Obama’s request for emails opposing his policies amounts to domestic spying!

I can only imagine the level of justifiable outrage had your predecessor asked Americans to forward emails critical of his policies to the White House. I suspect that you would have been leading the charge in condemning such a program-and I would have been at your side denouncing such heavy-handed government action.
– Letter by Senator John Cornyn to President Obama.

Full text of Cornyn’s letter:

Dear President Obama,

I write to express my concern about a new White House program to monitor American citizens’ speech opposing your health care policies, and to seek your assurances that this program is being carried out in a manner consistent with the First Amendment and America’s tradition of free speech and public discourse.

Yesterday, in an official White House release entitled “Facts are Stubborn Things,” the White House Director of New Media, Macon Phillips, asserted that there was “a lot of disinformation out there,” and encouraged citizens to report “fishy” speech opposing your health care policies to the White House. Phillips specifically targeted private, unpublished, even casual speech, writing that “rumors often travel just below the surface via chain emails or through casual conversation.” Phillips wrote “If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov…

I am not aware of any precedent for a President asking American citizens to report their fellow citizens to the White House for pure political speech that is deemed “fishy” or otherwise inimical to the White House’s political interests.

By requesting that citizens send “fishy” emails to the White House, it is inevitable that the names, email addresses, IP addresses, and private speech of U.S. citizens will be reported to the White House. You should not be surprised that these actions taken by your White House staff raise the specter of a data collection program. As Congress debates health care reform and other critical policy matters, citizen engagement must not be chilled by fear of government monitoring the exercise of free speech rights.

I can only imagine the level of justifiable outrage had your predecessor asked Americans to forward emails critical of his policies to the White House. I suspect that you would have been leading the charge in condemning such a program-and I would have been at your side denouncing such heavy-handed government action.

So I urge you to cease this program immediately. At the very least, I request that you detail to Congress and the public the protocols that your White House is following to purge the names, email addresses, IP addresses, and identities of citizens who are reported to have engaged in “fishy” speech. And I respectfully request an answer to the following:

  • How do you intend to use the names, email addresses, IP addresses, and identities of citizens who are reported to have engaged in “fishy” speech?
How do you intend to notify citizens who have been reported for “fishy” speech?
  • What action do you intend to take against citizens who have been reported for engaging in “fishy” speech?
  • Do your own past statements qualify as “disinformation”? For example, is it “disinformation” to note that in 2003 you said:”I happen to be a proponent of a single-payer universal health care plan”?

I look forward to your prompt response.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN

United States Senator

It’s time to dust off some lines from the 60’s. “The whole world is watching!” Thank you Senator Cornyn.

if all of these new actions by obama aren’t great indicators for the average american tht obama is creating a new level of fear of government then some people really need to be smacked. the more that is happening now the more i am getting really freaked out. i am pretty vocal in my beliefs and opinions and i am pretty certain that i will end up being reported. cool huh, what about the first amendment?

It is like I said on one of the articles out there where some liberals were saying that their “freedom of speech is being squashed by those who would want to squash the reporting”

If this were Bush doing it, there would be hell to pay and outrage all over the place. And honestly, I wouldn’t blame them.

BUT, now it is their lord and savior – obama and it is very OK to suddenly act like Big Brother. Suddenly it is OK to turn in people for speaking out against their Fuhrer and perform their Nazi like actions.

In all the political diatribes I have been a part of, NEVER ONCE did I *think* nor *utter* “OMG!!!, I’m am so telling the secret service on you! Bush will have you in jail!”

The HUGE double standard that the VAST majority SEEM to have is my biggest issue with them. One big bundle of hypocrisy!

Obama did not pull the troops out immediately and some yelled of course and he waves his hands and speaks a few words “These aren’t the soldiers you’re looking for…” and “Hey! That’s OK. We only cared when it was Bush.”

What next? Interment camps for those who dare speak out against obama?
It just scare me because I can close my eyes and see the dimwits holding up their arms and saying “Zeig Heil obama!” repeatedly and never once blinking an eye as they do it.

Maybe this post is over the top but … is it really?
The left kept calling Bush Hitler but with each passing day, it looks like obama is following in Hitlers footsteps.

luva the scissors:”i am pretty vocal in my beliefs and opinions and i am pretty certain that i will end up being reported. ”

At this rate, I expect to be found in a car with 2 in my head under mysterious circumstances. Just like the guy involved in the “passport fraud.”

ditto, You got it nailed as usual. John Cornyn finds his courage occasionally and when he does it is all good. Kay B. Hutchison needs to go home and LISTEN to her constituency.

McCain occasionally finds his balls if he can remember to use both hands.

Rick Perry, the Texas Governor read the Constitution and the 10th Amendment applies like lightning follows thunder.

Perry/Palin 2012 because America deserves better.

Riding to the house now. Laptop batteries are fading and campfire coffee, chili and stew are grand but being a land owning Kulak and a rancher makes me a target for Obama’s next Tax Increase.
I employ folks with skills, I am a minority and my hands are too except for a guy from Maine that was a former SF Medic and has a prosthetic leg but can ride a horse and asked me for a job. I know him from Iraq and took him on because he made a difference and the VA offered him next to nothing but years of waiting. Cow Driving takes skills and folks get hurt. Jim Downey fixes hurts with skill.

I need a shower and some sleep. Headed for the house.

A Cattle Czar? Nope. If one is appointed I will kick his Chicago Punk ass.

Per Ace, Obama’s answer to Cornyn’s letter is to call out the union thugs to break up these protests. John Sweeney. AFL/CIO has worked up ascheme to do this.

I read in comments somwhere that this guy’s 86 year old father is afraid he will die in a communist country. So am I.

I wrote KBH about the 0bamaCare crap and how I hoped she would stop the ridiculous trampling of our health care system and she sent me back talking points about the 40 Million people that were without coverage and blah blah blah. EXTREMELY disappointing to say the least. I will not be voting for her for Governor and have already put Perry in the ‘only vote I regret’ category, so I’m not sure what to do now…….
