Shake Shake Shake! Shake Your Romney! Shake Your Romney!

Thank you Mr. Fehrnstrom for saying out loud and confirming exactly what many conservative new long ago; Mitt Romney is promising to conservatives whatever it is that he thinks they want to hear without any intention of keeping it. The only thing shocking about this revelation is that Eric Fehrnstromn said it out loud, not in a conversation he believed was off the record or private, cut being broadcast by CNN live.

In case you haven’t heard what the kerfuffle is all about , here’s the interview of Mr. Fehrnstrom on CNN and the quote Team Romney is trying to spin away:

JOHN FUGELSANG (CNN): “Is there a concern that [Rick] Santorum and [Newt] Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?”

FEHRNSTROM: “Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch-A-Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all of over again. But I will say, if you look at the exit polling data in Illinois, you’ll see that Mitt Romney is broadly acceptable to most of the factions in the party. You have to do that in order to become the nominee…”

Immediately Team Romney went into damage control and assuming everyone else is either an idiot or will not see the full comment in context has Mitt Romney himself respond with:

“I can tell you this, when the campaign moves to becoming a general election campaign, the nature of the campaign itself in terms of staff, funding, the states we’d go to will be different than today, obviously, It’s a much larger campaign fundraising numbers are very different, we now work with the Republican National Committee instead of apart from any committee of that nature. So organizationally a general election campaign takes on a different profile.”

Anyone who has achieved a reading comprehension level of grade four or higher can clearly see what Fehrnstrom said and what Romney tells you he said are completely different and not only from a different point of view, but a completely different reality constructed for the lone purpose of Romney to hid away in.

Many will say that this is standard operating procedure for candidates in the primary. To that I say that those of us looking for actual change in Washington; yeah we know. And that’s the point. What promise is Romney making to conservatives now that he has no intention of keeping?

Repealing ObamaCare…Shake Shake Shake

Tougher stance on illegal immigration…Shake Shake Shake

Cutting taxes…Shake Shake Shake

Only in the twisted world of Washington D.C. politics is this considered common practice and not, to quote Joe Biden, “a big effing deal”.

If only conservatives could just Shake Shake Shake this primary away and start the Republican primary over with a new blank gray screened Etch-A-Sketch.

I think as a party we are completely screwed. The two front runners for our nomination for president are very, very, very flawed. Yesterday, Santorum said it would be better to reelect Obama than elect Romney. Really? Those comments will make excellent sound bites for the enemy. And, on the other hand, we have Romney. He is nothing more than Obama light. He has absolutely NO fire in his belly. He attacks other Republicans rather than the enemy Obama. When I woke up to Santorum’s comment on Drudge this morning; my heart sank. In my opinion, we are opposing the absolute WORST candidate possible in this election cycle. Republicans should be able to replicate a Reagan landslide nationally, but instead we will probably blow it. Bye bye America, and along with it our freedoms.

Some questions for Mitt Romney from Ayn Rand:

“What is the moral stature of those who are afraid to proclaim that they are the champions of freedom? What is the integrity of those who outdo their enemies in smearing, misrepresenting, spitting at, and apologizing for their own ideal? What is the rationality of those who expect to trick people into freedom, cheat them into justice, fool them into progress, con them into preserving their rights, and, while indoctrinating them with statism, put one over on them and let them wake up in a perfect capitalist society some morning?”

@Mikey: “Santorum said it would be better to reelect Obama than elect Romney.” Well not exactly. What he actually said was:

“You win by giving people a choice,” Santorum said during a campaign stop in Texas. “You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there.”

Santorum added: “If they’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future.”

It’s really a crime how the media and even so-called conservative websites like drudgereport and Powerline are out to destroy Santorum like they did with Gingrich. They’re all painting Santorum as some kind of religious control freak by digging up anecdotal statements he’s made long in the past. As a friend of mine wrote: “The comments he made on birth control that were all over the news a few weeks ago were made in a speech to a church group in 2008. His policy on pornography has been on his website forever, and he only began talking about it last week because the media began asking him to explain that policy. BOTH TIMES media decision-makers dug as deeply as they could in order to find comments made by him on some ‘social issue’ with which they believed the public might not agree in order to consistently hound him to explain those comments — even if they were made four years ago, or have been on his website since long before the primary season. It’s all been a part of a plan to paint him as something he is not. Yes, he has strong religious views, but it is not he who insists on spouting them on the campaign trail.”

Santorum goes out and makes thoughtful and powerful speeches on freedom vs. dependency and all the media talks about are his religious views. It’s curious how we never hear them asking Romney about his religious views – whether Mormonism is a cult or whether he’s wearing his magic underwear tonight. Of course not; They’re saving those questions for the general election. As many have predicted all along, the media and the left want Obama to run against Romney, because he’ll be so easy to take out. Unfortunately, the Republican Elite are walking right into the trap, as usual. We don’t call them the “Stupid Party” for nothing.

This powerful speech was totally ignored: transcript of Santorum’s speech at Gettysburg

Well, a man on the stand he wants my vote
He’s a-runnin’ for office on a ballot note
Preachin’ out there in front of the steeple
Tellin’ me he loves all kinds of people.
He’s eatin’ bagels
He’s eatin’ pizza
He’s eatin’ chitlins.

Politicians will say anything to get elected.

@Mikey, I’m with you. If Romney or Santorum are the only choices Republican primary voters can come up with for their picks, they are headed down that road without me. I’ll either do a write in, or vote none of the above.

Romney – the godfather of the mandate (and still believes in it) – said:

* he would only repeat parts of O’healthcare,
*is an AGW believer,
*says he likes coal but has been on record protesting in front of coal plants,
*stood with Chappaquiddick Ted to block the Cape Wind farm because he didn’t want to hurt the property values of his rich buds there, etc etc.

And that’s only a small cross section sample.

Santorum? Unbelievable meltdown. First it was 24/7 contraceptives. Then he decided to make up imaginary US statehood criteria based on language in Puerto Rico (that worked out well…/sarc). Being that wasn’t enough to show he was an idiot, he followed it up with wanting to start a new war on Internet smut to save the American family, then said the economy wasn’t the issue – that government oppression was (sigh… is that a tacit and ignorant admittance that he believes Obama’s economy is improving??),

…and now this.

My regrets are that this idiot didn’t get his surge time prior to Florida so that he’d have been long gone prior to this moment. He’s a virtual nightmare. Never liked him much from the beginning, but I swear… I tried to give him every benefit of the doubt that he was worthy of a vote in November. Sorry.. I can’t go there now.

@John Cooper, sorry I’m going to have to disagree with you. While I might tend to believe that Santorum doesn’t really believe he’d vote for Obama over Romney in his heart of hearts, you cannot misconstrue the statement:

“If they’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future.”

I’ve been accused here of saying that same thing. I didn’t. What I had said is that both Romney and Obama are totally unacceptable, and that it was like choosing between arsenic in my wine or rat poison in my tea. That lends support for neither.

However Santorum did not say that. He distinctly said that “we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk”. There is no way to misinterpret that he believes Obama’lite is inferior to Obama the original in the choice between the two. Perhaps he has in mind the future of 2016, and Party credibility.. who knows. Or perhaps it’s just another sign of his campaign desperation.

Then again, is that likely a gaffe? Hang yes… I’m sure he wishes he worded it differently at this point. Santorum vs Biden as the most gaffe prone would be a close contest… and that communication flaw is NOT acceptable for the leader of the free world we need at this moment. Seriously, this guy has gone all over the map on every irrelevant issue to voters for the past three weeks – fraught with nonstop verbal gaffes – pushing his social agenda, being vague about the economy (it’s “not the issue…” sigh) and just talking about generic “government oppression”. Specifics plans and proposals are helpful in campaigns.. not talking point slogans of “freedom” and “oppression” which are subjective. I want details, not just “tax cuts” mantras. I want energy details, not just “all of the above” statements.

