BAGHDAD (AP) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton assured Iraqis on Saturday that the Obama administration would not abandon their country even as it presses ahead with plans to withdraw American troops amid a recent surge in violence.

“Let me assure you and repeat what President Obama said, we are committed to Iraq, we want to see a stable, sovereign, self-reliant Iraq,” she told a nervous but receptive crowd at a town hall meeting at the U.S. Embassy in the capital.“We are very committed, but the nature of our commitment may look somewhat different because we are going to be withdrawing our combat troops over the next couple of years,” Clinton said.

“There is nothing more important than to have a united Iraq,” Clinton replied. “The more united Iraq is, the more you will trust your security services. The security services have to earn your trust but the people have to demand it.”
“We will be working closely with the Iraqi government and the Iraqi security forces as we withdraw our combat troops, but we need to be sure that all of you are supporting a strong, nonsectarian security force and we will work to try and help make that happen,” she said.

Really, this would be like Dick Cheney going on Meet the Press and demanding an immediate, unconditional “redeployment” out of Iraq.

If we withdraw our combat troops, which troops will be necessary for combating resurgents? I know, it’s a stupid question to us Americans, but don’t you think that very question (or its Iraqi equivalent) was on the mind of every Iraqi?
I wouldn’t be surprised to see amabO* rename “combat troops” to “counter re-insurgence troops” just to be able to say he got the combat troops out in a timeframe as close to his original as possible.

Jeff, he already has. He’s going to remove tens of thousands of “combat troops”, and the remainder will be:
training
logistics
counter terrorism (they’ll be pleased to hear they’re not doing combat I’m sure)
and [drum roll….]

This doesn’t matter though because since May 2003 when the UN MANDATED the occupation and reconstruction of Iraq, people have opposed the war (like President Obama did), and now that there’s a different person in the Oval Office…no one cares; ie, their opposition was really just anti-Bush not really anti-war
