MYTH: “The aftermath of Katrina will go down as one of the worst abandonments of Americans on American soil ever in U.S. history.” –Aaron Broussard, president, Jefferson Parish, La., Meet the Press, NBC, Sept. 4, 2005

REALITY: Bumbling by top disaster-management officials fueled a perception of general inaction, one that was compounded by impassioned news anchors. In fact, the response to Hurricane Katrina was by far the largest — and fastest — rescue effort in U.S. history, with nearly 100,000 emergency personnel arriving on the scene within three days of the storm’s landfall.

Dozens of National Guard and Coast Guard helicopters flew rescue operations that first day — some just 2 hours after Katrina hit the coast. Hoistless Army helicopters improvised rescues, carefully hovering on rooftops to pick up survivors. On the ground, “guardsmen had to chop their way through, moving trees and recreating roadways,” says Jack Harrison of the National Guard. By the end of the week, 50,000 National Guard troops in the Gulf Coast region had saved 17,000 people; 4000 Coast Guard personnel saved more than 33,000.

These units had help from local, state and national responders, including five helicopters from the Navy ship Bataan and choppers from the Air Force and police. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries dispatched 250 agents in boats. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), state police and sheriffs’ departments launched rescue flotillas. By Wednesday morning, volunteers and national teams joined the effort, including eight units from California’s Swift Water Rescue. By Sept. 8, the waterborne operation had rescued 20,000.

While the press focused on FEMA’s shortcomings, this broad array of local, state and national responders pulled off an extraordinary success — especially given the huge area devastated by the storm. Computer simulations of a Katrina-strength hurricane had estimated a worst-case-scenario death toll of more than 60,000 people in Louisiana. The actual number was 1077 in that state.

NEXT TIME: Any fatalities are too many. Improvements hinge on building more robust communications networks and stepping up predisaster planning to better coordinate local and national resources.

But despite these facts, we still have morons, 3 years later, saying “THOUSANDS!” were left to die by evil President Bush. Un-fuhkeen-real.

And the truth is we don’t know because Obama and his cronies have blocked access to his documents and all of his writings except for his two autobiographies that were clearly written by someone other than himself. Independent literature experts who have studied the writings of “Dreams Of My Father” state it bears and uncanny resemblance to the language Ayers used in his own writings. And everyone in his past life that he is asked about get’s thrown under the bus.

Those people were sent to that football stadium by Mayor Nagin knowing full well it was not stocked with water, food, and medical assistance. People had to break into vending machines to try to get food and drinks due to the mayor’s lack of judgement. Bush was all along advising Louisiana and Mississippi be evacuated before hurricane Katrina ever hit, as did FEMA. The Mayor did nothing but say, “No that’s okay we’ll ride it out, just like we have done before.” He did not arrange for bus transportation for the poor and the orderly evacuation of nursing homes. Buses were sent out from out of state to help. The Governor was up in Baton Rouge attending dinner parties. Meanwhile we all saw the videos of people in New Orleans looting neighbor’s houses and stores.

By the time the levees broke Mayor Nagin changed his tune and started demanding to know where the hell FEMA was after days of telling the FEMA director over the phone their services were not needed. That my friend IS the sad truth.

If you actually did the research, you would find that it has been the Republicans all along listening to Black Americans and aiding them in Civil Rights issues that your precious Democrats have staunchly opposed for the last 150 years.

The water had already leveled so F.E.M.A did’nt have to wait a fuckiing WEEK, to go out and save the people of New Orleans who were drowning and needed recue.

Also there was NO HELP, NONE WHAT’S SO EVER to the people that DID survive.

Thousands of New Orleans citizens had to live in a Foot Ball Stadium for weeks with NO FOOD, NO WATER, NOR HELP AT ALL by F.E.M.A.

It was the Red cross and other American citizens OUTSIDE of New orleans who volentered to help the citizens of New Orleans after Katrina.

NOT F.E.M.A!

NOR the leaders who were running our country.

And, what’s the problem with saying that African Americans were the Majority that died and were affected by, in New Orleans?

Maybe if the republicans would try to cater to the Low and Middle income families {which are mostly African Americans and other Minoritys} instead of catering to the BIG OIL companys and the Rich.

Perhaps you missed my other post. Due to Louisiana state sovereignty. FEMA could NOT go into the state without first receiving the permission of the state to do so. FEMA was in constant communication with Governor Blanco and New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin (Both Democrats) and Bush informed them that the information he was getting back from the Army Corps of Engineers was that the levees would not hold if the water reached certain levels. He highly suggested that New Orleans parishes be added to the disaster area so he could get FEMA in there. In typical partisan style they blew Bush and FEMA warnings off with disasterous results.

As to your death toll “of THOUSANDS by drowning”; Although most of the 1,464 deceased victims of Hurricane Katrina from Louisiana were “Storm Related”, they were not all drowned. Nor were blacks particularly targeted for extinction by the storm. Your attempt to twist this into a “Republican racism issue” is idiotic and shows you as a “race baiter” who would stoop to any level to keep blacks disinformed, outraged, and in support of Democratic Party mythologies. It is rather an insult to their intelligence by doing so and demands their attention. Hurricanes are equal opportunity killers:
