The portion of the border that is now off limits to Americans stretches along 80 miles of the US border and includes a portion of the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge. The closure has been in place since October 2006, the US Fish and Wildlife Service reported when asked about the closure. They site increased illegal activity by heavily armed illegal alien Mexican nationals as the reason why it is no longer safe for Americans to be in this part of the US.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu told Fox News that violence against law enforcement officers and U.S. citizens has increased in the past four months, further underscoring the need to keep the 80 miles of border land off-limits to Americans.
The refuge had been adversely affected by the increase in drug smugglers, illegal activity and surveillance, which made it dangerous for Americans to visit.
“The situation in this zone has reached a point where continued public use of the area is not prudent,” said refuge manager Mitch Ellis.
“It’s literally out of control,” said Babeu. “We stood with Senator McCain and literally demanded support for 3,000 soldiers to be deployed to Arizona to get this under control and finally secure our border with Mexico. “
U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials have warned visitors in Arizona to beware of heavily armed drug smugglers and human traffickers.
“We need support from the federal government. It’s their job to secure the border and they haven’t done it,” said Babeu. “In fact, President Obama suspended the construction of the fence and it’s just simply outrageous.”
Signs have been posted warning Americans not to cross into the closed off territory south of Interstate 8. Babeu said the signs are not enough – he said Arizona needs more resources to help scale back the violence caused by the drug cartels.
“We need action. It’s shameful that we, as the most powerful nation on Earth, … can’t even secure our own border and protect our own families.”
Perhaps President Obama can tell us how much of the country he plans to turn over to the drug cartels and human smugglers of Mexico to promote good relations with the corrupt Mexican government and Calderon its president. Perhaps we can set aside a national East West and North South Interstate Highways so that our citizenry will be safer from the heavily armed Mexican Nationals conducting their crimes in the US.

Mexico is one big battle of drug cartels and the government is involved as well, which is why it goes no place. Most of the drugs are coming through Grijalva’s district–big hmm. Calderon is said to be on the side of the Sinaloa cartel–maybe because they seem to be winning. When the cops, police, and 7 terror organizations are in an all-out war, our best hope would be keep them all on the other side of the border and let them off each other, but–too late–they are all over, even in CA and northern states, growing weed as well as importing it. As an Arizonan I think there is some confusion here.
First of all, Tucson is a liberal, Democrat stronghold. Don’t be expecting anyone down there to be upset – the Pima sheriff (Tucson’s county) said there isn’t a problem. We don’t need no stinkin’ laws to deal with illegals! I hope no one here is questioning the sheriff’s insight or sanity!!
Secondly, this addresses the closure in 2006:
Swarbrick, the Outdoor Recreations Planner and spokesperson for the Buenos Aires refuge said, “It’s been a long time since I have seen an illegal alien in the refuge.”
Swarbrick added that the refuge indeed used to have problems with drug smugglers when the fencing was only made of barbed wire, but since a 12-foot-high wall was installed in 2006 along the border of the refuge, the area has been quiet.
The closure of 3,500 acres of land in 2006 was mainly for “National Guard and construction workers to patrol the area” without the impediment of the public, said Swarbick. Compared to the 118,000 acres of total area of the refuge, the amount of land closed to the public amounts to only 3 percent of the Buenos Aires Refuge.

Thirdly, the desert area now closed is between Tucson and Casa Grande as opposed to Buenos Aires NWR is way south and out in the boondocks. The area closed this week is very close to Casa Grande – quite a populated area – and ,as I understand it, actually extends up towards Phoenix.
I know warnings were also posted at Saguaro National Park – just outside of Tucson. I’m not sure whether that area is still considered unsafe for Americans.
We travel to Tucson from Phoenix several times a year to “cool off”. The problems being discussed are not “2006” problems. This highlights the astronomical increase in lawlessness, by illegals, caused by the feds not securing the border in Arizona. Arizonans are no longer safe in their homes or on the highways in many parts of the state.
AND Hillary is going to sue Arizona for protecting its own borders.

I know it is tempting to try some old fashioned justice; however I caution you not to engage two well armed enemies simultaneously, the drug runners and the US Law officers. It seems that I can feel the rising level of frustration with our government daily, and the border situation is perhaps a symptom of the greater sickness that our nation presently suffers from. The overarching sickness being non-compliance with our constitution. It is beyond my comprehension as to why neither major political party nor the members of our legislature that in fact passed our immigration laws are unwilling to have them fully enforced… Is it not contempt of congress for the executive to just ignore some laws they don’t like and selectively enforce others they do like? Does that not put the executive, at any level, in violation of their oath of office? After all, are we not a nation of laws? The voters are the only ones that can answer these questions. I hope they will answer them correctly in 2010 and 2012.
By the way, Aleric is spot on. Colorado Mangus never had much of an illegal immigration problem from the south either. His illegal immigration problems came from other directions.
A way to help with this problem is to offer your services and shooting expertise to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Dept. The sheriff may turn you down, but he may also deputize you and put you to work. He’s asking for 3000 armed soldiers that he know Obama won’t supply, so he’s going to have to get help from somewhere. The ranchers also need to form their own security force. Would be legal to protect their own private property. The border is not going to be secured without use of force. Might as well start taking on the task sooner rather than later.

More deputies could be needed in every county although possibly not appreciated as much as in Pinal and Maricopa counties. Seems like a lot of our National Guard is in Afghanistan – Iraq.
