CBS Praises Obama for Post-Sandy Visit, Attacked Bush for Same with Katrina

Warner Todd Huston @ Big Journalism:

CBS News aired a segment full of praise for President Obama’s visit to Staten Island in the wake of Hurricane Sandy Friday. But this positive spin is in stark contrast to the scolding the network gave President Bush when he visited the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

In the report on CBS This Morning, correspondent Elaine Quijano favorably included Obama in her segment on Sandy storm damage showing the President shaking hands with big smiles all around, pledging government support for the victims, and hugging and meeting with individual storm survivors. Mr. Obama was shown as a sympathetic figure ready to help—despite the fact that the area has gone for weeks without as much progress as residents have hoped.

But this favorable treatment for Obama stands in stark contrast to the attacks CBS leveled against President Bush when he went to visit storm-ravaged areas after 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

In 2005, CBS ravaged President Bush for holding a press conference in an air-conditioned tent as victims went without and pointedly said that residents wanted Bush to “wake up and smell the coffee.”

CBS’s Harry Smith even wondered if religious folks that came to help might become unbearable Bible thumpers forcing poor victims to “go to church.”

Bush went for publicity, while obama went out of concern for the people. Or, was it the other way around? How can you tell any more?

To expect anything other than butt-smoching of Obama from CBS is silly. They are completely in the tank. Since Rather got caught using forged documents against Bush in ’04…through their “coverage” of Sandy…CBS, much like NBC had one goal…to elect Democrats.

BTW…reports continue to come in of massive voting fraud in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and now Illinois. There were huge turnouts of ballots in some major cities, but not a huge turnout of voters. That’s how that works. See Drudge.

We lived through Katrina and find it sad that our public servants haven’t learned any lessons from it. Obama visits the beach, Christy kisses his arse, and the Press proclaims peace on Earth. Obama is Obama, a narcissist glory grabbing liberal. Tough times bring out the true character in people…Chris Christy and Bloomberg are inept self serving politicians. FEMA is still a massive federal boondoggle.

@Sid:

I remember being on the beach road in Gulfport, Mississippi right after Katrina hit. The homes resembled what you see in photographs of Dresden, Germany after the bombings. We parked and walked down the road and there was Shepard Smith, filming a report for Fox News. The cameras were focused strictly on Smith as we saw on the news later than night. Smith was whining how there was no help for his fellow Mississippians and how the federal government (read, Bush) was failing them. There was just one problem with that story; as the cameras filmed Smith in close up, there were military trucks just a short block away, unloading aid to those Americans who had just lost everything. There were temporary tents for medical treatment, eating, handing out needed items, sleeping, etc. The Red Cross and Salvation Army were on the scene, and volunteers from all across the MidWest and South were pouring in, like us, in their self contained motor homes, ready to do what it took to make life a little easier for those so harmed by a natural disaster. What Shepard Smith was reporting was a flat out lie. I don’t think I will ever forget that. To this day, I cannot watch him.

But I realize that Louisiana was a different story, entirely. While Mississippi leaders, especially Haley Barbour, had their act together, Kathleen Blanco and Rag Nagin were making a political statement at the expense of those harmed.

What happened after Katrina was not President Bush’s fault. Every state files an emergency plan with FEMA, signed by both the state and the federal government. It says clearly that local/state first responders are responsible for the first 72 hours emergency management. Haley Barbour declared Mississippi a “disaster” state prior to Katrina’s land fall. Kathleen Blanco did not.

Yet, here we are, with CNN singing the praises of Obama while Staten Island is still unacceptable, even this late after the storm. But that is Obama’s way. Remember the horrible ice storms that blanketed the entire midwest that winter after Obama took office? Kentuckians were without electricity, and no FEMA help, for weeks. When Texas was on fire, and one county lost almost 1,700 homes, not to mention barns, businesses, livestock, FEMA showed up ten days later. The FEMA help? Two people with an EZup tent to take names of who had insurance and who did not. No help. Just two people handing out the FEMA 1-800 number. Fourteen months later, some of those who lost their homes to that fire have yet to hear back from FEMA after repeated calls. But that will never be reported.

Since Rather got caught using forged documents against Bush in ’04….

Rather is still working for them, just in a different area. They figured he had the right idea, it just didn’t work, since whoever forged the documents used a Microsoft font. People wrote out the document line for line and character for character, put one on top of the other, held it up to a bright light, and they matched EXACTLY. The word processor hadn’t been invented when Bush’s papers were filled out.

The propaganda media didn’t learn from their mistake. They used a word processor to fake obama’s birth certificate. Anybody with an open mind can see that it wasn’t written with a typewriter. Why haven’t the republicans gone after obama on his fake birth certificate, him using someone else’s Social Security number, and even his fake Selective Service registration card? I read or heard that he doesn’t drive. That makes sense. I think Illinois is a state that doesn’t give illegals drivers licenses, so obama can’t get one, even though he can be president. Only in America!

You conservatives should ask your conservative politicians why they WANT obama in office, since they could have him removed from the white house and moved into Gitmo any time they want. Why don’t they? All three of my federal reps are republican, and none of them are doing anything. I have written them several times on the issue. I will do it again now that obama gets another four years if they don’t stop him. It will only take one politician to start an investigation into our Illegal-And-Chief.

There were huge turnouts of ballots in some major cities, but not a huge turnout of voters.

One Ohio county gave obama 108 percent of the vote. How many times have we heard, “You need to give 110 percent”? Ohio came close.
