I see a lot of visits to Canada in my future if this happens, and a van outfitted with compartments to smuggle in contraband cola. Curious, if I buy a pack of KoolAid, make it w sugar, add in club soda…do my kids have to charge tax at their lemonade stand? Is this in response to stopping the Palin kids from their lemonade stand?

Senate leaders are considering new federal taxes on soda and other sugary drinks to help pay for an overhaul of the nation’s health-care system.

The taxes would pay for only a fraction of the cost to expand health-insurance coverage to all Americans and would face strong opposition from the beverage industry. They also could spark a backlash from consumers who would have to pay several cents more for a soft drink.

On Tuesday, the Senate Finance Committee is set to hear proposals from about a dozen experts about how to pay for the comprehensive health-care overhaul that President Barack Obama wants to enact this year. Early estimates put the cost of the plan at around $1.2 trillion. The administration has so far only earmarked funds for about half of that amount.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a Washington-based watchdog group that pressures food companies to make healthier products, plans to propose a federal excise tax on soda, certain fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and ready-to-drink teas. It would not include most diet beverages. Excise taxes are levied on goods and manufacturers typically pass them on to consumers.

No Coke! Pepsi! Oh wait…no, nothin’.

Oh…I forgot, “95% of all Americans will have their taxes CUT (as long as they don’t drink Coke or Pepsi products).”

New Obama-bot talking point that showed up yesterday ..

Ignore the fact (or any other facts) that Obama supported a “single payer” plan (but said there wasn’t support for it yet) back in 2003 and 2008, rather what is important is the plan he is putting forth now.

That seems like a tall order .. it’s sort of like saying you should ignore any Japanese ships heading toward Pearl Harbor in early Dec 1941.

do you realize how much soda is consumed in this country? i know in my house alone we go through plenty, between the 2 i drink a day and the 3 my husband takes to work that is almost a 6 pack a day. i know one family that never drinks anything but soda and milk, no water or juice or anything else and they buy the store brands because they go through so much. as some one else said, i thought our taxes weren’t going to go up. so far my smokes have gone up and they are talking about raising liquor in my state and now this, where does it end. government cannot be all things to all people.

I drink Diet Coke without any sugar. But something tells me that will be taxed too.

This idea that Dems want to tax beverages which add to obesity is bull crap. They just want to find a new tax.

And once again, what about Obama’s promise not to raise ANY taxes on people making less than $250,000? Or does no one pay any attention to that since the election and since Obama already signed the bill raising cigarette taxes; which mostly impact the poor who smoke more?

The Senate leaders are evil geniuses! It is another way to eliminate that dastardly greenhouse gas – CARBON DIOXIDE, ha ha! I can hear them in chambers chatting, “We’ll tax CO2 to make it go away, and then we will put a 90% tax on all the industrial gas companies that collect and sell the CO2! Bwahahahaha”.

Instead of taxing us, they should be giving US the bailout money. Why in the world would you inject billions and billions of dollars into a company that is failing? What are we doing? Does anyone know? Or are we just throwing money around, trying to make something, anything happen? Help us…

Ares, are you INSANE!?! If they gave us the money instead of their campaign contributors….then how would Democrats get re-elected?

Dem logic:

American workers don’t need money as much as banks need money
Unions that pay 50-80% of every single Democrat’s campaign need more representation
Making the costs of products higher will help businesses
Since America’s at war, we should cut defense spending
Raising the price on something doesn’t effect how many people buy it

“This idea that Dems want to tax beverages which add to obesity is bull crap. They just want to find a new tax.”

@Mike’s America:

Since when do sports drinks add to obesity, when probably 95% of the people who drink them are actually in great shape and drink them in conjunction with their active, mostly sports- or exercise-related lifestyles?

You’re right. It is utter BS. But, considering 62+ million people believed all the BS coming from the Democrats since 2006, I have no doubt tens of millions of Americans will give Obama and the Democrats a pass on this too. 8 years of this crap…

Democrats ran the price of gas up by threatening to overtax the producers. Gas went up, people quit buying American Automobiles. Hundreds of thousands out of work, never to return.

Cap and Trade will destroy the energy industry. Hundreds of thousands will be out of work, never to return.

O’Dumbo has a plan in his empty head to reform the best medical system in the world to make it like the worst systems. Does anyone really think people will spend years in medical school to work for the government at a GS rating. Hundreds of thousand will be out of work and out of life saving care.

Todays democrats led by O’Dumbo are the most dangerous sub-human thing to face America in history. I still hope for a massive terrorist attack on D.C. while everyone is in town. It’s America’s only hope for survival as a free country.

I drink Diet Coke as well – too much of it. They put too much sugar in standard soda drinks – although that’s up to us to decide whether we want it or not. However doesn’t Diet Coke has Aspartame which is controversial.

If they put up taxes slightly up on certain foods then it should be to lower the costs of other foods if they want to influence healthy eating. However this isn’t the case – it looks like an old fashioned stealth tax.

To think this started with alcohol revenue taxes, Prohibition, then a continual series of cigarette taxes. These people will tax everything they think a vice or unhealthy for you, or try to control anything else that they don’t like. They are fascist fanatics that want to force everyone to follow their particular dogmas. It doesn’t take religion or god to be a fanatic, It all comes down to forcing of their belief system on others.

At this rate, the black market won’t be looked upon with distain but with admiration. Part of “civil disobediance”.

Cigs, booze, pop, back room health clinics, etc…..it will become a sport, hobby and profession.

Didn’t they do this in the Colonial days?

Then they will deny hip transplants to those who are overweight because according to the government, that is why they need a hip transplant.
They will also let the elderly suffer and die as they don’t warrant the cost and use of resources.

What do guys think about food regulation? How far should it be a free market? Presumably you are for safety standards. Do you think there should regulation on amounts of sugar, fats placed into food etc? Also how about labeling? Should the government enforce food companies to clear label not just their ingredients but also the calories, sugar etc.

There’s plenty of talk about obesity epidemic which sounds a little hysterical but no doubt people are getting fatter.
