The Internet must be monitored while preserving the First Amendment, terrorism doesn’t exist and we are not at war with terrorism; however, it is necessary to monitor the internet to keep an eye on home grown terrorism.
Our nation’s Chief of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, offered these rationales to justify eroding Civil Liberties to fight a threat that doesn’t exist by an enemy that doesn’t exist in a speech on Friday to the American constitution Society for Law ad Policy.
Fighting homegrown terrorism by monitoring Internet communications is a civil liberties trade-off the U.S. government must make to beef up national security.
As terrorists increasingly recruit U.S. citizens, the government needs to constantly balance Americans’ civil rights and privacy with the need to keep people safe.
Apparently, spying on domestic internet communication can be rationalized; but listening to the conversations between Americans at home and Terrorists in the Middle East is a violation of Civil Liberties. Presumably, Napolitano refers to the recent acts of Jihad carried out by Radical Islamic Fascists at Fort Hood and Times Square: however, these attacks are not mentioned and Americans are left wondering if the DHS wil be used as a political tool to monitor groups like the Tea Party and their gray haired storm Storm Troopers, some of them wearing skirts, who are mounting an effective challenge to the Progressive Agenda of the White House and the status quo of the Republican Leadership.

If we are to judge this administration and its paranoia toward political opposition and the thin skinned nature of Obama, we might be inclined to agree with him if we knew who the enemy actually is; especially, since we have a Hell of a Contingency operation going on against people we are not at war with and who we are now supposed to compromise the First amendment for and who apparently pose no threat.
We the American people are left asking President Obama. “Who the Hell is the enemy, BO? Is it Us?”

Here is a consistent, but telling description of Obama’s lack of engagement when dealing with a Nationally critical challenge:

Exposure to “double think” (contradictory evidence) usually leads to “cognitive dissonance,” an uncomfortable, if often unconscious, feeling that something is wrong. The person suffering CD then usually, according to the original formulation of the CD theory, changes their attitude or behaviour in such a way that one of the conflicting sides is tuned out and disregarded. Evidence that this actually happens is somewhat sporadic. 🙂
In a larger sense, double think and CD may go on for a long time together, because of the ambiguity of life. How can anyone know all the details of any story? People will spend a lot of time trying to construct a life narrative where the conflicting elements make sense when they really want conflicting rewards. That is, they just aren’t being realistic and want to have their cake and eat it too. This explains why so many voted for the empty suit and still support him. As they gather evidence that he isn’t what they wanted they fall away, but… BUT they have to gather the evidence. If they can’t, or don’t want to hear about it, the conflicting stories persist.
It’s going to be very interesting to see which gets here 1st… The November elections or the outright insurrection of American patriots!

JR, I heard that little gem on the radio a little while ago and nearly drove off the road. A president can conduct a war without knowing the man responsible for his armies, yet gets all bent out of shape when he is criticized, simply unbelievable. Talk about having no interest in your job and being detached. This is truly insane.

What Joseph Goebbels, …I mean Janet Napolitano is talking about is state control of media, in this case the open free speech of the internet. The exact type of censorship that China engages in, and which all Socialist regimes must have to control the minds of the people. Even if they managed to sneak it through, I don’t think it would ever get past the Supreme Court as it is not compatible with the First Amendment
Well I have to say that Big Sis is correct. Those of us who are on the right side of these issues with this admin. are a “very real threat” to them. Damn man, it does not take a professor (think obama) or a mental midget (janet) to figure out the American Patriot is only going to take so much on the issues of our freedoms before we either tar and feather them or send them to their maker with the instructions to ask the question, which part of “thou shall not” did you not understand? Was it the thou shall not have other gods before me ( think progressivism), or thou shall not steal ( redistribution of others wealth), or shou shall not covet thy neighbors ( think GM, housing, student loans etc).

@Jarhead: In Calgary yesterday, the news reported that Canada is going to subsidize all newspapers that charge for subscriptions because the newspapers are no longer viable. Just one step closer to the government controlling the propaganda or news.

@John Galt: Twenty years ago, we would have said there was no way the government would own or subsidize private industry and give preferential treatment to unions, but here we are about to jump through the Obama Portal. Canada is saying that all Canadian communities deserve a local voice and therefore the government must step up to the plate and insure their viability. Thus another Leftist institution is guaranteed survival in a supposed free market. Watch for the same approach in the US, as if the government is really worried about a paper in Wichita. Got to catch a plane. Their real concern is NYT and others!
