Caution: you are now entering the gun-free and sanity-free zone.

MOTUS @ Michelle Obama’s Mirror:

Yesterday was a very sad day for our country.

MOTUS, like every other citizen, is heartbroken. Our betters have already rushed to their microphones, soap boxes and pulpits to ask why we don’t have the kind of gun control they have in Norway.

Those of us who have somehow managed to maintain our wits about us in this bizarre culture ask a different question: why are so many obviously insane people allowed to move about so freely in society? Why is it that, although there have always been guns, there haven’t always been the number of mass murders we’re experiencing as of late?

Is it the number of guns? Societal breakdown? Our culture of violence? Hollywood? While there’s probably a kernel of truth in all the usual suspects, a more likely culprit may be the policy implemented by our betters which determined that mental institutions were horror chambers that inhumanely incarcerated people simply because they didn’t conform to the standards society determined to be normal (how judgmental).

As is often the case with good intentions, the “deinstitutional movement,” initiated in 1964 and fully implemented in the 1970’s, the “solution” did not fix the root problem. There are still  just as many crazy people in society, only now they live amongst us free to act out their psychotic fantasies: unless and until they confess or get caught.

Although  the mainstreaming of psychotics had been afoot since the passing of theCommunity Mental Health Act the final nail in the coffin that stopped the institutionalization of the crazies was a Ken Kesey movie (One Flew Over he Cuckoo’s Nest) which advanced the theory that the inmates were actually saner than their keepers. Hence, we should either let the inmates dictate the terms of their own incarceration or simply close the asylum and set the patients free.

If letting lunatics run the asylum is the new norm, we’re good to go:

Since the novel was written by a man who did his “research” under the influence of LSD and peyote buttons it is unclear why his conclusions would hold any credibility among the sane. Except for the fact that his story’s basic premise – that people in mental institutions are not “crazy” they’re just far more “individualized” and therefore superior to the rest of us mere mortals – fit the liberal’s agenda du jour of mainstreaming all butt the (convicted)criminally insane.

This is the post modern society that the left has lead us to. We can not have a winner in a youth sporting event. Our school rooms are integrated to the point where our teachers must teach to the lowest common denominator. Pur legislators pass bills that require lending institutions to provide loans to those who they know can not repay them because “everyone” deserve to own a home.” We take money from those who work and distribute it to those who won’t. This is the world the post modernists left us. This is progressive?

@Randy:

This is progressive?

It is, but one always should ask, “progress to where?” For our society, where liberal/progressives are now running the show, it seems as if the progress is towards statism. Whether it’s socialism, communism, fascism, or any other “-ism”, it’s all about an all powerful central government controlling as much of our lives as they can get away with.

Reality check for the left:

Flashback: Tough Gun Control Laws Failed To Prevent German School Slaughter of 2009

Economists John Lott and William Landes conducted a groundbreaking study in 1999, and found that a common theme of mass shootings is that they occur in places where guns are banned.

The Aurora shooter, who killed twelve people earlier this year, had a choice of seven movie theaters that were showing the Batman movie he was obsessed with.
All were within a 20-minute drive of his home.
The Cinemark Theater the killer ultimately chose wasn’t the closest, but it was the only one that posted signs saying it banned concealed handguns carried by law-abiding individuals.
All of the other theaters allowed the approximately 4 percent of Colorado adults who have a concealed-handgun permit to enter with their weapons.

In our neighborhood there USED to be signs near each public school: “Gun Free Zone.”
After the gangs nearly took over our local GRAMMAR school (to force little kids to be their runners and holders of drugs and guns) parents and concerned adults took to the streets as ”Madres Unida,” (Mothers United).
We used walkie-talies (decades ago, before cell phones) and kept within eye contact of one another, forming a human chain between where the children walked from up to the school gates.
This worked.
The gang retreated.
Later the sign came down.
Everyone concluded it had been counterproductive.
Uncertainty is a well known smart tactic in warfare.
Telling your enemy when you are leaving is idiotic, as we are seeing in Afghanistan.
Keeping him guessing is far better for all concerned.

@Nan G:

One thing is being missed by people who either claim that teachers “packing heat” would have prevented the tragedy, or those that deny that it would have.

Just the thought that there may be armed resistance is often enough of a deterrent to prevent such unimaginable crimes from occurring at certain places. This is an aspect that many people are missing. Not that there should be guns allowed, or shouldn’t be guns allowed, but that there shouldn’t be signs pointing like neon to the places where unarmed victims are gathered.

@johngalt: Exactly what the uncertainty principle is all about, JohnGalt.
