Partial transcript:

There have been a lot of good ideas as to how to get this money into people’s hands quickly. Some have suggested, for example, that we drop it by airplane. But that leaves something to be desired. Some people will have bigger rakes than others. It won’t be distributed equitably. My favorite stimulus idea is to give everybody who needs a job a shovel. We put half the people to work digging holes. We’ll get the other half to fill em up. Everybody gets a check and the unemployment problem is solved. And theres no limit to the number of holes we can get Americans to dig and fill.

~~~
and now to the gentlemen at my last lecture who said that this sounded like telling a fat guy that the way to lose weight is to eat more donuts…I can only say that there are cleary some among us who still don’t quite understand the sophistication of the economy.
~~~

So this Holiday season be extra nice to the kids. Bless there hearts they have no idea whats in store for them. But, of course thats there problem. Our job…your job, this holiday season, is to follow the lead of our government. Spend more than you can afford. More than you can ever possibly pay back. “Ask not what your country can spend for you … ask what you can spend for your country.”

Classic Fred!

To go along with Wordsmiths post below comes the news that Fred Thompson may be considering a challenge for the RNC chair:

“I’m extremely excited that he’s considering it,” said Scooter Clippard, a Middle Tennessee businessman who spearheaded national fundraising for the Thompson and McCain campaigns. “It’s time for a change. Fred Thompson would be the absolute best person to articulate that message for the party.”

Thompson’s appeal, his supporters say, is that he has no future presidential ambitions for himself — only for his party. The former actor is also an able communicator — once famously described as a “southern-fried Reagan” — in a party sorely in need of a new message and a new direction.

“The party’s going to be looking for a messenger. Here’s a guy who’s looking toward the future of the country, not looking to pad his resume,” former Thompson campaign staffer Bob Davis of Nashville said…

Thompson has not said anything about the RNC chairmanship publicly, but the prospect has his supporters intrigued. Even former Republican presidential nominee John McCain is in on the speculation.

Wow! Michael Steele or Fred Thompson…..now that is going to be one difficult choice to make.

While I love Steele, I would have to side with Fred on this one. To see him on TV and radio as the voice of the Republican party would be fantastic.

Fred talks for over 12 minutes on what a Obama presidency will do to this nation…well worth the time to watch the whole thing:

Man o’ man I wish this guy was our candidate.

Select quotes:

Senator Obama and his campaign see a historic opportunity, a political opportunity. They know that in times of fear and uncertainty the promise of a safe haven is well received. But there is no sanctuary in what they offer. Their haven is the same tired old refuge of liberalism. The federal government. And the candidate, the least experienced, the most liberal in two generations, represents the last gasp of imposing the failed 1960’s radical leftist agenda that could never succeed in normal times.

Now let me make it as plain as I know how. Senator Obama is elected President with a Democrat majority in both the House and Senate, this country will make a dramatic shift to the left such as we have never seen before. Senator Obama and the Democrat congress will be unrestrained, and unrepentant at making our country, as never before, more divided, more dependent, on a dramatically larger and intrusive federal government.

Another good quote:

Are we really expected to believe that the spending needs of the most liberal government in American history in control of all three branches will be satisfied by only raising revenue on the top 5% of American taxpayers?

I think we’ve heard this tune before. Back when Bill Clinton campaigned on a middle-class taxcut and when elected imposed a middle-class tax increase.

