two oldest sons, and Brent Taylor’s parents were there as his remains were returned to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware about 2:30 a.m. MST.

“Brent may have died on Afghan soil, but he died for the success of freedom and democracy in both of our countries,” she said in a statement that referred to her husband’s final post on Facebook, which urged Americans to exercise their “precious right to vote.” Tuesday’s press conference was the first time Jennie Taylor has spoken to media since her husband’s death.

“It seems only fitting,” her statement said, that her husband “has come home to U.S. soil in a flag draped casket on our Election Day.”
