Osama Bin-Laden Killed….Congrats To Our Warriors!

To our Navy Seals, and our military…

US officials have confirmed that Osama bin Laden, al Qaeda’s top leader, was killed during a raid by US forces in Pakistan today.

President Barack Obama said Osama bin Laden was killed by “a small team of Americans” during a raid on a safe house in Abbottabad, Pakistan. “After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body,” Obama said. No US personnel were killed during the operation. According to CNN, “senior US officials” have said the operation was conducted by US NAVY SEALs inserted by multiple helicopters, one of which crashed due to mechanical failure. At least 3 other people, including one of bin Laden’s sons, were also killed in the firefight.

The US zeroed in on bin Laden’s location after receiving intelligence in August 2010 that he was “hiding in a compound deep inside Pakistan,” Obama said.

And from President Bush:

Earlier this evening, President Obama called to inform me that American forces killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al Qaeda network that attacked America on September 11, 2001. I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission. They have our everlasting gratitude. This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done.

And a great comment from Daniel Pipes…this is a great day for America, but the war isn’t over:

Bin Laden was just one part of al-Qaeda, which is just a part of the Islamic-terrorist effort, which is just a part of the Islamist movement — so the announcement of his death tonight by the U.S. government makes little operational difference. The war on terror has not fundamentally changed, much less been won.

But because bin Laden symbolized Islamic terror, his taunting presence via video and audio recordings for nearly ten years after 9/11 energized his allies and frustrated his enemies. Conversely, his execution by U.S. forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan, gives Americans pride in their country, encourages the security and intelligence organizations, and is a body blow to Islamists.

Krauthammer on Fox News at 10:15pm PST (interviewed via phone with Bret Baier):

It’s a great day, and it’s a great moment for America, and I think the principal effect, and there will be many, but the most important is to demonstrate the reach, the power and the efficiency of the United States Military.

That I think is going to reverberate around the world.

We have suffered over the last decade or so, and longer…we were attacked in 1998 by al-Qaeda for the first time in a major way, and after a indecisive war in Iraq and Afghanistan, it looks like we are losing, or at least sliding backwards with the operation in Libya, and I think the world had this fantasy that the United States didn’t have the power, did not have the efficiency, it did not have the might.

The way the world saw us right after Iraq, the Gulf War, the war in 1991 where there was this awe about what America could do, and this tells the world, that it could take a decade, you could be hiding anywhere in the world, we will stay on the trail, we will find you, and we will kill you.

And it’s like the Entebbe raid the Israeli’s pulled off in 1976 where they reached all the way into Uganda and extracted all the hostages and killed the hostage takers, the demonstrations of strength is the most important effect.

…it reinforces the symbolism here because al-Qaeda attacked all those different countries but the only one that could do, the only one that had the power, the reach, the global scope, the wherewithal to do it is the United States, and in a way acting in the name of the world in a way only we can do, which is how we have been seen since the fall of the soviet union, early on in that period, again after the gulf way, as the only one who could do it easily and with great triumph, lately people have been thinking America has slipped, I think this is a great restoration of that image.

CNN Reporting that GITMO detainees provided intel on #osama bin laden’s whereabouts.

Now that makes me happy Obama failed in shutting down that prison, as he promised.

Guess Gitmo served a purpose after all.

Unconfirmed pictures of the dead maggot, it’s graphic. Totally unconfirmed.

Getting word that the photo is a fake, not surprising but who knows.

Yup, its a fake.

More information on the operation:

U.S. officials did not share with foreign governments any details about the operation before it took place, a senior administration official said, including with Pakistan, whose leaders were informed after the raid. Only a “very small number” of people within the U.S. government knew about it, the senior official said.

The operation, according to senior officials who briefed reporters early Monday morning, hinged almost entirely on the hunt for a single man: a courier operating out of Pakistan who had been trusted by bin Laden for years.

Using information from detainees in U.S. custody, U.S. analysts and operatives spent years figuring out the courier’s identity, concluding that he was a former protege of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the self-declared mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks who is being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The courier “in particular had our constant attention,” the official said.

Detainees “identified this man as one of the few al-Qaeda couriers trusted by bin Laden, indicated he might be living with or protecting bin Laden,” the official said. But for years, the United States was unable to track him down or uncover his real name, which did not happen until four years ago. Two years ago, U.S. officials narrowed down the region in Pakistan where the courier was working, senior administration officials said..

…Then, in August, U.S. officials found the compound that turned out to be bin Laden’s hiding spot. It was described as an extraordinary place, custom-made for him, with 12- to 18-foot security walls, multiple interior walls dividing the property and massive privacy walls blocking even a third-story balcony. Despite being valued at $1 million, the property had no Internet or phone service, the official said.

