NATO has agreed to airlift African Union troops into Sudan’s troubled Darfur region and provide some training, officials said yesterday.
The United States will perform some of the airlifts, a senior U.S. defense official said. The first could come this month or next, said the U.S. official and a NATO diplomat, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity because final details of the plan have not been arranged.
Violence has raged in Darfur for more than a year, mostly between black Africans and ethnic Arab militiamen called Janjaweed aligned with the Sudanese government. The government and Janjaweed have been accused of wide-scale abuses against ethnic Africans in which 180,000 people have died and millions have fled to refugee camps.
The Darfur mission would be NATO’s first in Africa. The African Union ? a 53-member organization that African countries use to address problems on that continent ? asked NATO in April to help bring more African troops into the remote region.
The mission was expected to be discussed today at a meeting of NATO defense ministers, including U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The U.S. official who spoke yesterday is part of Rumsfeld’s party at the meeting.
The alliance’s effort will not include sharing intelligence with the African Union troops, who are being sent into Darfur as observers, the NATO diplomat said. That is because Sudan’s government is wary about intelligence gathering inside the country, the diplomat said.
The NATO training of the African Union troops will include lessons on how best to use information gathered by those troops, the diplomat and Pentagon official said.
At least those getting involved can actually accomplish something. All the UN can do is send child molesters to war zones and take huge bribes from dictators.
You recall the Tsunami that hit Indonesia last December….The US was in the disaster zone within 72 hours, it tood the UN 3 weeks to get up and going and then all they did was clog up the luxury hotels in the area.
Although, Kofi The Idiot believes otherwise:
Kofi Annan: Let me say, the U.N., like all organizations, has some problems. Difficulties that we need to work out. But when you look at the U.N. as a whole, it is an organization of immense importance to every member state in the world.
And recently, you’ve seen situations where the U.N. has had to step in and help work with the international community to get things done. I think the most vivid example is in the question of the tsunami. The U.N. had to lead the humanitarian response. We responded quickly. We organized elections in Iraq, in Afghanistan and the Palestinian territories. These are things only the U.N. can do.
Wow….just wow, this guy has lost it with statements such as these “The UN had to lead the humanitarian response”….guess he doesn’t realize what a fool it makes him look like to everyone other then the moonbats.
Then he says they organized elections in Iraq? They bailed long before the first ballot was filled out because they were scared. They failed to secure their compound and when it got hit they ran like scared schoolchildren.
What a waste this UN is, a complete and utter waste. But it sure did make a few government officials rich huh?
