Barack Obama is warning America of the devastation that the sequester will visit upon the country, including
Furloughs of 800,000 civilian Pentagon employees;
Meat inspector furloughs from which food shortages will result;
Air Traffic Controller furloughs resulting in three-hour waits at airports to clear security;
Reductions in embassy protection and border patrols;
Cutting the Persian Gulf Naval presence from two aircraft carriers to one;
Diminished emergency services;
fewer police and firefighters on the streets;
Reduced military readiness;
Criminals going free because federal prosecutors will have to close cases;
Thousands of teacher and educator layoffs
Tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find child care for their kids;
Hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose access to primary care and preventive care like flu vaccinations and cancer screenings; and
Job-creating investments in education and energy and medical research.
And soon we’re likely to hear that global warming will accelerate and comets will strike the Earth if Republicans don’t acquiesce to Obama’s demands for more taxes. He has hinted that planes will fall from the sky:
“Air traffic controllers and airport security will see cutbacks, which means more delays at airports across the country,” Obama continued. “Thousands of teachers and educators will be laid off. Tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find child care for their kids. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose access to primary care and preventive care like flu vaccinations and cancer screenings.”
How much is to be “cut”? $85 billion on a budget of $3.6 trillion. That’s 2.4%. As of August household income was down 8.2% under Obama and the country had to make do. Now Obama tries to tell us that government can’t do with 2.4% less? Seriously?
He has been lying about the sequester since the debates. The sequester was Obama’s team’s idea:

At 2:30 p.m., [White House Budget director Jack] Lew and [White House legislative affairs director Rob] Nabors went to the Senate to meet with [Senator Majority Leader Harry] Reid and his chief of staff, David Krone.
“We have an idea for a trigger,” Lew said.
“What’s the idea,” Reid asked skeptically.
“Sequestration.”
Reid bent down and put his head between his knees, almost as if he was going to throw up or was having a heart attack. He sat back up and looked at the ceiling. “A couple of weeks ago,” he said, “my staff said to me that there is one more possible” enforcement mechanism: sequestration. He said he told them, “Get the hell out of here. That’s insane. The White House surely will come up with a plan that will save the day. And you come to me with sequestration?”
Well, it could work, Lew and Nabors explained.
What would the impact be?
They would design it so that half the threatened cuts would be from the Defense Department….The idea was to make all of the threatened cuts so unthinkable and onerous that the supercommittee [tasked with making additional cuts] would do its work and come up with its own deficit reduction plan.
Lew and Nabors went through a laundry list of programs that would face cuts.
“This is ridiculous,” Reid said.
That’s the beauty of a sequester, they said, it’s so ridiculous that no one ever wants it to happen. It was the bomb that no one wanted to drop. It actually would be an action-forcing event.
“I get it,” Reid said finally.
Short version: Once tax increases were off the table, the White House staff came up with a sequestration plan that only had spending cuts and sold Harry Reid on the idea.
And since then, Obama continues to double down on the threats of damage the sequester will cause.
President Barack Obama issued a stark warning on Saturday that the looming sequestration budget cuts will have a devastating impact on the American economy and even threaten national security.
Obama used his weekly address to make a blunt and pointed speech, pinning the blame for the situation squarely at the doors of Republicans in Congress, whom he said were refusing to compromise on the issue of taxing the wealthy and so scuppering any chance of a deal to avoid potential disaster.
“[The cuts] will slow our economy. They will eliminate good jobs. They will leave many families who are already stretched to the limit scrambling to figure out what to do,” Obama said.
Cuts to defence and social programmes totalling $85bn are set to hit almost every part of the US government, from national parks to the military to schools and the transportation system. They were put in place after 2011’s row over raising the budget ceiling, in an attempt to force lawmakers to find a less onerous ways to reduce deficits and stabilize the national debt. Both sides failed to find an alternative, however, leaving the cuts to kick in at the end of next week.
Obama has said over and over that that Republicans are to blame for their refusal to “compromise” on raising more taxes.
But Republicans did agree to a tax increase of $600 billion.
WASHINGTON — The Senate, in a predawn vote two hours after the deadline passed to avert automatic tax increases, overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday that would allow tax rates to rise only on affluent Americans while temporarily suspending sweeping, across-the-board spending cuts.
Back in 2011 Obama and John Boehner had a grand bargain in hand when Obama reneged on the deal and demanded more in tax increases than the $800 billion to which Boehner agreed.
Mr. Boehner tells Mr. Woodward, “He was spewing coals.” This is what Mr. Boehner said he told the president: “I’d put revenue on there if we had real changes in entitlement programs. Every time we get there, you and I agree; all of a sudden you guys keep backing up, backing up, backing up. And now you call me and you want more revenue. It ain’t going to happen. I’m done with it.”
And we learn from Bob Woodward that once again Obama reneges on another done deal:
In fact, the final deal reached between Vice President Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in 2011 included an agreement that there would be no tax increases in the sequester in exchange for what the president was insisting on: an agreement that the nation’s debt ceiling would be increased for 18 months, so Obama would not have to go through another such negotiation in 2012, when he was running for reelection.
So when the president asks that a substitute for the sequester include not just spending cuts but also new revenue, he is moving the goal posts. His call for a balanced approach is reasonable, and he makes a strong case that those in the top income brackets could and should pay more. But that was not the deal he made.
For all the tough talk, Obama is afraid. He is afraid that the sequester will come to pass and no one will notice. He is frightened to death that America will learn that the government can do with 2.4% less, because then America will begin to wonder with just how much less government can do.