“When we saw the compound . . . we were shocked by what we saw,” the official told reporters, describing it as “an extraordinarily unique compound,” built perhaps in 2005 and expressly for bin Laden. “Everything we saw . . . was perfectly consistent with what our experts expected bin Laden’s hideout to look like.”

Thank’s to those who interrogated and/or waterboarded the scumbag at Gitmo four years ago that gave this information up.

That a Guantanamo detainee began giving up details on the courier in 2006-2007, I googled “Al Qaeda high ranking captured” and looked for that time range.

Here’s the first one that popped up. A high ranking Al Qaeda who was in Saddam Hussein’s regime.

The al-Qaeda leader who is thought to have devised the plan for the July 7 suicide bombings in London and an array of terrorist plots against Britain has been captured by the Americans.Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi, a former major in Saddam Hussein’s army, was apprehended as he tried to enter Iraq from Iran and was transferred this week to the “high-value detainee programme” at Guantanamo Bay.

The date of that post is April 27th, 2007, almost exactly four years ago.

From Sarah Palin:

Americans tonight are united in celebration and gratitude. God bless all the brave men and women in our military and our intelligence services who contributed to carrying out the successful mission to bring bin Laden to justice and who laid the groundwork over the years to make this victory possible. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of these brave Americans who relentlessly hunted down our enemy.

This is a victory for the American people, for the victims who were heartlessly murdered on September 11 and in Al Qaeda’s other numerous attacks, and for all the peace-loving people of the world.

May God bless our troops and our intelligence services, and God bless America!

You have to be kidding me!

Asked how bin Laden’s body will be treated, a senior administration official told reporters on a conference call that “we are ensuring that is handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition.”

The official, who refused to be identified, said the matter is “something that we take very seriously, and so, therefore, this is being handled in an appropriate manner.”

Peter Bergen, a national security analyst, predicted on CNN that bin Laden’s face will be shown because of visual evidence that must be displayed. He also noted that Islamic law calls for bodies to be buried within 24 hours of death.

“In Islam, the body has to be buried in 24 hours,” Bergen said. “That will happen.”

What a disgrace

Israeli officials: BL assassination proves efficiency of targeted killings

The United States is conducting DNA testing on slain al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and used facial recognition techniques to help identify him, a U.S. official said on Monday.

Bin Laden was identified by the assault force that killed him in a firefight in Pakistan in which he resisted and was shot in the head, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Results of the DNA tests should be available in the next few days, the official told Reuters.

The strike force was on the ground for less than 40 minutes and the operation was watched real-time by CIA Director Leon Panetta and other intelligence officials in a conference room at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, the official said.

“When word came in that the operation was a success, CIA officials in the conference room had a rather large applause,” the official said.

U.S. official: bin Laden’s body has already been disposed of – buried at sea.

If at sea as reported, Bin Laden was given a burial that over a thousand 9/11 victims didn’t get.

Yee ha! Burn in hell. I hope he found out his virgins all look like Helen Thomas.
God bless the soldiers that took him out.

Months in Planning and a Successful Execution of the Plan. The Taliban is still a threat, Al Qaeda is still a threat, the Muslim Brotherhood and Peripherals are still a threat. Pakistan is a questionable Ally at best. Al Zawahiri is still running loose and the passing of OBL is a milestone but there are Terrorist Threats still to be dealt with and Training Camps are still producing Thugs in Pakistan and other locales.

There is a War on Terror regardless of what the current Regime calls it. It is far from over. Believe it. I have spent 12 years in the Middle East and cannot be convinced otherwise.

Now that makes me happy Obama failed in shutting down that prison, as he promised.

Guess Gitmo served a purpose after all.

Since I feel Obama is a Muslim and wants the world to be Muslim, I can see why he wanted to shut gown Gitmo and why he is doing some of the things he does and some of the things he doesn’t do.

I am guessing our King-in-Chief is having a day of morning for Osama. I am also guessing he has had a hard time awarding medals to our military. I am guessing there will be medals for those involved in killing Osama and that Obama will have the hardest time of his presidency giving them their well deserved medals.

I ain’t 100% sure Obama is a Muslim, but I know he wants to be a dictator and is making friends of our dictator enemies.

I would love to see Osama’s face when he gets his 72 virgins and he finds out why they are STILL virgins.

Thank you, OT, for your service and commitment that helped lead up to this day. If you can, tell the SF guys that the FA group is proud of them. There is a long road ahead, but this is a special day!