Santorum has spiraled down into the vortex of stupidity in the span of a few weeks here, JC. If he’s being painted as a religious nut, it’s because that’s the way he’s coming across since the contraceptive issue began. So what if the Internet smut stuff has been on his website and radar for years. *I don’t care!* If he wanted to frame that issue with something all of us could agree with, he should have simply said he would instruct his AG office to enforce all laws on the books. Period. But he needs to wave his social conservative, I-want-to-protect-the-family-thru-government flag.

Instead, even I don’t trust him anymore. The man obviously buckles under pressure, focuses on all the wrong issues, and I’m getting to the point that I can’t watch him and that pasted smile on TV any more than I can Obama.

At this point, I can only hope the conservatives in the states do their parts in getting fiscal conservatives elected to Congress. Unfortunately, the Oval Office is guaranteed to be inhabited by a loser if the choice is Obama, Romney or Santorum… regardless of the “R” or “D” behind their names.

I’d like to say this is like a bad joke, but it’s more akin to a nightmare.

I guess I’m just out of sync with most of America. In 1996 and 2000 I contributed to the campaign of Steve Forbes; In 2008 I contributed to Duncan Hunter; This time around I contributed to Newt Gingrich. Clearly, my interest in a candidate is the kiss of death for them.

Just to be clear, Santorum isn’t my ideal candidate, but I do think that all this hyperventilating over his religious beliefs is manufactured.

You’re absolutely right about congress. People need to stop being distracted by the presidential race and get busy and support freedom-loving candidates at the state, local, and congressional levels.

Well, JC… I must live in that same out of sync neighborhood of America as you. But I don’t think Santorum’s choices of issues to highlight is any indication that it’s manufactured “hyperventilating” when it’s the candidate, himself, choosing to focus on these issues. He did it in AL and MS as well… Newt talked energy policy. Mitt talked about Mitt and his wonderful private business creds over the community organizer in chief. And Santorum railed on about his social issues. He is the product of his own making.

And it seems that he has, again, proven that he’s a whiner, and bears an unattractive resemblance to the already clueless who inhabits the Oval Office – that of never being the one at fault. In his backtracking today, he blames Romney for his tongue stumble.

In his statement, Santorum blamed the criticism he’s getting on the Romney campaign and suggested it is fanning the claim that he would rather vote for Obama. Santorum noted that Romney has sided with Obama on health care mandates, Wall Street bailouts and on “cap-and-trade” legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

If the guy possessed a milligram of common sense, he’d just say that he didn’t word his statement in the best way possible. Not that such a statement would cut him slack from me, mind you. Don’t need a POTUS in this volatile era that babbles, bumbles, and then tries to correct himself. This is just another compounding of Santorum, stuck on stupid.

Like I said, he was ignored as a loser from the beginning, soared on being the last man standing since he was never worth attacking, and has now pretty much self destructed. Romney should have hung on to his money, and just stood back and given Santorum the stage. Waste of cash when Santoroum does the meltdown for free.

I’ll still take Newt. And at this point, the best we can hope for is that Romney doesn’t make the delegate numbers, and that Newt and Paul actually do manage to nudge enough unbound delegates away from either of the two dipsticks at the forefront. I swear, as much as I can’t abide Paul for POTUS because of foreign policy, even he is heads/shoulders above Santorum or Romney at this point. And that’s a downright scary reality.

Mata–

The two of us may be out of sync with the rest of America, but at least we’re in snyc with each other. I don’t even get to vote until May 8th. No doubt the race will all be over by then, as usual. Four years ago everybody in my State hated McCain, but by the time we got to vote, he was the only candidate left standing.

I’m thinking of writing in Sarah Palin as a “last act of defiance”. Remember that cartoon of the mouse flipping the bird to the eagle that’s swooping down on him?

One of the most popular art prints of the times is “The Last Great Act of Defiance,” which depicts a huge eagle swooping down with its razor sharp talons outstretched, and the tiny mouse it is about to snatch up, sitting there calmly, with its middle finger raised in the ultimate, albeit final, act of defiance in the face of certain death.