Here’s Fred speaking to bloggers earlier today (Skye has her own report here). Hopefully video of his speech at the RNC will be up soon:

Meanwhile Allah at Hot Air did a great job of succinctly laying out all that the left has found out about Sarah Palin in their Palinsanity:

Why on earth would McCain dump her? What does the media have to show for all these breathless scandals they’ve dug up? We found out her daughter’s pregnant, but McCain probably knew about that in advance; in any case, the base has rallied around her in the aftermath and independents are unlikely to care two months down the road. We found out she was once a member of the Alaska Independence Party — except that, er, she wasn’t, and as Smith notes, it’s not nearly as fringe a party as one might think. We found out Todd Palin had a DUI back when Wham! was still together. We found out she flip-flopped on the bridge to nowhere, which would sting if not for the fact that she flip-flopped in the right direction and ended up torpedoing it. We found out she requested earmarks as mayor of Wasilla in the fine tradition of The One, who also claims to stand for “Change.” We found out she hopes God approves of what our soldiers are doing overseas. And as to the one big story that’s cooking, Troopergate, we found out nothing: She has a private lawyer now and the Democrat in charge of the investigation is trying hard to make Republicans panic, but like the Bristol Palin news, this is one thing McCain probably did vet thoroughly given the stakes.

Addon: Gerard Bakers breakdown of the accomplishment comparison between he who would be President and she who would be Vice President bears repeating:

Political experience

Obama: Worked his way to the top by cultivating, pandering to and stroking the most powerful interest groups in the all-pervasive Chicago political machine, ensuring his views were aligned with the power brokers there.

Palin: Worked her way to the top by challenging, attacking and actively undermining the Republican party establishment in her native Alaska. She ran against incumbent Republicans as a candidate willing and able to clean the Augean Stables of her state’s government.

Political Biography

Obama: A classic, if unusually talented, greasy-pole climber. Held a succession of jobs that constitute the standard route to the top in his party’s internal politics: “community organizer”, law professor, state senator.

Palin: A woman with a wide range of interests in a well-variegated life. Held a succession of jobs – sports journalist, commercial fisherwoman, state oil and gas commissioner, before entering local politics. A resume that suggests something other than burning political ambition from the cradle but rather the sort of experience that enables her to understand the concerns of most Americans..

Political history

Obama: Elected to statewide office only after a disastrous first run for a congressional seat and after his Republican opponent was exposed in a sexual scandal. Won seat eventually in contest against a candidate who didn’t even live in the state.

Palin: Elected to statewide office by challenging a long-serving Republican incumbent governor despite intense opposition from the party.

Appeal

Obama: A very attractive speaker whose celebrity has been compared to that of Britney Spears and who sends thrills up Chris Matthews’ leg

Palin: A very attractive woman, much better-looking than Britney Spears who speaks rather well too. She sends thrills up the leg of Rush Limbaugh (and me).

Executive experience

Obama: Makes executive decisions every day that affect the lives of his campaign staff and a vast crowd of traveling journalists

Palin: Makes executive decisions every day that affect the lives of 500,000 people in her state, and that impact crucial issues of national economic interest such as the supply and cost of energy to the United States.

Religious influences

Obama: Regards people who “cling” to religion and guns as “bitter” . Spent 20 years being mentored and led spiritually by a man who proclaimed “God damn America” from his pulpit. Mysteriously, this mentor completely disappeared from public sight about four months ago.

Palin: Head of her high school Fellowship of Christian Athletes and for many years a member of the Assemblies of God congregation whose preachers have never been known to accuse the United States of deliberately spreading the AIDS virus. They remain in full public sight and can be seen every Sunday in churches across Alaska. A proud gun owner who has been known to cling only to the carcasses of dead caribou felled by her own aim.

Record of bipartisan achievement

Obama: Speaks movingly of the bipartisanship needed to end the destructive politics of “Red America” and “Blue America”, but votes in the Senate as a down-the-line Democrat, with one of the most liberal voting records in congress.

Palin: Ridiculed by liberals such as John Kerry as a crazed, barely human, Dick Cheney-type conservative but worked wit Democrats in the state legislature to secure landmark anti-corruption legislation.

Former state Rep. Ethan Berkowitz – a Democrat – said. “Gov. Palin has made her name fighting corruption within her own party, and I was honored when she stepped across party lines and asked me to co-author her ethics white paper.”

On Human Life

Obama: Devoutly pro-choice. Voted against a bill in the Illinois state senate that would have required doctors to save the lives of babies who survived abortion procedures. The implication of this position is that babies born prematurely during abortions would be left alone, unnourished and unmedicated, until they died.

Palin: Devoutly pro-life. Exercised the choice proclaimed by liberals to bring to full term a baby that had been diagnosed in utero with Down Syndrome.

Fred Thompson smacks this one out of the park:

Upon reading the opinion in Boumediene v Bush, one must conclude that the majority knew where they wanted to go and simply had to figure out how to get there. The trip was not a pretty one. How could it be when the justices seemingly wrote a map based on ideas cherry picked from over 400 years of established law and backfilled with justifications to create a new right for alien combatants that Americans themselves do not enjoy?

They could have saved us all a lot of time if they’d told us what was clearly on their minds.

They don’t trust military tribunals to deal with those accused of being enemy combatants, even if the tribunals are following guidelines established by Congress.

That the government has probably detained some prisoners at Guantanamo for longer than they should have.

And that Guantanamo should just be closed.

Though they are willing to give it lip service, they don’t really believe we are at war … at least not a “real” war.

Therefore, they should create a new right for our nation’s enemies commiserate with the displeasure that they and the rest of the “enlightened” people have with this “war,” Guantanamo and the Bush Administration.

At least this approach would have been an honest one and based upon about as much legal justification as the approach they took.

But, instead – as Justice Scalia pointed out in his dissent – they for the first time in our nation’s history, conferred a Constitutional right of habeas corpus on alien enemies detained abroad by our military forces in the course of an ongoing war – a broader right than has been given to our own citizens. The court majority did so acknowledging that they could find no precedent to confer such a right to alien enemies not within sovereign U.S. territory

The majority had simply decided that prior courts had denied such rulings based on “practical considerations.” In other words in prior cases and prior wars it had just been too inconvenient to bestow the right of habeas corpus upon non-citizens in foreign jurisdictions.

And whats amazing is that this court somehow can see into the future. You see, we will never have a war like those in the past where tens of thousands of combatants may be taken prisoner. It would still be mighty inconvenient to give those tens of thousands the right of habeas corpus….but alas, according to the majority, this is exactly what will be bestowed upon them.

But Fred doesn’t stop there….stand by to stand by:

In reading the majority opinion I am struck by the utter waste that is involved here. No, not the waste of military resources and human life, although such a result is tragically obvious. I refer to the waste of all those years these justices spent in law school studying how adherence to legal precedent is the bedrock of the rule of law, when it turns out, all they really needed was a Pew poll, a subscription to the New York Times, and the latest edition of “How to Make War for Dummies.”

Ouch!

And so true.

Man, he would of been some kind of President…but c’est la vie.

I’ve said this in the past over and over again. I don’t agree with McCain on many issues, but on the courts and the war I believe he will be true to the conservative cause. This ruling just shows how important it is to put a conservative justice on SCOTUS.

Plus Fred Thompson endorsed McCain since he has all but wrapped up the nomination.

Fred Thompson, the one-time Republican presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. John McCain Friday, calling on the party to “close ranks” behind the presumed nominee.

“This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,” Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.

Thompson’s endorsement was expected. The two men were colleagues for years in the Senate and shared what associates called a friendship. But while he was in the race, Thompson had bristled at the idea that he was going to drop out and endorse McCain.

I do find it quite humorous tho that the media, such as Michael Shear above, and many bloggers are saying this was all to be expected. Which I find ludicrous. If that were so Fred would of done this when he dropped out.

But he didn’t.

He waited until the nominee was chosen, and make no mistake, the nominee has been chosen. If Mitt had won, his endorsement would of went that way.

He understands that this fight is too important for petty bickering and will back any of the Republicans who win the nomination. Just one more reason why I respect the man so.

An interesting article written by Steven Stark today in which he muses that the GOP may very well be headed to a brokered convention if McCain loses Florida:

If McCain loses in Florida, the Republicans may well be headed to a deadlocked race and convention. And history teaches us that the likeliest candidate to emerge in that scenario is someone like Warren G. Harding: the prototypical, less-than-stellar candidate to which conventions turn when the going gets rough.

