Two birds, one stone: US “exits” Libya, and has been out of Afghanistan since 2006

Ah, the convenience of “just words” – pretty speeches designed to soothe the savage citizenry, and give us all new definitions by which to gauge “victory” and political approval in the 21st Century. INRE wars and enemies, the global War on Terror is obsolete, and has been replaced with “Overseas Contingencies”. And now, our POTUS has assured us that the US “exit strategy” for Libya “…will be executed this week” when command of the no fly coalition forces is turned over to NATO. This new definition tag teams Curt’s post yesterday about using language to disguise “failure” for Libya.

But some aren’t fooled by this play on words, and Jake Tapper calls out the POTUS on his convenient redefining of the absurd new age war concept, “exit strategy”.

The next Afghanistan? [Reader Post]

In 1979 Afghanistan was in the middle of a civil war when it was invaded by the Soviet Union. The Russians found a most formidable adversary in the Mujahideen. Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan referred to the Mujahideen as “freedom fighters” and both Presidents covertly supplied the Mujahideen with arms and aid in effort to help them defeat the Red Menace. The Russians were unable to conquer the Afghans and finally withdrew in 1989. Most of us applauded the defeat of the Russians. During the war, the best of the Afghan fighters- the Taliban- gained control of the country and instituted strict Islam in the wake of the war. One of the Mujahideen-Taliban was named Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden got around to thanking the US for its efforts in liberating Afghanistan in September of 2001.

Does solar activity have to KEEP going up to cause warming? Mike Lockwood responds [Reader Post]

My first post on this subject remarked on the number of scientists who assert that late 20th century global warming cannot have been driven by the sun because solar activity was not trending upwards after 1950, even though it remained at peak levels. To follow up, I asked a dozen of these scientists whether solar activity has to KEEP going up to cause warming?

Wouldn’t that be like saying you can’t heat a pot of water by turning the flame to maximum and leaving it there, that you have to turn the heat up gradually to get warming?