Second to None, an aerospace industry website, cites a recent study that concludes sequestration will put 2.14 million American jobs at risk. Bear in mind that the aerospace industry would be particularly hard hit, and so has a particular interest in seeing sequestration avoided.
Macroeconomic Advisers, a group of independent economic consultants, expects more modest damage. They project that sequestration will result in the loss of 700,000 American jobs by the end of 2014. So says The Wall Street Journal’s Market Watch. You can find the details of their projections here.
I don’t know what specific results republican lawmakers are projecting, because they haven’t really said. Most suggest the consequences won’t be that big of a deal. The more outspoken–Rand Paul, for example–thinks nothing particularly worrisome will result, and that the mandated cuts aren’t anywhere near deep enough.
I guess we’re going to find out who is correct. My own thought is that adding drag to a recovery that’s far too slow already is very unlikely to have a positive effect on any of our debt or deficit problems. Nor is it going to be in any way helpful to the average American.
The entire point of the sequestration compromise was to avoid immediate damage to a struggling recovery–something that failure to raise the debt ceiling would almost certainly have caused–while simultaneously posing such an unacceptable set of future consequences that Congress would be compelled to find common ground to avoid them. Congress accomplished nothing, and that future is about to arrive.
I don’t hear anything about green energy programs or renewables research money being halted. The DHS has a $50 billion budget, nobody would notice if they got shut down for a month or two.

Cutting 85 billion from a 3600 billion dollar budget still leaves 3515 billion. The false hysteria of Obama and his acolytes is disgusting. We are talking about a 2.36% budget cut. To follow the insanity of Obama’s Keynesian economic ideology (which was done in the 2 previous failed stimulus spending sprees) will do far more damage to the economy than this paltry sequestration cut.
The democrats pushed this set of cuts, putting 50% of those cuts on the DoD in a putrid political blackmail attempt to force republicans to give in for more assinine taxes. Frankly, what Obama has done qualifies as treason. He devised this and is now laughably blaming republicans for putting the economy in jeopardy?
Which party is responsible for failing to meet the constitutional requirement to produce a federal budget for the last 4 years?
Which party has almost doubled the national debt in just 5 years with irresponsible profligate spending that has done nothing but worsen our economic situation, kept us at an average 8% unemployment rate (using only U+3 and ignoring those folks who have been unemployed for >6 months)?
Which party has run the economic policies that have led to our national credit rating being downgraded?
So you have to ask yourself, if all these democrats have managed to make themselves so personally rich, how could they be so economically stupid at the national level? Cut the funding for National endowment for the Arts, Sesame Street and friends, and cancel all those worthless green energy subsidies, shut down fannie mae and freddie mac and get out of the student loan business…too many folks are graduating with a college degree in “Whatever” Studies and can’t get a job, let them do a few Co-op semesters if they really think College is that important.
It would be possible to cut huge amounts from the Federal budget just by eliminating conflicting or unnecessary directions from the various bureaucracies like NLRB, EPA, HHS, and a dozen others.
That would not tank the economy, it would be stimulus the likes of which have not been seen in years, especially if made permanent.

Does anyone else find it strange that obama’s way to reduce spending is to fire WORKING people, but not to fire the WELFARE RECIPIENTS? If he really was trying to HELP the country, wouldn’t he be REDUCING the amount of people on welfare, instead of actively ADVERTISING for people to get on welfare? Wouldn’t he be REDUCING the amount he is asking congress to spend, instead of asking it to spend MORE THAN THEY DID LAST YEAR?
He wants to spend more than we did last year. When he says he is cutting spending, he means he is reducing the amount of the INCREASE he is asking for. Millions of people out of work, or with reduced hours, and he wants to spend MORE than we did last year.

As usual, President Obama refuses to accept any responsibility for sequestration, even tho it was his team who suggested it and he signed the bill into law. And as usual, he is playing the blame game while trying to scare voters into believing the sky will fall if the spending budget is cut a measly 2.8%. If Obama can’t deal with this, it’s clear we will never have meaningful reductions in deficit spending while he is President. Most of us would probably agree that the arbitrary nature of sequestration is not the most responsible way to reduce spending, and I believe we could find many ways to cut spending that wouldn’t have the same impact on the public, Obama has left Congress with only two options: sequestration or no reductions. With those as the choices I have to go with sequestration and hope (probably unrealistically) that the Administration will not attempt to punish the public when making their (limited) choices on the allocation of the reductions.