This year’s Harding? Believe it or not (are you sitting down?), despite the fact that he’s withdrawn from the race, is Fred Thompson.

He goes into the history of Harding, who was supposedly chosen in a back room to be the nominee after some lackluster showing in the earlier states:

In Montana, Harding challenged the front-runners and finished fifth with less than three percent of the vote, and then withdrew from New Jersey because he was already running out of money. He barely held his own state of Ohio as a favorite son. In neighboring Indiana — deemed a must-win by Harding because he had the support of both senators — he failed to win a single county and finished a very weak fourth.

In fact, Harding’s showings were so atrocious that he had to be continually convinced not to drop out of the race by his advisors. Sound familiar?

But as the convention approached and no one was near the number required for nomination, Harding had two huge advantages over the other candidates, even though they had proven themselves far bigger vote getters. He looked and sounded like a president. And, much more important, no one disliked him nor had any strong reason to oppose him.

That, in fact, is the key to winning a race that deadlocks. And, this year, it is Thompson’s ace in the hole.

Think about it: the GOP establishment is scared to death of Huckabee, the outsider who has the allegiance of the evangelicals. The only way he’s going to get nominated is if he can win a majority of delegates in the primaries. Ditto for Giuliani: his personal life, social liberalism, and New York background make it unlikely that he can win the GOP nomination any other way than through the primaries (which, unless he can win Florida, is a long shot).

McCain? The GOP establishment and mainstream Republican voters have never really trusted this maverick, either, given his sponsorship of the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance legislation, his friendship with Democrats such as John Kerry, and his current stance on immigration. McCain can win over a few stray delegates committed elsewhere. But unless he’s close to a majority as the convention approaches, he’s unlikely to be the acceptable second choice of most delegates.

Romney? Parts of the GOP establishment (i.e., the National Review crowd and Rush Limbaugh) like him, but he has the highest negatives of any candidate in the race. Evangelicals don’t trust him, perhaps unfairly. And the other candidates can’t stand him, which, if a deadlock should occur, will hardly leave him the likely beneficiary of any efforts they might make on someone else’s behalf.

That leaves Fred.

Steven argues that he has always been the establishments choice, and I agree. While its fun to speculate about a brokered convention, I doubt it will come to pass.

But for us Fredheads who understand the man was the only true conservative in the race it sure is nice to dream.

It’s official: GOP Presidential candidate Fred Thompson withdraws from the race!

Fred Thompson introduces his grandson at a visit to Mike’s America in October, 2007. Mike’s America photo.

It’s hard to put so much of yourself into a campaign and a candidate even if you never met the man. We invest our hopes and dreams in a candidate and when he withdraws, or worse yet, loses, it’s painful.

But that’s the reality of the game called politics. I remember that the first vote I cast for President was for Gerald Ford in 1976 and Carter won. But four years later, I voted for Ronald Reagan and he won. Three years after that, I was a paid staffer on the Senate campaign of conservative founder John Ashbrook when he died suddenly before the Ohio primary.

Politics can be a wild ride from victory to defeat. And certainly, Fred Head friends today can permit themselves a brief moment of disappointment and sadness.

But the game is never over and the best way to overcome the sting of defeat is to get back out there and WIN!

I know that many of you are less enthusiastic about second choices. But each of those choices is better than the Democrat alternative. Not only CAN we win in 2008, we MUST win. There is just too much at stake for the long term future of our nation than to sit and watch Democrats destroy our economy, undermine national security and discard traditional American values.

Fred’s departure from the race means that the conservative vote which was split in South Carolina allowing John McCain to win, will now be much more focused as the Florida primary looms on Tuesday, January 29th.

Rest, regroup and come back to the game as soon as you can my friends. We need you! We need ALL of you!

I spoke to one of my Thompson sources.

