New York University’s esteemed journalism school nominated it as one of the decade’s top 80 works of journalism. It’s about the death of a young lieutenant in Iraq, and the resulting effects on his family, his community, and the author. The lieutenant’s name was Mark Daily, a 2005 graduate of U.C.L.A., and he was my friend.