It would be a huge mistake not to terminate that idiot Fehrnstrom promptly no matter how else you feel.

@drjohn: “It would be a huge mistake not to terminate that idiot Fehrnstrom”. Why? He effectively killed the Santorum campaign. Romney will give him a raise, no doubt.

Great article, Mr. Henkins and I applaud you on the use of the word, “kerfuffle!!”

This is 2008 all over again with one change – Romney is the 2008 McCain.

Stacy McCain defends Santorum:

Santorum didn’t have big money. He didn’t have praise from big-name pundits. He didn’t have the GOP Establishment on his side, and the major media gave him quite nearly zero coverage. But he kept plugging away — “Steady Eddie,” as he said — until he finally broke through.

So he did all that, campaigning for nearly a year, and now that he’s the leading rival to Mr. Inevitable, what kind of coverage does he get? “Gotcha”!

And too many conservatives, who should be defending Santorum against these attacks, are instead playing along with the media “gotcha” game, ready to throw Santorum under the Romney bus.

Let me tell you something: I remember when Charles Johnson tried to throw Pamela Geller under the wheels of his Little Green Bus, and I stood up and said not just no, but hell, no.

Maybe Rick Santorum’s not your favorite candidate. Maybe Pamela Geller’s not your favorite blogger. Maybe Rush Limbaugh’s not your favorite talk-radio host, but conservatives can’t let liberals tell us who our friends are.

Don’t let liberals tell you what to think. Don’t play along with the “gotcha” game. Don’t help them defame people’s reputations.

anyone like HUCKABEE,? HE TALK WELL HE IS CONSERVATIVE, HE IS WELL LIKE
AND NOW WELL KNOWN PUBLICLY, HE IS JOLLY AND PRO LIFE, AND MAKE SENSE AS FAR AS KNOWING POLITIC,
VERY PUBLIC GOOD STANDING PROFILE
HE WAS ASK MANY TIMES AND SAID NO, EXCEPT THE LAST TIME HE SAID; YOU HAVE TO BE ASK FIRST,
AND NOBODY ASK ME YET

@ilovebeeswarzone: I like Huckabee, just not for President of the United States, though.

He is pretty soft on criminals, his clemency rate is pretty high during his time as governor of Arkansas.

As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee had a hand in twice as many pardons and commutations as his three predecessors combined.

The case he’s asked about most concerns the parole of a castrated rapist who later killed a woman.

Although the Republican presidential contender and Southern Baptist preacher plays down any personal involvement in that release, Huckabee granted 1,033 pardons and commutations in his 10 1/2 years as governor of Arkansas. The acts of clemency benefited the stepson of a staff member, murderers who worked at the governor’s mansion, a rock star and inmates who received good words from their pastors.
~~~~~
During his years as governor, Huckabee granted clemency an average of about once every four days. Huckabee’s successor, Mike Beebe, has issued 40 so far this year, fewer than one a week. Bill Clinton, Frank White and Tucker granted 507 clemencies in the 17 1/2 years they served as governor.Source
Don’t get me wrong, he is a good man. He just seems to be too soft on crime.
hi, I see what you mean, and I believe you,
yes, to much is not good , although someone should start to
take care of the mild offense felons who paid their due because they are mark for life
and can’t find work after many years of having paid for their minor offense
and have not done anything against the law after that, those are AMERICANS AND are set up to welfare and treated behind those in jail and even the illegals have a better deal, they are neglected to carry the branding for life and not employed, when you see immigrants get jobs, that should be given
to AMERICAN FIRST, THEY DESERVE MORE COMPASSION THAN REFUGEE GET, MORE COMPASSION THAN any outsider, they should be returned to work and not left in desperate mind set, while the one coming out of jail get all the help to get them back to work,
bye
@ilovebeeswarzone: Yes Beezy, it is a fine line between clemency and helping folks with a hand up and knowing whom to apply each one to.
You can make your own Etch-A-Mitt by saving this image (http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6045/7022877045_97af3707f2.jpg ) and adding what-ever words you like. It even works in MS Paint!