He’s still with his ailing mother. “He’s just being a good son.”

He has not spoken to any other campaign or any other candidates, nor does he intend to at this time.

He will not endorse, I am told by this source close to Thompson.

I am also told, “he has no interest in a vice presidency or a cabinet position.” At an “appropriate time” he will outline his plans for the near future.

This source believes that the race has demonstrated that whatever happens from here on out, the GOP has to stand for consistent conservative policies across the board.

At one point, I asked this source if the attitude was, ‘if you can’t be Reagan, be Goldwater,’ and the source responded, “exactly.”

If I were a betting man, I would bet on him departing the race in the not-too-distant future.

Many who have been betting the man would endorse McCain most likely have some egg on their faces now, and the whole Carl Cameron, Fox News, “he has been after a VP slot all along” meme was wrong also.

Fox News wrong once more. Shocker.

Sad, sad news but we all knew it was coming with his third place finish in SC. Now we all have to pull up our bootstraps and work to defeat Hillary/Obama at all costs.

UPDATE – 1131hrs PST

From Fred:

McLean, VA – Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:

“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.

Sad news.

Some updated info on Fred tonight. The MSM has been reporting all day that Fred was skipping the debate Thursday in Florida and was on his way to dropping out. Some nimrod, cough Carl Cameron at Fox (Fox! shocker there huh?) cough, even wrote that he has been looking for a VP slot all along.

Fred Thompson sources say the actor and former Tenn senator may withdraw from the race. There are no plans to attend Thursday’s Florida debate.

Staffers have been on partial pay since the NH primary. The Senators plans are very fluid. As of 8:45 this evening, there are no plans for any announcement about whether he will stay in the race or not. The team is wrestling with very few options. The Senator is in Nashville visiting his mother (in her 90’s) who has been ill.

From THE FIRST DAY Fox News broke the story last March of his candidacy, Thompson has always had a vice presidential bid in mind. Today a top aide even mentioned the idea on Brian and the Judge on Fox News Radio.

But tonight comes news that his mother is quite ill and wonder of wonders, he is NOT skipping the debate, yet:

Fred’s mother is ill and her condition has deteriorated today. I ask that everyone and the candidates give the family space to make their own decisions about the process, and respect whatever his wishes may be.

UPDATE at 9:00 pm: To clear up some rumors floating around, just got word from the campaign:
1. Thompson has not pulled out of Florida’s debate Thursday night yet. Fox News is wrong in their reporting yet again, at this stage.
2. Yes, she has been ill for a while, but has improved since earlier today.

Cameron and the folks at Fox who so want Fred out may get there wish, but not today at least. Myself, I don’t believe he will be taking a VP slot if he does leave the race but that doesn’t stop Fox from running the rumor.

As I said earlier, I’m praying he stays in.

Also, please take a moment and sign the petition to keep Fred in the race.

Lastly you have to read this excellent post by Charles at Lifelike Pundits:

Wahhh, Fred isn’t doing well! Wahhh, Rush may not support the GOP nominee!!! Wahhh, I’ll sit the election out and teach the GOP something! Wahhh, we can’t get a good candidate! Wahhh!

CUT THE CRAP.

We are Americans. We do not succeed by whining, we succeed by doing. We do. We accomplish. We succeed.

We aren’t happy enough with the current group? WE MAKE THEM BETTER! We lean on them, and we push them to be better. Push Rudy and Mitt for who specifically they will nominate to the Supreme Court. Lean on McCain for exactly what he’ll do about the border. Demand from the people running for Congress for exact specifics about what they’ll do to keep you happy! And I don’t mean handouts, I mean they had better damn well apologize for everything that cost them the House and Senate and 2006 and they had better promise that they’ll shape up!

YOU WILL NOT MAKE THE COUNTRY BETTER BY GRIPING. YOU WILL MAKE THE COUNTRY BETTER BY GETTING UP AND GETTING INVOLVED.

