Hard Time America [Reader Post]

The Obama Administration is playing the convict prison card. Most Americans want criminals incarcerated longer in more austere less elaborate facilities. The facts are that many prisons have become playgrounds. Between Yale and jail this discussion will concentrate on doing hard time behind bars eliminating the “Three Hots and a Cot” leisure Plaza Hotel prison mentality. Amendment VIII of the United States Constitution asserts, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted”; then whereas, this narrative will focus on the enlightened humanitarian side of incarceration it will also examine innovative and possibly pertinent means and methods more substantive to addressing today’s social realities. This analysis will be confined to punishment of the Big Three; namely, murder, rape, terrorism in a societal situation where death by execution no longer is an available option. There have been criminals like Richard Speck, Charlie Manson and many others that instead of death penalty executions are held in prison, costing taxpayers millions of dollars, until they finally gasp their last and die from natural causes. Unforgettable, the photograph of a mocking jerk smile Richard Speck, killer of six slaughtered and raped Philippines nurses, seen gloating in an open door prison cell at Statesville Prison Illinois propped up on the cell bed wall hugging “his husband’ while wearing nothing but pink brief underwear. There is something seriously wrong here, if this evolution of incarceration continues every prison will, along with free medical, dental, and legal services, have an environment featuring exercise equipment including all the latest gadgets, bowling alleys, billiard tables, all tastes pornography available cable television, cellular telephones and computers with www access; plus, ample supplies of drugs and alcohol while including “conjugal visits” from wives, girlfriends, and even prostitutes including pregnancy care paid by the prison.

In the very affluent Cheshire Connecticut, on July 23 2007, a home invasion multiple murders took place when a physician’s wife and mother with her two daughters were raped, set ablaze, and then murdered in one of the most heinous crimes scenes ever recorded. The prime murderer is one Steven Hayes, then on parole with a rap sheet dated back to 1981, and Joshua Komisarjevsky his dimwitted, long criminal record, accomplish. Officially, Hayes has been tried by a jury, convicted, and sentenced to death even though Connecticut liberal state politicians continue to debate “humanitarian principles” that will eliminate the death penalty. Recently, Hayes was seen sitting relaxed reading a Toni Morrison romance novel, provided by the prison library, while noshing on a Snickers Bar surrounded by bags of potato chips and other snacks from the prison commissary. His jail cell is swept, mopped and cleaned twice weekly when a fresh set of linens is also provided.

People are frightened; take any urban bus, subway or travel by train or plane and the sublime sensation haunts that someone nearby has done hard time in prison. Just earlier this month, two young guys visiting from England were mercilessly slain in a lowlife neighborhood of Sarasota Florida. The first arrest suspect is a teenager gang member whom just a week earlier was set free from county jail by a district judge. These first news reports, from the major media sources, blamed the victims saying they were druggies looking to purchase narcotics in a seedy neighborhood. Those reports were soon found to be completely false, no drugs found on the victims, and the truth was they were just two innocent college aged British tourists who tried to hitch a free ride back to their hotel. Obama, and his prejudiced acolyte Attorney General Erik Holder, wants divisiveness; they are constantly using the race card regarding societal crime and incarceration; which means, they plan to hold onto their slanted extreme expression of demagoguery and deceit when dealing with the threat of crime in America.

Recently reported, the story which prompted this narrative, was an article reprinted through Flopping Aces that Charlie Manson, infamous for the Tate-LaBianca seven victim Manson Family murder spree, was contacted, using his cell phone, by some news wonk (Spain Vanity Fair) where he touted to the journalist his beliefs in the threat of climate change global warming. Charlie’s attitude on greeniac environmental conditions are completely irrelevant but the notion that he has access to wireless telephone communications does prompt serious concerns. Is cell phone communications now a protected right safe guarded and subsidized by the taxpayers of the State of California? ‘Guards at Corcoran State Prison found the phone, according to prison spokeswoman Terry Thornton, and Manson was charged with violating prison rules, but not with a crime, because there is no law in California that prohibits inmates from possessing phones.” (Los Angelus Times) This is a prime example of social insanity; Charlie Manson is just one convict so the indications are there must be many others that have these devices plus extra privileges. From his book Helter Skelter the former LA Prosecutor Vincent Pugliesi commented on Charlie’s smug attitude when being convicted to prison, “No problem, I always get sex in prison!” Such a vulgar statement, from a guy living in a taxpayer paid air conditioned climate controlled facility, makes that complaint even the more repulsive.

