Obama pleads for $50 billion in state, local aid

This is it.

This is the new economy.

President Obama urged reluctant lawmakers Saturday to quickly approve nearly $50 billion in emergency aid to state and local governments, saying the money is needed to avoid “massive layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters” and to support the still-fragile economic recovery.

Last year’s stimulus was going to create 3-4 million new jobs and keep unemployment under 8%. Now we have another emergency:

In a letter to congressional leaders, Obama defended last year’s huge economic stimulus package, saying it helped break the economy’s free fall, but argued that more spending is urgent and unavoidable. “We must take these emergency measures,” he wrote in an appeal aimed primarily at members of his own party.

Of course it’s an emergency. Obama’s voting block needs a new monetary infusion.

There’s more money for not working. More money for bailing out unions.

The AFL-CIO is pressing the Senate to add an extension of unemployment and healthcare benefits to a new jobs bill.

The nation’s largest labor coalition also wants the Senate to add relief for state and local pension funds before the bill receives a vote later this week.

Bailing out union pensions is going to create jobs.

In arguing for the bill, Samuel cites an estimate by the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal think tank, that the bill would create 1 million jobs.

Sure it will.

As usual, there is no bailout for those of us who actually work for a living.

The new economy is print money and bail out your pals.

There are a couple of ways to stimulate an economy. One is to incentivize and another is spend yourself to death and tax the hell out of the population- now and in the future.

The US government collected 2.4 trillion in taxes in fiscal 2007, with about $250 billion coming from personal returns. Barack Obama and the Democrats blew $800 billion on a stimulus last year and it was a failure– even last year. As the mid-term election approaches, more and more Democrats voice their criticisms.

Obama and the Taxcorats could have given the taxpayers of this country a break. They could have suspended the payment of income taxes for two years at a much lesser cost than that of the stimulus. Such a move would have had an enormous effect on the economy. People would have been freed to save and spend and use their money the way they chose instead of having the Marxists in the Apollo Alliance squander it for them .

The Obama charade continues now in the form of “green jobs.” Currently this effort is being shepherded by Joe Lieberman and John Kerry, the Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb of Crap and Trade in the Senate.

The same geniuses who swore that the stimulus would have an immediate effect in creating new jobs (4.1 million of them!) now swear that this magical legislation is going to create “millions of new jobs.”

Green jobs.

Funny thing about those green jobs, though.

They don’t exist.

Not that that has stopped Congress from funding them:

On Capitol Hill, a staffer for Sen. Charles Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, was poring through the Federal Register and spotted the note. Then he went to the Department of Labor Web site, where he found a number of announcements like these:

** U.S. Department of Labor Announces $150 Million in “Pathways Out of Poverty” Training Grants for Green Jobs

** U.S. Department of Labor Announces Nearly $190 Million in State Energy Sector Partnership and Training Grants for Green Jobs

The great news is that the Kerry-Lieberman model assures us that it won’t cost us but $1 dollar a day!

“There’ll be some people who will want to demagogue that politically, but that’s less than $1 a day,” Lieberman told reporters. “Is the American household willing to pay less than $1 so we don’t have to buy oil from foreign countries, so we can create millions of new jobs, so we can clean up our environment? I think the answer is going to be yes.”

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb tell us that they have targets for greenhouse gas emissions, now complete with offsets!

Overall, EPA predicted industries would pay between $12 and $41 in 2013 for an allowance that’s necessary for compliance with the Kerry-Lieberman bill’s greenhouse gas limits, rising to between $13 and $59 in 2020. The wide range is because of different modeling assumptions, including a company’s access to special offset projects such as helping to keep a forest standing in a developing country.

Democrats labor under the belief that offsets do something to reduce emissions (see Al Gore’s jet).

Then again, they also think that there really is something called a “green job.”

They don’t, and there isn’t.

As Byron York notes:

Last year, Republicans complained that the Obama administration planned to spend billions on an ill-defined concept of green jobs. Now, billions have been spent, and many more will be spent, and the administration still can’t tell you what a green job is. Just look at the Federal Register.

The new economy.

We are so screwed.
