As OPEC Prepares to Meet, Chu Focuses on U.S. Energy

WASHINGTON — Energy Secretary Steven Chu — whose agency has long taken the lead on global oil-market policy — said Thursday he doesn’t know what the Obama administration would urge the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to do at its meeting next month.

“I’m not the administration,” Mr. Chu said during a meeting with reporters Thursday. OPEC members are scheduled to meet March 15 to discuss the possibility of production cuts to respond to slumping prices. “I will be speaking and learning more about this in order to figure out what the U.S. position should be and what the president’s position is,” Mr. Chu said.

On Wednesday, when approached by reporters after a speech to a group of utility regulators, Mr. Chu declined to offer an opinion on whether OPEC should cut production, saying the issue was “not in my domain.” He later told reporters on a conference call that his response to the question reflected “more of my naiveté than anything else.”

Mr. Chu said Thursday he feels “like I’ve been dumped into the deep end of the pool” in confronting questions about oil policy, such as whether the administration would consider delaying scheduled deliveries of oil this spring to the nation’s strategic petroleum reserves.

Mr. Chu is still without a deputy, and the administration has yet to nominate people to fill other high-level Energy Department posts, reflecting a broader challenge the administration faces staffing up cabinet departments to handle an array of initiatives called for by President Barack Obama.

Have you ever heard anything so absurd? This is the cabinet officer charged with implementing Obama’s energy policy and the man is totally clueless as to what that policy is.

Besides, claiming that it’s not in his domain to have an opinion on OPEC oil production is reminiscent of Obama suggesting an opinion on abortion was above his pay grade.

Why did the Senate confirm this clueless clown?

Obama’s Administration may just make Jimmy Carter’s seem competant by comparison!

I’m glad you posted this Mike. I was throwing together a post about the embarrassment that Chu is bringing to his job, but as usual, you are on top of it.

This isn’t getting a whole lot of press but it should. This guy is in charge of one of the most important departments in our modern government, and he thinks that OPEC is outside his domain. At least he is honest about his ability to do his job — “I’ve been dumped into the deep end of the pool”.

As a cabinet level secretary, he IS the administration, and has no idea of what his job is let alone how to do it. OPEC is going to run roughshod over him and we are going to see oil prices go through the roof again.

It’s possible he’s waffling because low oil prices and low carbon emissions are incompatible goals, and he hasn’t gotten directives from Obama yet on which goal he’s supposed to be promoting.
That said, I don’t know how much influence we have on OPEC anyway. I’d be much more concerned about domestic energy policy and his views on that than any opinions he might have on jawboning OPEC.

But at least he paid his taxes!

A rarity these days, to be sure.

Obama’s Administration may just make Jimmy Carter’s seem competant by comparison!

Now, there’s a scary thought.

Let us not forget that Obama and many in the far left do not want low gas prices. They want them high to discourage people from driving.

It would be wise to remember what Acting President Obama said about $4 a gallon gasoline, it’s not that the price is high, it’s just that it went up too fast.

Gas and energy rationing is in your future. What do you think the CO2 regulation hoax is all about?

@ditto: That’s a good point ditto. They don’t have a policy to encourage OPEC production because they don’t care how high the price of oil goes.

Screw the little guy and the poor who have to put gas in their car to look for work!

Chu is a good, dependable leftist and Hussein a$$ kisser. Those are the only qualifications necessary for a cabinet position today.

Just think how helpful it would be if California uncapped some of the wells along their coastline instead of begging the rest of the states to bail them out.

Nope, the greenies want the fuel prices to go higher causing hardship on the consumer’s of oil which forces them to adhere to their policies.

Fuel in most countries is significantly more expensive than america. Much of the rise in 07-08 was due to the weak US dollar where imports are more expensive but exports cheaper. In a trading country -swings & roundabouts.

1973 saw the politics of oil transfer from Texas to the ME & thus OPEC.US…A has influence over OPEC as a major consumer.

Iol is a scarce resource & will rise in price again sometime unless it is rationed out for 30 years.

But you are right about the unpreparedness of the Energy Dept under its new masters. Not good.
