As the President-elect’s administration weighs what to do with the detainees remaining at Guantánamo, the pressure is mounting from advocacy groups. For years, some organizations have taken an extreme approach, telling the detainees’ stories in the most favorable manner possible — ignoring evidence of their ties to terrorism, while magnifying nearly every allegation of abuse whether it is valid or not. The result is a picture of Guantánamo that is clearly distorted. Most inmates are portrayed as obvious innocents who are tortured by an American government run amok.
This is SO true. It’s all about anti-Bush politics and trying to present the idea that the US Govt is run amok by GWB. The thing is…the detainees are Obama’s problem now. He may WANT to close Gitmo (as did Pres Bush who stated so repeatedly), but it’s not that simple.
No one wants the bad guys from Gitmo. Not Australia, not Canada, not the UK, not Europe, not Kansas, not Illinois, no one. So where do you put em? Send em to Afghanistan or Pakistan or Yemen, and they’re either gonna be killed or let loose to kill Americans again. Send em to any state in the U.S., and they’re gonna be treated worse as well as risk putting that state and the other prisoners at risk.
Kill em? Nah, no one’s gonna do that.
Life in prison? Where? Gitmo? Isn’t that what’s going on now, and if it was wrong under GWB, then will it be ok under The Infallible One?
Sorry, that last question was stupid-I know. Of course it’ll be ok under Obama. No one really cares about these guys. They were just political tools to attack GWB. Now…they’re useless. Maybe that’s why the question of their fate is so much more dire now.
