The New Iraqi Parliament

One step closer to Democracy for Iraq:

Parliament approved Iraq’s new national unity government on Saturday, achieving a goal the United States hopes will reduce widespread violence so that American forces can eventually go home.

[…]In a show of hands, the 275-member parliament approved each of the 39 Cabinet ministers proposed by incoming Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Al-Maliki and his new Shiite, Sunni Arab and Kurdish ministers then took their oaths of office during the nationally televised session in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

That completed a democratic process that began following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

In his first address, al-Maliki told parliament that he would make restoring stability and security the top priority of his new administration. He said he would “work fast” to improve and coordinate Iraqi forces so they can reduce attacks by insurgent groups and militias.

Captain’s Quarters describes the incredible feat the Iraqi people accomplished today:

Considering that and the religious and ethnic tensions that exist in Iraq, along with the bitterness of the past few decades under Saddam Hussein’s brutal rule, the marvel is that it only took three years to get to this stage. After Washington beat Cornwallis at Yorktown, it took an ethnically and religiously monolithic populace over seven years to agree on a permanent form of government, during which they got it wrong once. In contrast, the Iraqi people marched to polling stations under dangerous conditions not once but three times within a year in order to create the temporary government that drew up their charter, to approve it, and then to elect representatives to form the permanent government.

From a historical perspective, that is quite impressive.

Not that the MSM will report it as such. They will instead report any deaths and violence while writing about the fact that the new parliment hasn’t made Iraq safe yet. Just look at some of the headlines:
