Negative consequences of NY newspaper’s bad journalism continue to mount

Bryan Jacoutot @ Le·gal In·sur·rec·tion:

A couple of weeks ago, a New York based newspaper called the Journal News took it upon themselves to aggregate and publish the names and addresses of all legal gun-permit owners in the region.

The backlash was swift, prompting unified outcries for the paper to take down the locations from their online affiliate site, lohud.com. Critics claimed it would enable criminals to more easily identify the which homes to break in to, putting many residents in serious danger

In response to the public reaction, the Journal News not only said that they would not take down the current list, but would seek to add to it.

The Journal News abdicated responsibility for any wrongdoing in their aggregation of personal information, declaring that it was all available through Freedom of Information requests.

In a previous article, we noted that not all professional journalists share the sentiments of the editors at the Journal news:

I am not a big fan of the maps that show sex offenders, but at least there is a logical reason for posting them …. The permit holders are accused of nothing….

I like it when journalists take heat for an explosive, necessary, courageous investigation that exposes important wrongdoing. There is journalistic purpose and careful decision-making supporting those stories. But The News Journal is taking heat for starting a gunfight just because it could.

Additionally, at the time the original publication began receiving national attention, I stated,

They may not have broken any laws in aggregating the personal information of gun permit owners, but the ethical impropriety of doing so is obvious.

The serious consequences of that ethical impropriety are now showing through, and the public outcry is growing louder.

Law enforcement officials from a New York region where a local paper published a map identifying gun owners say prisoners are using the information to intimidate guards.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco, who spoke at a news conference flanked by other county officials, said the Journal News’ decision to post an online map of names and addresses of handgun owners Dec. 23 has put law enforcement officers in danger.

“They have inmates coming up to them and telling them exactly where they live. That’s not acceptable to me,” Falco said, according to Newsday.

It’s not just law enforcement officials who are in danger.

Now those at the Journal who thought they would intimidate the law abiding citizens who had gun permits for their safety and protection have hired armed guards to guard their offices, although the police department told them that none of the emails the paper received constituted threats. Guess if you object to having your privacy violated by a bunch of ignorant liberals working for a new paper, and you say so in an email, in the editor’s delusional mind, that consitutes a threat.

And some blogger not only revealed the addresses of the editor, and her lackies, but their subscriber list, as well. Seems no one told the editor and employees of that paper that when they go all Saul Alinsky on someone, chances are someone is going to do the same to them.

this political war has been ramping up for a long time. one thing ive noticed all the threats of violence come from the left. all the most vicious verbal attacks come from the left.

one thing im the most tired of is the left equating people with traditional values and firearms owners as evil bad, worthy of death.
also since leftists hold power the rules for radicals from alynsky are a potent weapon against them just as we have seen by the outing of the hoem addresses and phone numbers of employees of the paper.
and if one person is from the pistol permit list is harmed from the action of this paper the editors should get no rest in their own homes day or night.

I think that the Journal has unwittingly demonstrated one of the best arguments against the registering of guns.
Not only will the government know where the guns are, the criminals will as well.
Or was that second sentence redundant?

I won’t be surprised of a rise in shooters with stolen guns from the map.
the idiots journalists made it so easy for them now,
the criminal steel a gun from one side of the street and cross to the other side to rob the one without guns,
easy as that,
now every man and woman will get a gun, and be there to receive the criminal,
he just have to come close to a door or window and get shot,
now it will scare the postman for sure, the pizza man delivering , the door sales man, the young student delivering the news paper, the friend of one son coming as invited by the son,
more of how about a politicien selling himself by door to door visits, and worse FOR HIM OR HER IF he is a DEMOCRATE,
jobs lost

If you see a person with a map around your place or crossing the streets toward you,
he is no tourist, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

Ican picture all the neighbors see the same guy with the map
crossing the street toward their place,
all together out with their gun ready loaded,
and if he happen to be a tourist, oops
negatives consequences

after the NEW YEAR party, this guy decide to listen to reason
and TAKE A TAXI,
the day after, the police come at the door asking what that taxi doing on his parking