People are furious with reports of what actually happens behind prison walls; this does not mean the public wants dungeons but the anger signals are the desire for greater rationality regarding the housing and care of convicted prisoners. People want an end to the revolving doors recidivism plaque that is plunging American society into even greater depths of fear, terror and chaos. Charlie Manson receives, at his request, among other amenities, taxpayer paid dental services. What takes place is that as private people struggle to pay for tooth aches, dentures, tooth replacements, and facial reconstructions those in prison, like Manson, get seated and cared for as instructive cases seen by both dental school students, using the most modern state-of-the-arts equipment, and dentist instructors. The patient time perhaps is a bit longer for some procedure but for the cause of professional education of dentists, oral hygienists, endodontists, and orthodontists a little extra wait is worth it. Next, Charlie, at age 79, living most his life behind bars, cannot be allowed to grow old and croak when California’s best medicine could keep him breathing perhaps for another twenty years. With the slightest physical complaint, mental too, Manson is quickly put on a gurney to be transported to the prison’s hospital quality level infirmary where the entire menu of medical pain killers plus other meds, are but a physician’s script away. With pharmaceutical transport restrictions and internal distribution narcotics controls that dose of Oxy-Codone or Percodan will soon cost California taxpayers well over a hundred bucks per tab. As some reluctantly admit, “the best place to experience socialized medicine is in jail.”

Food is another story altogether. Besides the “Three Hots and a Cot” from the Cook County Jail mess hall scene in The Blue Brothers movie some felons have access to more various, tasty and different grub (certain diets for certain cultures, like halal). The movie Goodfellas was not far off course where some big shots get their own kitchens with fresh foods making their own meals. Last month, at a facility in upper New York State, a prisoner received a birthday cake, not on his birthday, from girlfriend and members of his family that when the cake was tested guards discovered a slew of illegal drugs hidden beneath the icing.

Whatever constraints imposed by the public are immediately challenged by the taxpayer paid Criminal Bar that offers free legal services to convicts. Charlie’s lawyer, Gionanni DiStefano, is diligent attempting to get Manson out on parole; so, riding that downtown bus could mean a convicted mass murderer sitting in the next seat. What can be done to stop these obstructive attacks on our society from those criminal bar extreme leftist ACLU lawyers (Erik Holder, et al) that uses the words and protections proffered from our Constitution as if it were a suicide pact designed to threaten instead of protect the People? Perhaps it is appropriate to pass through the looking glass and see the problem from an entirely different angle. Every Charlie Manson in the penal system costs society the expenses of facility housing, personal care and legal representation so what assets are available to shift to new options? First Charlie’s jailbird license plate reads CAL: B-33920 and as long as he has that prison id-card he will remain a societal cost/benefit problem thus the answer is to eliminate that number. Say, for this analysis, that one day attorney DiStefano arrives at Corcoran State Penal Facility only to be informed that inmate B-33920 has disappeared; that’s right, Charlie Manson has gone poof. For this example, what has happened is Manson is no longer the property of the State of California and that Charlie has been purchased, call it one million dollars, from California by the federal government and that then that prisoner is to be set free on some remote inaccessible and impossible to escape ocean island (Midway Island or a remote Aleutian). The plan would be to have several 100 bed slab Quonset huts pre-built along with a warehouse stacked with canned foods; plus, shore nets, fishing poles and other tackle gear along with adequate supplies of sardines for bait. Include a year’s supply of bottled drinking water and that’s it. Imagine, that on some isolated island Charlie Manson is “set free” with just a backpack, sleeping bad and full canteen. No problem, if he lives another ten minutes or twenty years because he no longer is a cost/benefit penal system liability; the murderer is left to wander in a community of fellow murderers and if things go bad because of weather, earthquakes, tsunamis or the moke in the next cot “Tooo Bad”.

One can dream I suppose.

James, I hate the thought of cells for humans, cages and stalls for animals, but what can you do? You have come up with a solution.

