The Daily Distraction

Today’s Distraction brought to you by The Moscow Cat Theater.

Roll the tape:

Today’s Distraction: The Gloucestershire Cheese Roll.

This event looks like fun….and a great way to break a leg, or arm, or two.

Last Monday, May 25th, the annual Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake was held near Gloucester, England. In a tradition that dates back at least 200 years, possibly much longer, groups of fearless competitors chase an 8 pound (3.5 kg) round of Double Gloucester Cheese down an extremely steep and uneven hill, with a 1:1 gradient in some parts. Thousands of spectators gather to watch the five downhill and four uphill races, and to celebrate the winners and console the losers afterward. Injuries such as broken bones and concussions are commonplace, but the event continues to grow in popularity. The winner of each race is awarded the delicious round of cheese they were chasing.

President Barack Obama talks with Judge Sonia Sotomayor after announcing her as his choice to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice David Souter, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, May 26, 2009. Obama nominated Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday, selecting a woman who would be the court’s first Latino. Obama’s choice of the liberal Sotomayor, a 54-year-old judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, was unlikely to change the ideological balance of the high court because Souter, 69, was part of the panel’s liberal wing.

McAfee did a study on what search terms constitutes the most dangerous on the web:

Those searching for Obama are four times more likely to get infected with a virus than those searching for viagra (6.2% vs 1.6% risk)!

I make no secrets about watching WWE (more so in 2000-2003, than now); nor about my being a fan of Chris Jericho. He’s the reason I got hooked in the first place. He portrayed himself very charismatically in 2000-2002, understands the nature of the business, delivers good matches and knows how to connect to the audience on the mic.

These days, Chris Irvine (his real last name) portrays himself as a heel (bad guy). If he seems arrogant and pompous in interviews, much of it is “kayfabe” and an act (he is, after all, an entertainer, where the character and the person behind the character sometimes has the line blurred).

I don’t know what Chris Jericho’s politics are (I posted his interview in 2007 during a WWE Christmas tour in Iraq; also, a post in 2008), but many WWE wrestlers do seem to lean either conservative Republican voters or libertarian.

Here he is in a TMZ bit. I found it a bit entertaining. Might be scripted; but I wouldn’t be surprised if the line was spontaneous as well as his own. If you’ve seen him in other interviews, he’s naturally funny and articulate.

At 1:30, he’s asked if Obama has better abs than he has:

Today’s Daily Distraction brought to you by a rejected, but funny, Wendy’s commercial.

Roll the tape:

A good news story of the ugly duckling who sings like a swan!

You may have already heard the Cinderella story of the 47 year old Scottish spinster who always wanted to be a singer. She got her wish on the British show Britain’s Got Talent.

Video of her performance and background is here.

It’s a feel good story that ranks right up there or surpasses the cell phone salesman Paul Potts who sang opera (here).

Proof that extraordinary, good things can happen to ordinary people!
