So what the heck is up with the Miss USA pageant? [Reader Post]

Beauty pageants are what they are like them or not. When I grew up the Miss America pageant was everything. Perhaps the most awkward moment of the evening came when the host would ask what the candidate would wish for if she had a wish. The usual answer was world peace or saving the children or something. These are beauty pageants and not collegiate competitions and everyone understands that. But more recently there has been an insidious injection of political correctness into beauty pageants and the Miss USA pageant specifically.

During last year’s Miss USA competition Perez Hilton put a burning ember in the hands of Carrie Prejean:

“Vermont recently became the 4th state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit. Why or why not?”

It was an utterly ridiculous question for a beauty pageant – a hot button question for which there was no winning. There was no way out. Someone was going to end up offended no matter what Prejean said. Hilton is gay and this was an issue of personal importance. That’s fine, but it had no place in the pageant and it was irresponsible of Hilton to put a firey question to one competitor and not all the others. Prejean tried to evade the question and while her answer wasn’t worthy of Faulkner one wonders what one is supposed to say in spontaneity when hit between the eyes like that. Soon after, Perez put out a youtube video in which he calls Prejean “a dumb b*tch.”

Most of us were probably thinking this was a freak incident and that having seen it once and the rancor it caused that we would not see a repeat performance.

Wrong.

During this year’s Miss USA pageant Miss Oklahoma Elizabeth Woolard led the competition following the swimsuit and evening gown competitions. Once again the final question led to a firestorm. Oscar Nunez, who plays a TV role in The Office, asked another question from Mars.

“Arizona’s new immigration statute authorizes law enforcement authorities to check the citizenship of anyone they believe to be in the country illegally. Critics say this may amount to racial profiling. Do you think that this should be mandated by the state or by the federal government?”

Woolard struggled with an answer but once again it was probably the last thing in the world she expected. Prejean may not have lost the competition in 2009 as she trailed the eventual winner going into the last interview, but Woolard was ahead. Curiosity abounds as to whether this cost Woolard the title.

I may be way off here, but something’s screwed up with this pageant. Last year a gay man used the pageant to ask a question about gay marriage and this year a Latino asks a question about Arizona’s immigration law. As earlier noted, the winner of this year’s Miss USA contest is a Muslim, but no one asked her if she believed that Islamic radicalism was a cause of terrorism. If tough questions are going to be asked, then all competitors should face the same rigor. Better yet, these kinds of topics ought to be off-limits. All they do is polarize.

This year’s winner did have an interesting answer to a question.

“I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said.

And she did win a pole dancing contest at a strip club in 2007.

So maybe it’s not all bad.

And as for Nunez, he misrepresented SB 1070 entirely. Law enforcement officials cannot stop anyone for simply thinking someone might be an illegal. Obviously Nunez has not read the law, but he is in good company. Barack Obama, Eric Holder and Janet Napolitano also oppose the law even though none of them has read it either. If the President of United States has no use for facts, of what use are they to an actor?

These pageants have become a joke as far as I am concerned. Over the last five years, the girls have all been the same. Heavily made up, fake body parts, tanned, same hairstyle. I feel like I am looking at a procession of barbie dolls where the only differences are the costumes, the hair color, the skin color, and the eye colors. I have stopped watching it. Same with Miss Universe.

So not having watched the show I can’t say that I have missed all that much. But I do agree with you. To single out someone and only ask that person the loaded the question and not the others is simply not fair.

Since Donald Trump is behind this politicized farce, the viewers should avoid the pagent and tell The Donald that he is fired.

Whats more interesting is that these questions were both given to Women who were in the running to Win the contest… and then they did not win…

What a Co-inky-dink….

I’m with you Tammy – these so-called beauty pagents are no different than the victoria secrets bra show, the lingerie football bowl, – just an excuse for bimbos to dress in as little as possible with parts hanging out all over & then try to say something intelligent – why are feminists speaking out about this? Then women wonder why men treat them like whores? Dress like one, act like one, etc – like the saying walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like duck – probably is a duck

I’m not a prude but jeez – there is nothing left to the imagination – guess I’m just getting too old for this – I remember back when trying to get respect for having some intelligence was our goal not being a sex object…………………..

Is this about political correctness, too?

‘Everybody Draw Mohammed’ Day Unleashes Facebook Fracas

[Apparently some in the Islamic world don’t grasp the American idea of freedom of religion nor freedom of the press. Go figure.] Barry Soetoro doesn’t like our U.S. Constitution. But Barry (Obama) is a rebel without a cause nowadays.

GO VIRAL!

we have a kenyan, muslim for president, now we have a muslim miss usa. the enemy must be laughing all the way to the usa bomb that will blow us all up.

These questions are designed to weed out intelligent contestants who actually know how to engage those brain cells and think for themselves. In an interview on Fox Woolard said she was prepared for the question and had read Arizona’s law. Now we can’t have a Miss USA like THAT, can we? She might ruffle some feathers. Never mind the fact that she might also educate some of the airheads out there.

The problem is the liberal Judges who have decided to bring in their own political bias and make it a consideration on who should win a beauty contest. Everywhere you look anymore liberals try to punish or make anyone who doesn’t fit their mold as persona non gratis. Perhaps conservative capitalists should teach liberals a lesson and start making a support of liberal politics as a disqualifying reason for employment or advancement. Since they insist on using it as a criteria themselves, they seem to think it’s appropriate, so who are we to argue.

“Your resume looks impressive, but tell me: Are you registered Democrat? And did you vote for Obama?”

“Uh, yes…”

“Thank you for your time, but I just don’t think you’ll fit in here.” (Hits intercom switch) “Please send in the next applicant.”