@Skookum: Thank America’s Second Greatest Generation. It is their accomplishment and their day. The Training, Planning and Preparation for this Mission and ones to follow are Their Purpose in Life. But dammit, it is good to win on one Mission for a change. I am very proud of those Folks that got this one done. Missions like this are JSOC Missions, supported by several branches of Service. I am very thankful that We lost none of Ours.

Taking out OBL does not bring back the 3,000 Men, Women and Children that lost their lives on 9.11.01 nor will it change the World Situation but it is good that OBL reached room temperature a few days ago. There are more like Him still at large. There is a huge job left to do.

  6. 9

Justice is done. Thanks to our men and women in the military and intelligence services who made this day possible. Thank you President Bush for your willingness to engage the enemy. Thank you President Obama for not changing course, both in Gitmo, and in theater. Thanks most of all to our soldiers with boots on the ground, including OT2 and CJ, who didn’t worry about OBL’s rights, human or otherwise, as he gave those up long ago.

It is a hard thing for me, to want anyone dead. In order for me to get to that point about anyone, they must show disdain for the rights of others, to the point where they kill, or order killing, callously with little to no thought about their victims. OBL is one such person, and the world is a better place today without him.

  7. 10

Thanks Old Trooper for the work you and those fellows at JSOC did, it is good to hear. You made history. Another terrorist sent to hell and I’m sure you guys are having a cigar and enjoying yourselves.

On Fox, they’re saying that there was a hell of a firefight. The disabled chopper was destroyed in the compound and there’s a huge fire that’s detonating the unspent ordinance. I know, I know, Janet Reno was not in charge.

    No one hurt- Wow!

  9. 14

A great moment for our side. And all our operatives are back alive. OO-RAH for the Navy Seals and all involved and God Bless the United States of America!

  10. 17

    Mr. Irons

Something just doesn’t feel right with me about these, “facts.” Mere notion that the body will be, “buried” within hours of supposedly killed but not giving the media or public any viewing of the body (grim as it might be) makes me kinda questionable as this Nation has exposed the body of wanted men to the public to prove the claim in the historic past.

If the man is honestly dead, fine. If not, well, times are about to get interesting…

  11. 19

@Mr. Irons: I agree..In as much as I want to be “Jubilant” about finally ridding the world of this Scum… Sound ‘evidence’ where is it? For someone as menacing as bin laden, would the body not be in possession of the US Military since they were the ones who finally got him? Regardless of Political religious law? I mean come on – this is a biggie for the US…
(They drag our dead through their streets… and other evil things)
Where are the ‘real’ photos (not photo shop photos)? Grim as that might sound… There are plenty of Hussein and others…

Usually when you do DNA you have something to match that up to. Does the military have that…? I mean the guy has been well hidden for 20 years…or so they say….

  12. 20

I can’t believe it but it must be true. I’m overwhelmed with grief for those who have died because of this man and overjoyed at the news of his demise. Pres. Obama should not use this as a political victory but I fear otherwise and am gratified that he at least called Pres.Bush to inform him of our success. Has it escaped anyone’s notice that Bin Laden and his followers used women as shields? The fight unfortunately dosen’t end here but I want to thank the members of the CIA and Seal Team 6 for bringing some
closure to this aspect of the fight which began with Osama Bin Laden and his war on the USA. God bless our fighting men and women who bring the fight to the enemy and indeed, we didn’t ask for this war, but we will indeed finish it! God bless the USA.

  14. 22

Jeez! This is surreal! They had the body, etc? On board the ship, right? No access, no nothing….this is a piece of crap. Dancing in the streets! Unbelievable…just how gullible is this populace?

Its amazing how practically every comment off the tube today is bin Laden….bin Laden…bin Laden…..who has been killed four or five times at least………

    Watch for the upcoming video………………………………..

  15. 25

It is long past time to turn the Seals and other SF teams loose on the pirates and other terrorist leaders who continue to terrorize the world. This kind of operation is the only thing these people understand!

  16. 26

they did it all by themself, that is the power of the MILITARY FORCES IN AMERICA THE GREATEST,
and they are the most focus AMERICANS you can find. WOW FOR THEM ALL,

  17. 27

@Hard Right: Hard Right, there is nothing in the Koran that says ANY of the “virgins” are indeed female- I submit that, for terrorists, they are all named “Bubba”-
As for how he was buried, that’s the only way it COULD have happened. It’s a goodfeeling knowing that bottom feeding scum- suckers are ripping his face off right about now.
My only complaint- he should have been sewn into a complete pigskin first.

  18. 28

@Esdraelon: Just WHAT is your bitch here? That he was killed? or are you like some birther, who believes in conspiracies? I know, an alien spaceship, piloted by Elvis, swooped in and grabbed him- The factis that the person is dead- really, irretrievably DEAD-
Here’s a piece of advice for you- conspiracies unravel, the truth never does. As Ben Franklin once said, ” You can have a secret between two people, as long as one of them is dead.” Conspiracies, not so much.

  19. 29

    Evil is removed:

    Hosni Mubarack is removed.
Saddam Hussein is removed and killed.
    Osama bin Laden is killed.

Rise up and fight against evil:
Mubarack Hussein Os(b)ama … remove evil.

  20. 30

@Bob: You can congradulate Obama if you wish, but if it had not been for the infrastructure Bush put into place prior to all of this (You know, Gitmo, Renditions, Waterboarding, etc…) we would not have gotten the intel, nor had this chance, so extend credit to Bush also, or all Obama would have had to work with would have been himself, for he does not know how intel works- at least Bush had a father who was once head of the CIA.

  21. 31

    another vet

Our military performed brilliantly. Our silent warriors once again proved their worth. No glamor, no glitz. Just results.

We need to remember that when Saddam was captured and his two kids were killed, it didn’t end the war in Iraq. When Hitler died, the NAZI’s still fought on. When Lenin died, communism did not die with him. When Stalin died, the Cold War did not. OBL’s death does not mean the end of terrorism either. Here is an eerie reminder from the latest WikiLeaks scandal. This is far from over.

  22. 33

What my bitch is, mister, is readily noted, but apparently you are too busy dancing down the street to have a clue.

If the man is dead, great, but it’s amazing that all this is done simply on the say so.

Let’s see some evidence, or maybe the ‘head shot’ made the man impossible to identify. The burial at sea, eh? Sadaam’s sons were plastered, in their dead glory, all over the world media within hours after their being sent to their ‘virgins.’

And don’t ‘birther’ me…..legitimate skepticism will always rule the day in a free society. However, it appears not only can the sheep go ‘baaaa’, but also they have the capacity to ridicule.

    So: Where Is The ‘Beef’?

  23. 34

I’m gonna give President Obama props on this one. Not as much as the JSOC team, but he deserves props nonetheless. Clinton let UBL slip through three times. Obama saw the chance and took it. He said he’d go to Pakistan to get him if he had to, and he did.
Special props to the JSOC team though. Not one man lost…simply outstanding!

  24. 35

I agree with that. Obama specifically noted that the entire operation was ‘under his direction’. Well, ‘direction’ means many different things, but Obama obviously wants the general meaning to take root after what he said…..

I wonder if now that Osama is ‘dead’ will a lot of people turn against the war?

  25. 36

    Old Trooper 2

@GaffaUK: JSOC 1 Osama 0, Obama – Present and nowhere relevant.

The XO for the elimination of OBL pre dates Obama’s Coronation. Following someone else’ s Plan is not laudable. Period. Taking credit for actions of Others is typical of the Current Regime. Credit goes entirely to JSOC, both Operational and Intelligence Assets, in My POV. Period.

I have to laugh at the lefty blogs. Plenty of projection, deflection, and protection for the Won. He had it all planned when he campaigned in LA, or was it NY, or the WH Correspondants Dinner, or when he was golfing. Intel on the ground goes back 4 years. Firm leads started 2 years ago. Confirmation was solid last August. Hillary nearly let the cat out of the bag, with her big mouth, last year. Intelligence with spies takes an awfully long time. This is info from Wesley Clark and other generals that were interviewed on Fox. Can you imagine the fallout with a botched raid in another country’s airspace and real estate? It was all firm and confirmed intelligence. As far as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc.- You head her home with the one that brought ya.

@Zac: Roger That. I never saw a teleprompter initiated Air Assault or teleprompter generated Head Shot. Bin Laden was nor Campaigned or Speeched to Death. Bin Laden was not Campaign Funded, Community Organized or Golf Coursed to Death. No One rappelled down from Air Force One over the Compound.

Yes, I will be hanging up my guns and boots before the end of this month and strapping on My Guns and pulling on My Own Boots at Home. All I know for sure is that Bin Laden was not Politicized to Death. It was real Men with a purpose that should get the credit as the Pretender intends to cut the Defense Budget and JSOC will end up “doing more with less” while Air Force One gets more mileage on Campaign trips. How about downsizing that Bird?

  29. 41

    @rich wheeler:

Well, maybe it’s because you don’t find too many hypocrites on FA….give people credit where it’s due..If one agrees, say so….if not, let that be known also….or hold the peace….

If you believe lyin Biden and the daily misinformation from the Bamster, the surge in Iraq did not work, democracy is taking hold in Egypt, the non war in Libya will be won with kinetic military action while leading from behind. This is firm foreign policy and the free world is eternally grateful.