How does a cut in the federal budget cut pay to these people?
The dirty little secret is that THERE ARE NO CUTS. There is only a decrease in the rate of increase. We will still spend more money than we did last year.
Obama claims that there will be a decrease in the number of first responders. When did the federal government start paying firefighters, police and paramedics? Obama claims that teachers will be laid off. When did the federal government start paying teachers’ salaries? Is that not a function of local governments?

How about cutting the social security benefits to foriegners who come into this country and collect benefits without ever contributing anything into it. Like money that was added into the budgets for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that is no longer needed. They also keep blaming G.W. Bush. Many good comments, including George pointing out that even with sequestration we are on track to spend more this year than last. Amazing. The root of this problem, as with every other significant issue that has come up during Obama’s presidency, is that he is incapable of expressing leadership. We are experiencing the consequences of electing a President who never before in his life led or managed anything. His method of communicating indirectly thru the media his “my way or the highway” message to the other side, along with the constant blaming of others, is perhaps the most ineffective approach he could use to resolve issues – but that seems to be all he knows.
Obama’s rhetoric is absurd. All federal agencies have already made plans in the event the sequestration goes into affect. Customs and Border Protection will not have any fewer officers working at ports of entry and Border Patrol will not have fewer agents working between the ports if sequestration goes into affect. These are considered the “mission critical” positions, often referred to as “essential personnel” and when the government shuts downs during temporary shutdowns due to lack of agreement on budget issues and continuing resolutions, the agencies send home the non-essential personnel, not the essential. The very idea that the Department of Transportation would send home air traffic controllers is absurd and anyone who knows the process knows this.

Obama continues to think he can get with this rhetorical bulls*** because voters reelected him. Like the elitist that he is, he thinks that the rest of us are as stupid as he really is. In reality, Obama is the emperor without clothes. Only a airheaded libtard would think that the government’s reducing spending would have a negative effect on the economy. In fact, wealth not taxed by the parasitic government sector would do just fine in the private sector.
Our problem is deeper than the Obamanation. More than two centuries ago, at the conclusion of our Constitutional Convention, a woman asked: “Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us” To which he replied”: “A republic, madam, if you can keep it.” Now, in 2013, we are on the verge of jettisoning the grand experiment in republican government for a socialist welfare state that is doomed to fail. Obama and his ilk do it by assembling a coalition of special interest groups that are direct beneficiaries of government largesse, or acquiesence , and for whom the ultimate consequences of the resulting lack of fiscal discipline are not important, as long as they can have their demands met in the short term. These include government employees and their families, labor union goons and their compliant membership, radical environmentalists, crony capialists (particularly those in “green” industries), minorities (and others) who live off the welfare system, and any one else capable of being bought off. Most of these votes are bought with the tax dollars of hard-working Americans.
Conservatives know instinctively that, no matter where you set the bar in terms of government largesss, the populace will adjust its behavior accordingly. People are, after all, inherently lazy, if given the opportunity. Lower the bar to make welfare more accessible, and more will fall into the dependency trap. Raise it, and more will be forced to actually work for a living–perish the thought! Enter the Democrat Party, which cares more about gaining and holding political power than it does about setting fair and equitable ground rules for individual economic success. It will lie, cheat, and steal from taxpayers to advance its criminal agenda. It will kowtow to the unreasonable demands of organized labor (e.g. “card check”) in exchange for massive campaign donations stolen from its membership in the form of forced union dues, most of which have nothing to do with collective bargaining. So, in setting the bar so low, the Democrat Party is complicit in the destruction of the Republic because it is trading our long-term fiscal health, and the Republic itself, for short-term political gain.
Every recession or Depression we have experienced in our nation’s history is a result of misguided government intervention into the economy, of which the creation of the Federal Reserve System is the most significant. The tragedy is that so many millions of innocent people have been harmed in the process. As long as Obama and the Democrats are in charge, our economy will continue to flounder.
As the philosopher Dennis Prager observed back in 2008, “the problem is not Obama, but a nation that would elect an Obama.” And as Pogo once said, “we have met the enemy and it is us.” Obama is just the current personification of all our worst instincts. He is not a leader by any stretch of the imagination, but a political panderer and demagogue of the first order.

Several commenters have mentioned the “budget.” There hasn’t been a budget since obama got elected the first time. He passed up the required “budget” deadline again. This way he doesn’t have to list income and expenses, or show a surplus or deficit amount. He can just list his ever increasing amounts of MY money he wants to spend on those who don’t earn it.
Please quit using the term “budget,” since it faded away after obama got elected. Another name needs to be used. Maybe something like “ghost budget,” since nobody can see it.

Several years ago, illegals sending money back to Mexico was that nation’s number two source of income. Oil was number one.
There are illegals getting a bigger monthly Social Security check than I am, and I paid into it all of my working life. The best way to save Social Security is to put it back in an interest-bearing account like it was when it was first created, and only pay it out to those who paid into it, like it used to be.
