Was it to shield Obama or because they preferred to use the incident to bash the military? Or both?

Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter made no secret of his radical Islamic views. He passed out business cards with the acronomyn SOA indicating he was a “soldier of Allah.” Hasan gave a bizzare PowerPoint presentation in which he quoted the Koran (slide 43): “I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Mohammed is the Messenger.”

In secret, Hasan was in contact with Al Queda and and a string of radical Islamists.

As Hasan began to fire on the unarmed soldiers at Fort Hood he shouted the Jihadi war cry: “Allahu Akbar.”

So why has it been so difficult for the “news” media to call this a terrorist act?

PC News: Networks Downplay Terrorism, Muslim Connection in Ft. Hood Attack
All three networks mention ‘terror’ only after Obama hints at ideology during funeral ceremony.

  • Networks Decide Attack Wasn’t Terror: 85 percent of the broadcast stories didn’t mention the word “terror.” ABC, CBS, and NBC evening news referenced terrorism connections to the Fort Hood attack just seven times in 48 reports.
  • ABC, CBS, NBC Follow White House Line: Before Obama’s Nov. 10 speech, 93 percent of the stories had ignored any terror connection. But after Obama hinted at what ABC called “Islamic extremist views,” all three networks mentioned terrorism.
  • Alleged Attacker’s Muslim Faith Not Important Either: Slightly more than one-fourth (29 percent) of evening news reports mentioned that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was a Muslim. Of those, half (7 out of 14) defended the religion or included experts to do so.

Two possible explanations:

First, the recognition of this atrocity as a terrorist attack means that Obama has to take personal responsibility for the failings of his Administration to “connect the dots” to prevent this attack. The same folks who insisted Bush should have done something prior to the September 11th attacks will have a hard time defending the Obama Administration when it’s clear there were red lights flashing indicating that Hasan was a problem. It happened on Obama’s watch. If they can say it’s not a terrorist attack they can escape responsibility for failing to prevent it.

There is also a political dimension to the denial. Evan Thomas, the Editor of Newsweek gave away the game as he reacted to the news that Hasan was a Muslim:

“I cringe that he’s a Muslim. I mean, because it just inflames all the fears. I think he’s probably just a nut case but, with that label attached to him, it will get the right wing going.”

So, already the attack has become politicized by the left. But they didn’t stop there.

Second, there seemed to be an instant reaction to the attack to blame the military. All those wars and deployments were bound to make a soldier snap. But of course that explanation is hard to support given that Hasan had never been deployed overseas. The best the left can do is to blame Bush for a war which they claim radicalizes Muslims (despite the fact that Muslims were radicalized long before Bush came to office).

Now that the Muslim and terrorist connection is established beyond a shadow of a doubt the “news” media goes to it’s last resort: there are “Christian nuts” too. Maybe so, but last time I checked they haven’t flown planes into buildings, beheaded Muslims with dull knives or shot up an Army base. And there certainly has been no “Muslim backlash” despite the number of worried columns with that theme have appeared in the New York Times.

Political Correctness Shielding the Next Terrorist?

With the left and their media acolytes so willing to support the politically correct culture of denial that led to the Hasan atrocity one wonders how many other shooters or bombers or whatever are hiding in plain sight? And wouldn’t it be nice that those on the left who would accuse us of wanting to put all Muslims in internment camps cared a bit more for the safety of the citizens who might be the next target?

I touched on this two days ago in another thread, Mike. Tho I would less quick to blame the media since they took the lead from the military and the FBI on this. The FBI who, almost immediately, pronounced it *not* a terrorist attack.

Don’t think the media are shielding the Hasan terrorist. I do, however, they are shielding the Eunuch in Chief.

This is a complete and total white washing to protect from the White House
on down. Our intelligence agencies and the military dropped the ball with
Hasan. There is great fear within the Islamic community and organizations
of a backlash against Muslims and Islam. Muslim apologists were quick to
the attack that this was not in any way related ot Islam or terrorism. I
disagree, and violently! Once again I raise the question of when was
the last time a Jew or Christian committed such an act or flew airliners
into buildings, strapped bombs onto their bodies to kill as many people
as possible, who plant bombs, IED’s, stuf bombs up their butts, and I
can go on and on. This is a PROBLEM that is rooted in Islam, the Koran
and Hadiths. How many other Hasan’s are out there inside our military,
intelligence and law enforcement agencies? We do not know, and that
is a grave problem. Study Islam and the Koran and it is not to hard
to connect the dots. I fear this is not the last of this type of attack
that we have seen. I pray that I am wrong.

