Obama, who illegally invaded Libya, lectures Congress on constitutional war powers

Timothy P. Carney:

President Obama, who invaded Libya in 2011 without even asking for congressional approval, took the occasion on Tuesday — in his final 45 days in office — to lecture Washington about constitutional and democratic conduct of war.

“It is important for us to know what it is we are doing, and to have to explain what we are doing to the public,” Obama said at MacDill Air Force base Tuesday afternoon. Obama in March 2011 announced the U.S. intervention in Libya by radio address, over the weekend, from overseas.

“If a threat is serious enough to require the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, then members of Congress should at least have the courage to make clear where they stand … by fulfilling their constitutional duty to authorize the use of force against the threats we face today.”

Again, Obama never asked Congress for authorization to invade Libya.

Libya wasn’t the only war Obama waged without asking Congress first. Throughout his presidency, Obama waged a drone war in Pakistan and Yemen. He claimed authority for this war by citing the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), Congress passed in the days after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, authorizing President Bush’s regime change in Afghanistan.

Obama on Tuesday also said that the U.S. should avoid intervening in foreign countries’ internal affairs, and when the intervention could leave things worse than we found them.

Obama like most all liberals rejects the constitutions limits to powers and beleives their word if absolute law more reasons he need to be exspelled from america for life and even longer

I don’t know how many of his own people Obama brought to that speech to cheer for him, BUT, here’s how our TROOPS responded:

VIDEO: Few troops clap for Obama during final national security speech
31 seconds.
You see over 20 troops, only 4 are clapping.

If I recall correctly, our worse-than useless republican-majority Congress has yet to approve Obama’s formal request for authorization to use military force against ISIS. I suppose we’ll never really know what terrorist events we might have seen inside the United States, had the the Operation Inherent Resolve coalition not been continuously waging war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria for the past two years, in spite of that.

The YouTube NTK “network” is nothing but a compilation of misleading video outtakes. It distributes the sort of brainless video-clip-with-propaganda-caption content that helped set up a clueless reality television host for installation into the White House effective January 20th. What I see is a 3-second video shot of a group of Air Force technicians who look like they’re almost too tired to keep their eyes open. They’re probably night crew.

@Greg: Show me Obama’s request? He was likely laying golf. You are pathetic. All mouth and no proof.

@Randy, #4:

Here’s a link to Obama’s February 11, 2015 letter to Congress, which accompanied his proposed Joint Resolution to authorize the limited use of the United States Armed Forces against ISIS.

CNN covered the event at the time , as did numerous other high profile news outlets, so it’s difficult to understand how anyone could somehow be unaware of it. Congress’s excuse at that point was that they didn’t want to sign off on something that might allow Obama use military forces against ISIS to an excessive degree. Listen to Boehner’s explanation in the video. Apparently they had to keep that Commander in Chief on a short leash, or he’d just go too damn far. That was the story.

They could have debated and reworded the document, of course, but that would have required the spineless weasels to take a firm position of their own, and share in the responsibility for meaningful actions. Hey, they don’t get paid to actually do things that might cost them votes later. That’s way too risky.

Later, their concerns that Obama would act in an excessive fashion turned into accusations that he was never willing to make a military commitment to go after ISIS that went far enough. But they still wouldn’t authorize squat. This is the sort of namby-pamby bullshit the GOP has been engaging in for years. Why you keep voting Congressional idiots a the majority while simultaneously whining about the only person who has actually taken useful action against ISIS in spite of them is beyond my understanding.

@Nanny G:

The military just want this narcissistic asshole gone.

But. . .he hasn’t even been sworn in yet.

The political right does not speak for the military. That doesn’t keep them from pretending they do.

@Greg: ISIS was not the issue when Obama declared war against Libya. Wrong again Greg. Check your time lines.

@Greg: Is that like Obama pretending to act like a president?
