Climate change increases chance of dragons

Be warned. Don’t write this off as the usual exaggerated hype from Nature.

Zoology: Here be dragons

Emerging evidence indicates that dragons can no longer be dismissed as creatures of legend and fantasy, and that anthropogenic effects on the world’s climate may inadvertently be paving the way for the resurgence of these beasts.

Figure 2: The rise and fall and rise again of dragons. The relative frequency of ‘dragons’ in fictional literature (thick red line), as determined as a unigram probability4, with two historical reconstructions of Northern Hemisphere temperature (decadal smoothing) shown in blue5 and purple6. Global temperatures have been measured since 1855 (thick black line5). Temperature anomalies represent deviations from the 1961–90 reference period. The rising incidence of dragons in the literature correlates with rising temperatures, and suggests that these fire-breathing lizards are being sighted more frequently. As a result, the large-scale ‘Third Stir’ is deemed to be imminent.

Ominous signs are there:

Further work has revealed that the early medieval period was a veritable paradise for dragons. This can be attributed to the period’s unusually warm temperatures (Fig. 2) and an abundance of knights, the beasts’ favourite combatant and food. It was also a time when wealth and status were measured in terms of gold and silver — the preferred nesting material for Western dragons.

So dragons forage for knights, and nest in gold and silver. The Nature researchers don’t even mention the rising price of gold and silver nor the volume of trades. Now that’s a hockeystick.

Australia gets the blame again:

CA is attempting to legislate their way out of an historic drought that they blame on GW.
Too bad criminals don’t obey laws.
Pot is CA’s biggest cash crop.
It is water-intensive.
The growers simply steal water.
And they aren’t about to stop.

Are you denying the Dragons in the Bible?
And what about the unicorns mentioned twice in the bible?
Will they return also ?
Gee maybe this really is The End Times
Sure hope I get Raptured

@Nanny G: Nanny why would you choose to believe that pot requires a lot of water?
It is usually grown in arid places like Afhhanistan
Although pot is the largest CASH crop it is minuscule in its water usage compared to rice (in a dessert ?)
Or any of the other central vslue crops
This drought will cause a tremendous loss in land values in the Central Valley. Food prices. Not so much

Nanny a quick Google search. Will show what real growers know about how much water a pit plant needs

I expect this includes Godzilla; I always thought it was nuclear testing that caused that one, never dreamed it was linked to global warming all along.

@Bill: Mothra, too!

From PBS Nova: Lethal Seas

Maybe it will get people’s attention when the term climate change is replaced by climate catastrophe. At some point denial will no longer be possible.

@Greg: Where do you suppose Nova gets its information? From the same sources that have the flawed models and make the same inaccurate predictions?

No one can deny numerous indicators that something is going seriously in the biosphere. (A questionable assumption here is that people are paying enough attention to be aware of the indicators in the first place.) Expanding oceanic dead zones, rising sea water acidity, increasing frequencies of floods and droughts, blighted temperate zone forests, widening permafrost thaws, expanding species extinctions…

Since you don’t seem to like the obvious explanation that the fossil-carbon freeing activities of over 7 billion people can adversely affect the biosphere they inhabit, have you got some other theory?

Basically, the right wants to reject the idea that human activity can in any way affect the global environment, because accepting that proposition means if you’re not completely stupid you’ll need to do something about it. Doing something means figuring out and making changes that could disrupt a lot of money-making activities. Profits could be affected.

We don’t really have to do anything. Balance will be naturally restored at some point, just as it has always been. Not necessarily in a way that favors mankind. The history of life on the planet began long before we appeared on the scene, and will continue long after we’re gone.

How about the PROOF of the lack of warming for 18 years? How about the PROOF of the record amounts polar ice when there is supposed to be NONE? How about the PROOF that polar bears are NOT dying out due to the AWOL warming and are, in fact becoming so abundant that they are on the verge of become dangerous pests? How about the LIES that support AGW?

How about warming on other planets in this solar system, Greg? Human impact? Something the government is not telling us about the space program? Have we been sending Suburbans to other planets?

Who’s stupid, Greg? Those who believe the scam artists, despite every indication that the models and predictions are wrong or those who see the failures of the silly-assed warmists and refuse to abide by the theft of trillions of dollars to fight a phantom threat?

How about looking at evidence outside the of the conservative misinformation bubble?

Probably not. Everything outside of that context is part of the left wing/progressive/liberal/socialist conspiracy.

“Conservatism” is looking more like a cult every day.

@Greg: I believe I just GAVE you the evidence. I recommend you heed it.

Any of this look familiar, Greg? It should, because much of it came from RIGHT HERE. You were too preoccupied with algore’s hand up your butt moving your jaw like a puppet to read and understand them, though. I could go on and on, because I have PAGES of these links for just this purpose, but that would only irritate the intelligent people on these pages and you wouldn’t read them (again), anyway.

@Bill: And yet Evangelicals believe in “The Rapture” Go Figure

This struck me as funny. Opinions, of course, will vary.

Here’s the actual Rick Santorum quote, in the interest of fairness and accuracy: “The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science, and I think that we probably are better off leaving science to the scientists and focusing on what we’re really good at, which is theology and morality.”