Obama & his minions did not use the word “terrorist” in connections with Hasan’s military Muslim murders because that would spotlight the incompetence of Obama in his staff selection and the incompetent policies they produce! It was Obama who picked bozo Janet Napolitano as Head of Homeland security. It was in April 2009 that Napolitano’s staff launched their security assessment that highlighted a big threat to homeland security would come from USA military “right wingers”. Several months of work by the best minds from Napolitano’s buddies produced this gem! So
OBAMA/NAPOLITANO/DHS STAFF gets this one threat assessment only half right with the words USA military but are totally wrong on which end of the political spectrum would produce the murders!!!
Obama in Egypt told the world about his love & respect for things Muslim; and so he also sends a message to the USA citizens to bend over backward to be nice to Muslims or else.

From Napolitano in april 2009
During a series of interviews on network news programs, she(Napolitano) was asked about the report’s assertion that some U.S. military veterans could be seen as potential converts to right-wing extremism during a down economy.
In her statement Wednesday, Ms. Napolitano defended the report, which says “rightwing extremism” may include groups opposed to abortion and immigration…
But the top House Democrat with oversight of the Department of Homeland Security said in a letter to Ms. Napolitano that he was “dumbfounded” that such a report would be issued.

“This report appears to raise significant issues involving the privacy and civil liberties of many Americans – including war veterans,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee

It’s both. They are protecting obama AND diversity/muslims. I should also mention they are also defending the denial of reality they live in. This would mean there is a terrorist threat they have to deal with and they don’t want to.

The media paved the way for Obama’s election victory, which the inexperienced candidate could have never won on his own. So of course they are covering for Obama.

Yet the stakes are much higher than that. It challenges everything that liberals believe to reveal the problem of radical Islamism, instead of blaming America. Reality is a huge threat to the media, Academia and Hollywood.

This is a classic page out of the Clinton playbook, gloss over and don’t admit something is a terrorist act and the press will go along with you. How many attacks did the US have to with stand while the Clinton WH did nothing but try and evade the issue. Hell Clinton let Kosovo and the break out Russian states burn while standing by and doing nothing while genocide happened.

@Mike’s America: No problem, Mike’sA. Glad you posted on this head scratching “huh”? Been wanting to do a post on it myself, but have my time tied up between work and cyber fencing with Larry on the health care bit.

Very glad you’re atop of it, and that you put it forth for others to also ponder. It’s been bothering me since Day One of the terrorist … no, make that “not a terrorist”… attack.

I don’t understand how you can say “the Muslim and terrorist connection is established beyond a shadow of a doubt” when the only two sources for that conclusion leave the question of a connection unclear; one of your sources even says, “evidence to this point shows that Hasan acted alone.” Your making a bold statement with hardly anything to back it up.

Hasan probably acted independently, but probably structured this attack to be independently coordinated with foreign terrorists (with whom he had no solid ties, although he desired closer ties). However, it is certain that this was a calculated act of terror made to influence the policy of our country. It is a textbook example of terrorism.

“Terrorism (ter-uh-riz-uhm):

the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.”

The fact that Hasan was in contact and/or attempting to establish contact with Islamic terrorists shows were his sympathy lies. We were actually lucky that Al Qaeda appears to not have taken Hasan seriously.

However successful his attempts to link up with foreign terrorists may have been, the shouting of “Allah Akbar” at the beginning of this terrorist attack makes his intention clear.

Islam is not necessarily bad because terrorists use the religion to justify their acts of violence (which are committed in its name). However, when there are cover-up attempts like this, it makes me wonder why some people want to hide these things.

A politically correct environment allowed Hasan to stay in the military and kill his fellow troops. Hasan should have been dismissed or at least counseled before this attack.

Obama said that Hasan may have cracked under pressure. The truth is that our country has cracked under pressure from Islamist thugs. Stockholm syndrome is the rule of the land.

@Ringo:

I don’t understand how you can say “the Muslim and terrorist connection is established beyond a shadow of a doubt” when the only two sources for that conclusion leave the question of a connection unclear;

Hasan’s past statements to his fellow soldiers, his presentation regarding Islam, and his efforts to get into contact with Al Qaeda in addition to having “Soldier of Allah” on his business cards are all very strong indicators.

Shouting “Allah Akbar” while firing on the victims delivers an unquestionable verdict.

one of your sources even says, “evidence to this point shows that Hasan acted alone.”

So, in your mind, in order to be terrorism Hasan had to have acted in concert with others? By what definition of “terrorism” do you reach that conclusion?

Your making a bold statement with hardly anything to back it up.

That’s funny.

Keeping your head firmly buried in the sand won’t change the facts.
