They haven’t done much of anything lately but monkey-wrenching the machinery of government and shoveling sand into the gears. Back from their month-long paid vacation, they may soon turn their attention to causing another enormously expensive government shutdown. I’ve pretty much had it with their party’s childishness and ineffectiveness, and I’ve most certainly had my fill of their tantrums.
I’d probably vote for Sanders before anyone the GOP appears ready to offer. I’d certainly vote for Sanders before considering Donald Trump. Sanders has a long history of philosophical integrity and steadiness on positions. I know what he cares most about and appreciate his candor. Trump in the Oval Office would be like spinning the Wheel of Fortune on every issue.

In the current (not just any) case, our US President is all too happy to be a “maker of laws”, by using his “pen and a phone” to push through whatever he likes. Examples not limited totally to but inclusive of, his Executive Order on Illegal Immigrant Amnesty, the parliamentary tricks necessary to pass and then his appallingly unconstitutional rewrite of the ACA, his executive but by no means binding upon any succeeding administration nuclear weapons development “deal” with the mullahs of Iran he has proven to be just what you say he can’t.
Worse yet is your stupid characterization as to what the legislature is constitutionally empowered to do. Given that the legislature is first of all a co-equal branch of the government, in a system the framers referred to as “checks and balances”, they are constitutionally enabled to “shovel sand into the gears”. The house is heavily opposition party controlled and the Senate by a slim majority, and the”Monkey-Wrenching the machinery of government” is what “We the People”duly elected them to do.
If the President expects the legislature to sign on to his vision, he must do a better job of leading. Like actually showing some leadership. The reaction of FOX News has been interesting. I think it might be slowly dawning on them that they have created their own Frankenstein monster, and it’s gone totally out of control. Their effort to put it down in the first Republican Debate backfired. It only got stronger. Now it’s stalking the countryside, stomping on former republican hopefuls like bugs.

As far as being articulate, that is a prerequisite for a politician. Ethical in that he has not been censured or charged with anything is a low bar to clear, but it seems he has. Perhaps he has been position-consistent, but being consistently wrong does not make him a candidate most people would support.

He’s may not be running unopposed, but he’s certainly trampling the opposition. Can the GOP bring him down? It’s going to require an organized assist from conservative media. Even if they manage it, it won’t be like a hard reboot of the system. They won’t be able to return to a pre-Trump state. There’s also danger that a too-obvious setup may backfire again, solidifying support for a third party effort.
@Greg: Rumors of the opposition’s death are greatly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mark Twain. Trump may have a healthy lead now, but the national convention is still roughly a year away.
A lot can happen in that window. Trump may polish his skills, another candidate may present a challenge through the debate cycle, or Trump may simply flame out. Far too early to predict which of these, or any one of myriad other scenarios, might occur.
Again you make baseless assertions regarding the follow-on ramifications of Trump. He’s leading in polls right now, but the notion that he has irretrievably transmogrified the GOP into something from which they’ll never recover seems quite overheated.
He has tapped into a deep disaffection many in the voting populace seem to feel. He is articulating the frustrations of many people who are opposed to the agenda of the current administration, (and of a subsequent administration that seems likely to drift even further left). The RNC should be taking note of this, as any candidate who desires a successful run will need to be cognizant of this attitude.
For Trump, I think his bombastic delivery and thin-skinned, petulant lashing out at any reporter who fails to pay him sufficient homage will be his undoing. I don’t think his presence taints the pool for any other candidates, and I think he’ll sink fast enough that a third party run will be such an obviously losing proposition his ego will not allow him to continue.