I once called a radio show in Canada during the 80’s. They were discussing the high cost of prisoners and had a former prisoner on the show. I suggested that Canada sub-contract the care of prisoners with Mexico. I assured the host that it was a win win situation; since, Canada could save at least half the money and Mexico would be grateful for the income. The host thought it was an excellent idea, but the former prisoner was incredulous and animated. He “yelled” out tat there was no way that he was going to serve time in an uncivilized country and that such ideas were subversive.

Obviously, the prisoner had heard of prison life in Mexico and was frightened at the prospect: leading one to surmise, if that might be a deterrent for committing crime in the future.

I like the island idea, but for outdoorsmen like myself, the thought of fishing and living in the outdoors would be a permanent vacation and maybe that is part of the cost of such a program.

I like the idea of outsourcing our violent inmates to the Russians. They could reactivate all those Siberian labor camps that were closed after the breakup of the Soviet Union.

Now THAT would be a deterent!

I saw a movies once called Wedlock. It was a prison movie where each prisoner was paired with another prisoner and each had to wear a device which were also paired, but the prisoners didn’t know what device was paired with what device. The device was worn by each prisoner (around their necks) and they didn’t know who they were paired up with. If the neck devices got a certain distance apart (or one was removed) both would explode. End of story.

When I think about the costs involved with prisons and prisoners, on the taxpayers, I think of this movie. And think, with our technology, we could come up with the same device and have banishment cities out in the desert and let the hardened prisoners live out there, then they have their own fate in their own hands. Go ahead and run, but if you do…. end of story… saving taxpayers billions…

It really makes me angry especially when I watch the forensic shows on TV and the story talks about the killer, with all evidence stacked against them, they are guilty beyond the shadow of a doubt and they serve ‘time’ instead of getting the death penalty (murder). Or they ‘fight’ their death penalty sentence. Or in Charlie’s case the death penalty is abolished soon after they are incarcerated.

Does the ‘victim’ ever come into play here? You know the person who was at the ‘mercy’ of a killer who didn’t care. Who savagely (and senselessly) killed this victim? Where are the victims ‘right’s’ ? Did the victim have any say in ‘their own’ life (or death)? (Cruel and unusual punishment inflicted only pertains to perpetrators of murder, rape, maiming ?) Not what was done to the victim? Where did this go so wrong – and who defends the victim? Now, ‘that’ is insanity.

With all the new (forensic ) technology we have, video and the accuracy of guilt. Why are we not acting on that accuracy (beyond the shadow of a doubt) ? And just getting rid of these pieces of non productive garbage from society? I have no use for a murderer who has been found guilty in this day and age and duly charged. Why does society have to wind up paying twice and then some?

Funny how those ‘opposed to the death penalty’ are certainly ‘for it’ when the brutality (unfortunately) comes to their doorstep.

Funny how the Liberals can reach for that golden “morality ring” when it suits their absurd agendas about prisons, how prisoners are treated, the death penalty etc… No morality for the victims though.

Side track:
” God” is someone the Left/Liberals/Socialists wants society to ‘forget’, admonish and eliminate. Why? Ask the question – how can those who are socialists /communist / redistributer’s of wealth do so in God’s eye’s knowing there are 10 Commandments?

Government (Liberal/Left/ Socialists) want to “steal” from us via taxes. The Liberals/Left/ Socialists want people to ” covet ” their neighbor’s goods (wealth, things) in order to beat the redistribution of wealth drum – again, ‘steal’ from people. How can they possibly do this ‘morally’ (so there is no guilt on their own heads? ) and get people to “go along with the rhetoric” with Christianity, God and the 10 Commandants in the way?

Yep, our Government the Liberals /Left sure know how to twist and manipulate morality… and the Constitution.

Your problem is you believe the 6:00 news reports like evangelicals believe the Bible. You don’t seem to question anything you read or hear from the mainstream media, and you probably have no idea what you are talking about in terms of reality. Sure life is shit, according to the media. But who the hell are they? Liars. Owned by six major corporations that censor everything you read, hear and see. How hard is it to get six CEO’s on board to brainwash the masses with a bunch of lies that will lead to money in their pockets through their own corporations and investments?

Read something other than Helter Skelter and Life Magazine before you get on your high horse about Charles Manson, because otherwise you are just making yourself look like an idiot.