I wanted Fred, you can see it in my old posts. Well, Fred isn’t happening. What do you want me to do, stick my head in the sand and cry like a little bitch? No! I plan to make Romney or Rudy earn my vote! I plan to write very clear letters, make phone calls to radio stations, and push, shove, kick, and shelp whoever wants the GOP nod to the right.

GET OFF YOUR ASS AND DO SOMETHING.

~~~
You think Reagan would have ever advocated crap like “The case for sitting out 2008”?
Not on your life.
Great message at the right time.
Mike Huckabee stole Fred’s thunder in the early primaries. On Saturday in SC, Fred got his revenge!
One candidate stood between Mike Huckabee and victory in Saturday’s GOP Presidential Primary in South Carolina: Fred Thompson. McCain won the primary with 33% of the vote to Huckabee’s 30% (results).
Looking at the SC exit polls, it’s clear that McCain didn’t win conservatives. 69% of South Carolina voters identified themselves as conservatives and their vote went to Huckabee: 35%, McCain 26% and Thompson 19% and Romney 16%.
35% of conservatives went for both Thompson and Romney, denying Huckabee a win and further underscoring the very large number of conservatives who will vote for anybody but Huckabee and McCain.
Those who attend church weekly or more often made up 64% of the GOP vote. Huckabee took 41% of that vote and McCain only 27%. But it was Thompson who cut into Huckabee’s weekly church going base at 15%, 2 more points than Romney at 13%. Enough votes right there to bring the overall total close to a tie between McCain and Huckabee.
[Note: McCain got 50% of those who never attend church].
Fred’s Late Surge Undeniable Factor
In the three days prior to Saturday’s election 16% of the exit poll sample made up their mind. Of those, 29% voted for Huckabee, 35% for McCain, 22% for Thompson, and 11% for Romney. That surge, more than any other factor blunted any momentum Huckabee had.
Of course the beneficiary here was the John McCain, whose natural base was much stronger with self described liberals, moderates and Independents.. One McCain supporter declared: “Thank God For Fred Thompson.”
What Next for Fred?
Reports are that Fred has returned to Tennessee to visit with his ailing mother and consider his options. The word is that he still retains some funds which could help him mount campaigns in other states, but it is doubtful he has enough to compete in larger states like Florida.
Fred’s vote also splits Romney’s strength which continues to benefit John McCain in states like Florida.
Huckabee is said to be planning on a resurgence in the heartland arc of Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee. If Huckabee won all of those (and they are almost all winner-take-all states), he would take home a surprisingly large 308 delegates. Would Thompson voters continue to stick with him, splitting the anti-McCain anti-Huckabee vote with Romney knowing Fred is very unlikely to win? Again, doubtful.
The Bottom Line: Stop McCain ?
At some point, voters who find McCain and Huckabee unacceptable will have to coalesce around a single candidate to block either of those from continuing to exploit their respective strengths and capture the nomination. Mitt Romney holds an advantage over Fred in that he has already won a number of contests, holds the highest number of delegates and has all the money he needs to mount a campaign.
We should know soon what Fred’s intentions are. Also, the Florida GOP primary is a week from Tuesday on January 29th. Currently, Rudy and Mitt are slightly below McCain’s average in Florida polls. Hopefully, the overall picture will become clearer after Florida as we move into Super Tuesday.
Ok, been some hours away from the tube and away from the puter to cool off and think about Fred’s third place finish. For those of you living under a rock he came away with close to 70,000 votes, 16%. Huckabee had about 130,000 and 30% and the winner McCain close to 145,000 votes and 33%.
If I was going to talk to Fred one on one I would make the case to him that he needs to stay in. I would tell him how much pride and admiration I have for his convictions and positions. I am proud I supported you during your hard fought campaign, and make no bones about it, you have campaigned your heart out.
Going from one townhall to the next while the MSM either completely ignored you or snidely remarked about your age and silly hats. Misinformed voters, who pay little attention to politics until the day they have to vote, sucked it all in and here you are at 3rd. But you passed up Romney and came in a respectable third.
