Happy World War II Day

Posted by: Scott @ 4:51 am in Georgian War, NATO

On this date in 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The attack was done because Germany claimed Poland had attacked one of its radio stations-that was its official reason. Unofficially, it was a bit more complex. Prior to the invasion, Britain and France had promised that if Germany invaded Poland, it would be an act of war on an ally (kinda like a pre-NATO alliance). When the border was crossed, the war was automatic. A few days later, Russia invaded Eastern Poland as well (at the time, Russia and Germany were quasi-allies after having signed a Non-Aggression Pact which promised they wouldn’t go to war with each other. What is the supreme lesson of this day in history? There are several. Let’s ask Winston Churchill.

There was no moment in these sixteen years when the three former allies, or even Britain and France with their associates in Europe, could not in the name of the League of Nations and under its moral and international shield have controlled by mere effort of the will of armed strength of Germany.

Some of my friends follow politics closely. Most do not. The Obama campaign has done an absolutely wonderful job of presenting and repeating the message of CHANGE with Senator Obama’s candidacy, but the problem comes when Americans (Democrat, Republican, Independent? No…AMERICANS) see that message of CHANGE, and they ask, “So, what’s he gonna change?”

It’s 3am.
The phone rings.
It’s the red phone.
Russian military forces have invaded a place called South Ossetia in support of Abkhazani seperatists
Georgian military forces that have recently returned home after fighting side by side with American troops in Iraq are racing to the front, but most have been overwhelmed.
Villages are being burned
Men and boys are being seperated out, forced to watch their wives and sisters be raped before they themselves are executed
America and NATO allies told Georgian officials that they’d come to Georgia’s aid if attacked
Who will pick it up the phone?
Who will answer it?
The Democratic Congress’ leadership is on recess and busy with book tours
The DNC is confused after having just published a platform that promises to support Georgia
The Democratic Party base that was so fervently anti-war for years is silently refusing to recognize let alone oppose the atrocities
Senator Obama is on vacation in Hawaii

Senator McCain, however, saw this coming, and has led the pack in calls for international diplomacy, condemnation, and resolve. He’s sent his friends as envoys to the American ally, and he’s been monitoring the situation closely.

Who will pick up the phone? That’s irrelevant because John McCain was already on it-even at 3am.

….Um, anyone from the RNC looking for an ad writer the answer is YES, I am available.

Surely he must have meant REDEPLOYMENT instead of “running away.”

“The border has been along this river for 1,000 years,” separatist official Ruslan Kishmaria told AP on Wednesday. He said Georgia would have to accept the new border and taunted the departed Georgian forces by saying they had received “American training in running away.”

question: Does this mean that “redeployment” is not a deterrent to invasion and other forms of Aggression?
