A SEAL serves his country again [Reader Post]

The team that planned the Bin Laden raid:

Following the death of Osama Bin Laden Barack Obama provided the country with a riveting account of the raid:

The president traced the death of bin Laden to a tip received last August. He said he was briefed at the time on the “possible lead,” and that after months of intelligence work it was determined bin Laden was hiding in a compound “deep” inside Pakistan. Obama said, after determining the intelligence was sound, he authorized the operation to bring him to justice last week.

He said a “small team” of Americans went after bin Laden in Abbottabad on Sunday. “After a firefight, they killed Usama bin Laden and took custody of his body,” the president said.

Senior administration officials, in a briefing with reporters, afterward said the administration had determined by February that they would pursue the compound “custom built to hide someone of significance” in Pakistan. This decision led to a series of national security meetings starting in March to develop a course of action. Obama gave the final order to pursue the operation on April 29, officials said.

The house was 100 yards from the gate of the Kakul Military Academy, an army-run institution where top officers train. A Pakistan intelligence official said the property where bin Laden was staying was 3,000 square feet.

At 3:30 p.m. EST, a 40-man Navy Seals squadron raided a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, killing the Al Qaeda leader with a bullet to the head.

Four Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters dropped 24 men on the compound. One helicopter suffered a “hard landing” inside the compound after experiencing a mechanical failure and had to be destroyed on the site, according to one defense official.

There was a large shootout. The residents at the compound resisted. The total raid took 40 minutes.

Obama’s words:

Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

Surprise! It was another Obama lie. A first hand account says so:

Several news outlets have finally got their hands on a copy of the new book about the raid on Osama bin Laden’s Pakistan compound, and the details emerging contradict many of the earlier reports about what happened inside the house on the night the al Qaeda leader was killed. No Easy Day is set to be released September 11, but The Huffington Post’s Marcus Baram picked up a preview copy in a used bookstore, which is a common way to find pre-released books. The Associated Press bought a copy as well.

The book, written by ex-Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette (under the pseudonym Mark Owen), is a first-person account of the raid on the Abbottabad compound where bin Laden had been in hiding for years. According Bissonnette’s version of events, there was no extended firefight between SEAL Team 6 members and bodyguards and bin Laden himself never got the chance to confront or even see the soldiers before they killed him. Instead, he was shot in the hallway outside of his bedroom, then “disappeared into the dark room.” By the time the soldiers entered, he was already dying of wounds to the head. Bissonnette says he and another team member then shot him several more times in the chest to ensure he was dead.

One has to wonder what the Obama-commissioned movie account will be like. Would it have Obama shooting Bin Laden himself or merely flying the chopper?

Zero Dark Thirty promises more information on the operation than you already know, which I can almost guarantee will be behind the scenes stuff with satellites, surveillance cameras and other things of that nature.

Why not give all our secrets away?

Obama expresses his gratitude for those who risked it all:

The SEALS have made it clear that they are unhappy with Obama’s abuse of secrecy. Bissonette has done this country a great service by relating the firsthand account of the raid. Given the frequency with which this administration leaks national security secrets and politicizes intel that suits Obama no one should be bothered by Bissonette making certain we know the truth.

You should go back and double-check your details Dr. John. I believe you will find that after Osama ran back into the bedroom, MB was ascending the stairs behind the point man and they heard the BOP BOP of suppressed carbines, fired from outside the building by his teammates. Osama had retreated to the bedroom, looked outside through a window and was shot in the head by one of MB’s teammates outside the building. When MB entered the room behind the point man, Osama was already down and had “an obvious defect” to the right side of his head. He was in a pool of blood and still twitching. The point man pushed the 2 wailing women into the corner and MB and other teammates in the room put their laser dots on Osama’s chest and fired.

A very different account than the 5 or 6 stories the White House put out right after the event.

Sarcasm on:

Obama, lie????????? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo. Why would he have to do that?

Obama use bin-Laden death to try to gain political advantage???????? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo. Why would he have to do that?

So what’s suddenly happened to the frequently repeated line that any detailed information revealed about the raid seriously compromises operational and national security? I was hearing that argument not much more than a week ago. It was the centerpiece of the OPSEC PAC’s entire little swiftboating operation.

Now Obama seems to be at fault for having provided too few details, and details that weren’t totally accurate.