I would ask you to stick around at least until February 4th, if not longer. McCain will NOT take the south, it just won’t happen. If you don’t win you may just gather enough delegates to have a say on who the nominee will be if it comes down to that brokered convention. Just maybe.
Yes, probably daydreaming. Maybe not even smart. But I will be damned if I let the only real conservative out of this bunch just fade away because the pundits demand it.
But if you do decide to bow out then I will move on from trying to get the best conservative the nomination to ensuring a Hillary or Obama doesn’t get into the White House. No matter who the nominee is on the Republican side is. Yes, even a McCain.
A McCain who eight years ago went off on the religious right as intolerant but now has suddenly seen the light enough to garner many of their votes in South Carolina. (and we call Romney a flip-flopper)
While I will not campaign nor support any other Republican candidate during this primary if Fred drops out, once it’s over and the nominee has been chosen then the gloves come off and its time to make sure two of the most dangerous liberals out there do not become President of the United States.
You gotta love Fred, here he is talking about his method of dealing with earmarks and activist judges (you know, those who would ensure the Constitution really was a “living, breathing document”)
Man: (Pause) I’m looking for a tall man who will stand tall for America. (Pause.) Who will cut the ears off of earmarks! (Pause.) Stop dead illegal immigration! (Pause.) And pull the teeth of activist judges…
Thompson: Yep.
Man: … who take your house to build 7-Eleven! (Pause, then louder) And I want to know if you’ve got a Jim Bowie knife and a good strong pair (pause) of Channellock pliers! (Laughter, even more applause, calls of “That’s right!” and “Hear, hear!”)
Something tells me Mitt Romney doesn’t field a whole lot of questions like that.
Thompson, for his part, answered with Southern-fried aplomb. “Did you ever see the movie ‘Walking Tall’?” he said, referring to the 1973 action flick about Buford Pusser, a Tennessee sheriff who single-handedly rid his town of crime and corruption. “You know the ax handle that old Buford used to carry? I got me one of them. I knew Buford Pusser. His daughter gave me one of those ax handles and I still got it. I thought about it many, many times. There’s a lot you can do with that.”
As SeeDubya noted, Sheriff Pusser was also not a favorite of the establishment. Just as Fred seems to be with the likes of Hugh Hewitt and the always faithful FredHater Allahpundit. They say he has no chance of winning so don’t waste your vote. They say a vote for this guy lets this guy win and we all don’t want that.
So in effect they want those who support Fred, in the single most important state for their candidate to win, to vote for another candidate because Romney is better then McCain? Are you kidding me? A flip-flopper or a Amnesty supporter. They are both bad choices for our party and I will not buy into this mania, and mania it is. Myself, I will vote FOR a candidate, not AGAINST one.
My favorite comment left at Hot Air in some time:
I can see some people here advocate abandoning conservative principles to vote for the prettiest pony.
Well you asked the question, here is my answer.
F*%k No! Eat a bag of sh*t, since when do we, as conservatives, endorse the American Idol style of picking a candidate.
One has nice hair. He seems nice. He promised me a new water heater for my house. I will vote for him even though he flips and flops depending on the crowd in front of him.
The other tells jokes and is soooo Christ like even though he lives just on the outskirts of the truth. What a nice boy.
This guy is a war hero, I guess I can conveniently forget he never misses a chance to dog his own party. Lets vote for him.
Wasn’t there a guy from New York running too? I should vote for him, he gets the NE mindset.
What!! He refused to put on a fire hat!! That rat bastard I will never vote for him, besides he got in too late! Oh nevermind he espouses core conservative principles, the media tells me I should hate him anyways.
The GOP is truly pathetic.
If you live in South Carolina go out and vote FOR the candidate you want to be the next President. I don’t care who it is (but hope it’s Fred), don’t waste your vote as a tactic AGAINST a candidate.
