The death of the global warming ‘pause’ has been greatly exaggerated

Dr. David Whitehouse:

The global warming ‘pause’ never existed, say the headlines. It’s a claim that has been made before, only to be refuted, yet now it’s back again. If there is one topic that sends a small subset of climate scientists’ temperature into the stratosphere, it’s the topic of the global warming ‘pause’ or ‘hiatus’. This is the idea that global surface temperatures haven’t changed much for almost 20 years. Never in my experience of science have I come across a topic like it, and that’s because it means nothing, and everything.

Global warming is about energy imbalance. Greenhouse gasses stop heat leaving the earth, so the planet is getting warmer. This is fundamental physics. Temperature goes up; oceans warm up, expand and sea level rises; pole caps melt. The world has certainly warmed up: 2001 to 2010 was the warmest decade for which we have reliable measurements. Global temperatures are over one degree C above pre-industrial levels and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says most of the temperature rise since the 1950s is due to mankind.

But around 2007 it began to be noticed by so-called sceptics (usually scientists from other fields) that for a few years, global temperatures had not gone up. Perhaps the climate situation was more complicated than was first thought. They were of course lambasted, called deniers for just saying ‘look at this graph’. But the ‘pause’ or ‘hiatus’ or whatever it was called didn’t go away, at least until 2015, when the natural temperature spike that is El Nino started – a Pacific-based emergence of hot water that affects the entire globe for a year or two.

It would be fair to say that most climate scientists think the ‘hiatus’ exists and is a fascinating phenomenon that deserves study. There have been hundreds of research papers about it and over 30 explanations proffered. These range from ones focussed on heat going into the ocean, to ones which focus on the sun, or the stratosphere or even an unknown effect. The hiatus showed the importance of natural climate variability being, possibly for a while, stronger than long-term global warming. But some wouldn’t have it. The ‘pause’ had to be destroyed. That’s fair enough, but they need to make a case.

The latest evidence has just cropped up. The headlines say there is fresh doubt over the so-called global warming ‘hiatus’. This is because a new study suggests that the temperature of the oceans was being underestimated in the past 20 years or so because the ocean buoys used to measure sea temperatures were recording slightly cooler temperatures than the older ship’s intake systems. When taken into account, this new effect makes the oceans warmer in recent years and so obliterates the ‘hiatus’.

Well, not quite.

The climate debate is like how the intelligence debate has become. The left has lied, manipulated and suppressed so much, that it is impossible to trust and believe their position. If global warming were real (which I do not believe is the case), that responsibility for the doubters lies solely with those lying to defend their position.

Nope. A new study has confirmed earlier findings that there never really was any “hiatus.” The hiatus interpretation was bogus.

The global temperature trend, which levels out the peaks and valleys on the graph plot, has continued steadily upward. The rate of planetary warming has been continuous since 1950. Fifteen of the 17 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000. Denial does not alter reality.

It would appear it has been hotter, back when man really was screwing up the environment.

Our planet probably experienced its hottest temperatures in its earliest days, when it was still colliding with other rocky debris (planetesimals) careening around the solar system. The heat of these collisions would have kept Earth molten, with top-of-the-atmosphere temperatures upward of 3,600° Fahrenheit.

Even after those first scorching millennia, however, the planet has sometimes been much warmer than it is now. One of the warmest times was during the geologic period known as the Neoproterozoic, between 600 and 800 million years ago. Another “warm age” is a period geologists call the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, which occurred about 56 million years ago.

Hey here in Northern California it snowed s up to some 15 inches and 10 to 15 feet of snow fell in the Sierra/Nevada Mountians so wheres all that Global Warming/Climate change the al gore said was happening?

How to cut back on all that Hot Air? duct tape the mouth of Gore,Suzuki,DiCaprio,David(Luarie)and those trouble makers from Greenpeace

I’m not sure why this Post (obviously written by a flaming liberal) was made on Flopping Aces, a conservative site. If there is anything true in the entire post, I’d like for someone to point it out. I can’t find anything true in it. The earth is no where nearly as hot as it was before mankind was even on the earth, so clearly man had nothing to do with that ‘global warming’. It has now been revealed that the entire last 100 years of data has been corrupted by the libs that want to make a case for global warming.
Take this quote:

Temperature goes up; oceans warm up, expand and sea level rises; pole caps melt.

total BS. for those that believe that ice melting raises sea levels, try this experiment. I challenged RW to this last week, but for some reason he didn’t report his results. But, fill a glass with ice, then fill it to the brim, exactly, with water. Let it sit there until the ice melts. Tell me if the water ran over the glass or if the water level in the glass dropped. Then, take a container, leave the lid off, fill it to the brim with water, sit it in a freezer and let it freeze. Tell me if all the water stays inside the container, or if the level dropped in the container. Folks, if your real life experience hasn’t worked for you and you think that freezing water ‘shrinks’, then you’d better stay clear of those ocean front property in Arizona sellers or you’ll have some huge payments on your hands. Global temps were higher in the 200 years before the industrial revolution than they have been since, so mankinds manufacturing has not caused an increase in global temps.
Man has to have one helluva sense of importance to believe that anything he can do will overrule what ‘God’ does to the earth. Just let one huge volcano blow andd it totally changes the entire atmosphere for some period of time. If mankind exploded all the atomic bombs in storage in the world, within 50 years there would be no lingering traces. AlGore said the polar bears were becoming extinct. Since he said that, the population has grown from 7000 to over 30,000. The sea levels are where they have been for the last 200 years. Why does anyone listen to this global warming crap. It’s just an attempt by liberals/socialists to control the world.