This reminds me a lot of the instantaneous right wing message shift from Obama is totally irresponsible for not involving us in Libya to Obama is totally irresponsible for getting us involved in Libya.

A total reversal, and nobody on the right seems to notice.

You’ll be happy to read this.

Fort Bragg, NC – The White House Press Office announced today that President Obama will soon be inducted into the Special Forces Association and receive an honorary Green Beret.

Officials have said the honor will be bestowed in an upcoming September 11th ceremony at Fort Bragg.

The honorary beret comes in recognition of the President’s decisive role in covert operations throughout the world during his term — including the killing of Osama bin Laden last year in Pakistan, and his combat action in Afghanistan months ago.

Army Public Affairs has confirmed that Lieutenant General Charles Cleveland will personally present Obama with his beret and a specially engraved Fairbairn-Sykes combat knife.

The knife, traditionally used by elite soldiers world-wide since the beginning of the 20th century, will have the President’s name stamped on the blade, along with the names of deceased Special Forces Medal of Honor recipients Randall Shugart and Gary Gordon, immortalized in the novel and film Black Hawk Down.

The presentation will be in a small but highly anticipated ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center.

The White House released a statement saying that the President is proud to be recognized for his accomplishments and role in ridding the world of dangerous enemy actors, and restated his firm determination to “continue doing his best to keep the country safe from those that would do her harm.”

Obama also stated that although he had never seen the Black Hawk Down film, or read the book, he was still proud to be counted among the ranks of the most elite Special Operations soldiers.

During a late afternoon briefing, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney fielded questions, including one about the possibility of the President also receiving a Navy SEAL trident.

“The President has in fact already received his Trident from the SEAL community,” said Carney. “He was honored to accept the insignia during a private ceremony in California, a week after his gutsy call where he singlehandedly took out bin Laden.”

When Carney was asked who had initiated the calls for President Obama to be given the illustrious honors, he hesitated before replying, “we’ll dig into it.”

Pentagon officials, taking note of the President’s extensive knowledge and experiences in special operations throughout the world, is also exploring the possibility of making him an honorary member of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, the Air Force 24th Special Tactics Squadron, and Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance Company.

So now he’ll have a Beret to go with the CMOH and his well deserved Peace Prize.

@UpChuck.Liberals:Here is the link to the article with a link describing his actions. It looks like someone is having some good fun with this. Keep in mind, the “Duffleblog” is a version of the “Onion”.

@Greg:As I predicted to you a few days ago, the SEAL did in fact violate his non disclosure agreements. No big surprise. If he was in violation, then that means whoever leaked the intel to those other reporters/publishers, will have violated theirs as well. You have any updates on Holder’s team’s “investigations” into those leaks or will we be waiting until after the election if they even come out with anything at all? It does seem kind of strange how quick they determined the SEAL violated his agreements but they just can’t seem to figure out those intel leaks that made Obama look good.

@Greg:

Obama leaks everything about the raid except the truth. Obama allowed Hollywood access to classified intelligence for a movie to glorify Obama.

I can’t take your words seriously, Greg. Sorry

So what was the big Obama lie? That there was a firefight? Does anyone think quite possibly that this was what he was told? But this is characteristic of the ultra-right’s charges of Obama’s lies.

Greg, you have ZERO credibility here. You’re nothing more than a hack for the Obama Administration.

THE PENTAGON BETTER KNOW THEIR PRIORITY AND GET THE WHITE HOUSE LEAKERS FIRST,
THE SEALS DID ONLY CORRECTED THEIR LEAKS BECAUSE THEY ARE OUTRAGE OF THE WHITE HOUSE, AND NOW THE PENTAGON WANT TO SWITCH THE CULPABILITY TO THE SEAL USING THEM AS COBAYES IN THOSE LEAKS,
YOU BETTER NOT, OTHERWISE YOU WILL DESERVE THE SHAME FROM THE CITIZENS,
AND LOOSE THE PRESTIGE YOU HAD JUST LIKE OBAMA LOST IT,
YOU BETTER KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT A GAME. THE SEALS ARE NOT PLAYING EITHER,
GET YOUR OWN ACT TOGETHER BEFORE ACCUSING THOSE SEALS, THEY ARE UNTOUCHABLE
AND LEAVE IT THAT WAY, IF YOU DON’T WANT A MASTER PROBLEM COMING AT YOUR BOOTS
