I entirely disagree with the message this journalist is trying to express through this caricature and I find it offensive to Marines and the Corps.
However, I am equally disgusted by those who say this journalist can print this drawing thanks to the Marines and for this reason he shouldn’t do it.
I agree Marines and all service members of the armed forces do a great job at protecting the freedom of Americans and they deserve respect for this, but I believe what they do is honorable because they DEFEND everyone’s freedom.
When you say he can’t have the freedom to criticize the Marine Corps because without Marines he would not have freedom of expression, you are saying that Marines GRANT him the PRIVILEGE of freedom, as if it was in their power to decide who gets freedom and who doesn’t.
If Marines could indeed make this decision, they would be no better than the tyrants they fought. Marines, their actions and their battles are honorable because they generously give freedom to everyone, including the freedom to criticize them.
Tolerating criticism, even when undeserved, is part of what makes Marines great. It’s also the essence of a democracy.
On the other hand, tyranny and oppression grow and feed on censorship
So disagree with what this journalist has to say if you like, but don’t deny him the freedom to express his opinion, because if you do then you are a tyrant yourself and you insult the Marine Corps.

I served with non-American Marines: they were some of the best men I have ever known.
Some people may hate our armed services, but they need to be reminded that without them, even during times of relative peace, there would be no United States. Capitulation and appeasement only works until the bully figures out that you are a cowardly piece of crap that would sell his own mother to breathe for a few more minutes. At that point he will walk into your picnic and take everything he wants. Sort of like the capitulation efforts to appease the International Socialists and the National Socialists before WW II. You certainly have the right to express that opinion. Do you know who fought to give you that right? Do you know who fought to keep that right? Would you rather have been under British rule, where outspoken disagreement was prosecuted? How about German rule under Hitler, where you would have been lined up and shot for it? How about USSR rule where the people who speak out against the government or military were put in the Gulag?
It is one thing to discuss the particular incident itself. It is quite another to lump all of the military in with the bad apples. The cartoonist certainly has the right to draw what he did, as the papers have the right to print it. What they should have been asking themselves is: Should they have done it? Just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean you necessarily should. The cartoonist did the same as you. He took the actions of a few and demeaned the entire Marine Corps.
Do us a favor. On the next Veteran’s day, or Memorial day, or Fourth of July, don’t celebrate it. It’s obvious that you dislike the people those holidays are meant to honor, so why celebrate them. Believe me, you won’t be missed.

I often think of them and how they are now checking in their war gear on a regular basis.