  31. 43

Good for you Old Trooper! It does not change my opinion if the regime one bit. JSOC are number one in my opinion, those boys are something else, that’s for sure. My only regrets are that I wasn’t there being a part of the whole thing and shootin at him myself.

  32. 44

@Esdraelon: Dude- I am white, I don’t dance- I do however, view with skepticism “conspiracies” that others, apparently like yourself, take for granted- I am sure there is film, which we might see some of, but putting Osama out to sea with all the other garbage was the wisest thing to do, and I am sure that haad been the plan ever since we began hunting him. We didn’t want anywhere there could be a shrine to this piece of fecal matter.

  33. 45

    @ Blake
I would probably have questions if this were a CIA only op. But it was JSOC, so I’m 99.999% sure UBL received the double-tap that was reported. The JSOC guys won’t cover for an administration for long unless it involves another mission.
On the bright side, given ocean currents and the possibility of hitching a ride on a Great White, there is a chance we could see UBL pulled up on the next season of Deadliest Catch. 🙂

  34. 46

‘Dude’…What’s race got to do with dancing in the streets? I saw a lot of different races dancing in the street in the reports last night in NY and Washington…..??

As for ‘conspiracies’…you said it, I didn’t. Conspiracy theories develop over time, many times with relevant evidence to create such. On this matter, however, it’s only a day old and Osama is given a burial at sea, handily making it impossible to get direct evidence DNA off the body. With Photoshop you could see yourself plastered on Facebook tomorrow as a corpse and would not know the difference. In fact, Curt published a link to a photo done back in 2001.

Did they have an Iman handy onboard the ship to do the deal??

It may well all be factual, but the fact of the matter at this point is that there is NO evidence that bin Laden is dead. It is all being done on say-so, and with the lack of trust most hold this government at the moment, in this country, as well as the world, there is a LOT of skepticism. Some corpse may well be swimming with the fishes, but can you say for certain that it is Osama, based solely on the word of the US government?

Conspiracy Theory: A public exchange of ideas surrounding an event – filling the vacuum left by the Press in refusing to do its job of investigating and reporting it.

So, again, Where Is The Beef?

  35. 48

Thank God for our wonderful service men! Kudos must be given to Patreaus who stuck his head on the block in while going after things in Pakistan, what with drones, etc., something the administration was loathe to do as the Pakistanis didn’t like it. (I do wonder how many permission slips they had to get from the folks in D.C before they actually carried out the operation, but that’s just a thought that ran through my mind. Hard to fight when your hands are tied by absurd so called legalities)

All in all a good day! However, normally when one cuts the head off a snake, the body dies. In this case, citing the centuries of radical hatred, etc. that comes from these people, one must still assume the body is whole. The deep rooted hatred not only for Israel, but for anything other than their own views I’m afraid will keep these folks going on their merry way. As such, we must not ease up on the pressure! We go after these radicals until they fold up their tents!

  36. 49

    James Raider

Awesome performance by incomparable Navy Seals – the best of America’s foot flawlessly put forward. Well done.

Watching Obama’s announcement of Osama’s death, I couldn’t help but get the feeling that he was overly insinuating himself into direction of the “ground” operation. It was strange. He was in full campaigning mode with a speech that was obviously written long ago in anticipation of this momentous event.

  37. 50

@Aqua: I’m with Aqua. I’ll give kudos to Obama for carrying on with the Bush quest to nab UBL “dead or alive”. And for not getting in the way. Yes, he’s irrelevant to the extent that he was hardly part of spec ops operations as a participant. But he was relevent since there was no “go” without his approval.

I’ll also say the POTUS is one lucky SOB that his quest to close Gitmo wasn’t as easy as delivering campaign promises. I do have to wonder if, despite everyone’s distaste for “torture” in interrogation, it was just such treatment that yielded the intel that led to this operation.

There’s much to be wary of in the aftermath. But I’m going to save some caveats I have about all this perhaps for Wordsmith’s “political” themed thread. For this base news of one more bad guy, exiting the planet, I won’t be dancing in the streets. But I, like the Mark Twain quote above, do read of his demise with pleasure. And congratulate our troops for a magnificent mission, and to the POTUS for not standing in the way.

BTW, a Politico article has a bit more detail. The break down and destruction of the main chopper during the op. Don’t know how they’d show Obama’s “face” to appease the skeptics since they shot him in the face.

On a more flippant side, I see that Hillary was included in the final briefing, but not the other unofficial women of war, Susan Rice and Samantha Powers. Wonder if they felt left out? LOL
