Breaking News: Kosovo declares independence from Serbia

The story is still developing. After 14+ Years of UN/NATO/EU involvement in the Former Yugoslavia, Kosovo has declared independence from Serbia and the region has a great potential for slipping back into civil war.

From a poorly written Yahoo/AP feed

PRISTINA, Kosovo – Kosovo declared itself a nation on Sunday, mounting a historic bid to become an “independent and democratic state” backed by the U.S. and key European allies but bitterly contested by Serbia and Russia.

“Kosovo is a republic — an independent, democratic and sovereign state,” parliament speaker Jakup Krasniqi said as the chamber burst into applause.

Across the capital, Pristina, revelers danced in the streets, fired guns into the air and waved red and black Albanian flags in jubilation at the birth of the world’s newest country.

Serbian President Boris Tadic reacted by saying his country will never accept Kosovo’s “unilateral and illegal” declaration.

Crap. World War I all over again?

Naw, you have to invade Poland to start a world war.

Hmmm … since when did official policy change in which Kosovo would be become an independent nation? The official US policy was to promote Kosovo as an autonomous, self-governing part of Serbia, much like the Kurdish region in Northern Iraq. The UN/EU position was quite different in that they believed Kosovo should be an independent nation.

It was hoped* that the recent election of a non-hardline government in Serbia would prevent Kosovo from doing this. Kosovo may have taken it as a sign of weakness in Serbia knowing the history of the area and being in Bosnia as part of SFOR in 1998 and supporting KFOR in 1999 (nothing much seems to have changed in 10 years).

If Kosovo goes through with this break and civil war ensues, we could see radical jihadist groups move into Kosovo to “protect” the Muslims there. In reality, the only thing they will be “protecting” is themselves and will actually be trying to set up another Taliban like movement there and slaughter everyone (Islamic or not) who stands in their way. Things like Kosovo are for the islamofacists like open trash is to raccoons and cockroaches.

And yes, WWI started here and Hitler meddled in the area in WWII along with his jihadist allies (like the Grand Mufti Al-Husanni).

* Note: “Hope is not a method” is a very common military saying. The EU and UN “hoped” that everything would get better in the region while never actually doing anything to set conditions for improvement.

The “illegal invasion” led by the klintoon’s continues to bear rotten fruit. Wonder if this will once again be the region which will drag the world into a massive eruption of violence. The russians are already screaming foul while President Bush has just recognized Kosovo’s right to independence. My we do live in interesting times. If osama/obama is elected President, wonder who he’ll reach out to and give hugs to? His muslim brethren or the serbians?

I don’t know… maybe some day i declare independence of my state 😛 . That region have a lot of problems, and i think that unilateral judgment is not solution. Everybody have own opinion, but if we forget united nation and give permission to force and violence to leads us …. we are very close to next big war. and i just want to say that Europe have one more muslim state which have a very close connection with other musim countries… we will see next steps…
